I don't think the RIAA is stupid enough to think there is a market for their "product" now. But they are attempting to create a market through legislation. And, who knows, if they can buy the US and make the US stronarm the rest of the world then this might actually work. A small step for their bottom line, and a huge leap backwards for mankind, artists and audience alike.
The "copyright industry" is quickly becoming obsolete, they are turning into useless middle men that doesn't provide any value to customers or artists. They can only continue existing in their current form through legislation. I have no problem with supporting the artists, but I'll be damned if I let the middle men get their hands on my money. I completely stopped buying retail CD's a year ago. Nowdays I only buy second hand or directly from the artists, and if I can't do that, then I'll rather pirate than support these dinosaurs. Obsolete bussines models are supposed to die. Darwin's laws should apply to businesses to, especially businesses. Lets all give them a little push on the way. I am doing my part, are you?
Maybe I was unclear, what I meant was that there is no way for a human beeing to grok complete 4D+ at once. You can break the model down to look at different 2D or 3D subsets, but you can't possibly see the whole picture.
As for the time dimension and 4D. You are right. I stand corrected.
Actually, that would be a great idea! Think the arcade game Tank War Europe in Neuromancer (William Gibson)... We'll need some holographic projectors though...
Online games will continue to be released in an incomplete state and their owners will fully expect the players to pay for finishing the game. That's the future of MMORPG's.
I don't want to be picky, but in what way does this differ from any other commercial game? Or any product at all. The fundamental truth of capitalism is: The consumer always pays! ...because real peoples real work is the only thing that adds value to the system. The rest is just distributing the riches.
My point is that this has always been true, and will probably continue to be true. You always pay! Deal with it!
Please explain 5 dimensions and we'll get into 11 dimensions later. I can't think... that.. way.. ouch..
The trick is to not try to imagin what it would look like. You just can't. Your brain is designed for a 3D world. If you know some algebra you can calculate multidimensional problems though. Math works just fine in n dimensions.
Even if you could see effects created by multidimensional objects, you would probably not understand what they mean. For example, imagine that you are a 2D person living on a 2-brane. A 3D person reaches his hand through your 2D world. What would you see? Five spheres (you're 2D remember!) would appear and grow into one larger.
It would look nothing at all like a hand, and if you used math to calculate the 3D shape of the hand you would still not be able to imagine it because your 2D brain couldn't do it. And that's just one extra dimension, now try 8.
I say it again, don't try to imagine it, use the math, Luke!

I hate to point this out, but just because LOTR is written in the english language that doesn't make it american litterature.
JR tolkien was born, lived and died as a british citizen, not an american.
However, I agree that it is a great book, I read it many times as a kid.
I still can't see why it was not an act of terrorism to drop nukes on civilians. And I don't think that the statement "they might not have survived anyway" is a good excuse.
I don't know if you have seen this movie, but i highly recommend it. You'll get a lot on the subject of "organic playstation", including viruses. ExistenZ
But of course!
All the infants in japanese hospitals were trining to kill Americans. The kids in the schoolyard was training to kill americans. Everyone was training to kill americans. Of course!
Why didn't I think of that.
If the japanese government said to the people: "Defend your self against invasion!" This makes every last citizen of japan a valid target.
You do realize that you just declared the nazi bombing of london legitimate, do you?
idiot!
Targetting civilians is terrorism, even if it is committed by the USA. And, by God nuking a city is targetting civilians. Judge yourselves by the same standards you judge others!
OK, so if this applies to meat, why doesn't it apply to everything? Why don't you tell them, "If you won't go to space without any reading material, you are not fit to be an astronaut"? After all, they don't really _need_ it. How about, "If you won't go to space without anything but flavorless (but nutritious) paste from a tube, you are not fit to be an astronaut"?
I understand your argument about the importance of morale. But if space travel is ever to be, there are more pressing needs than growing meat. It's simply a complicated (and expensive) problem. For example, the meat you grow will consume oxygen, while plants would provide it. Thus every piece of meat you bring will make it harder to have a self sustaining spacecraft, or increase the amount of oxygen you'll need in a non self sustaining craft. This will increase the inertia of the craft, meaning bigger engines, more fuel etc. And all for the taste of a BigMac?
In one sentence: Not Worth It!
I'll rather have us in space without meat than stuck on earth with it =)
As for reading material, it'll work just fine the way we do it at earth, so there is no need for expensive research, no problem, and not really a valid argument. They can just bring their bits along, or beam them up from earth. And "flavorless (but nutritious) paste from a tube" hardly describes all non meat protein sources. Anyway some tradeoffs has to be made, you won't fly to Mars in your livingroom (at least not anytime soon...)
Disclaimer: I have my own agenda in this, since I would _love_ to see a vegetarian mars mission. But producing meat inflight is really not a good idea. However, cruelty free meat here on earth would be something else entirely.
Besides, Mandrake needs the cash a release will generate.
Hope it works, because Mandrake is our last, best hope to break the MS stranglehold on the desktop... So easy to use that it almost doesn't feel like linux =) I preordered the 8.2 PowerPack to give them some $, but I cant wait for 9.0. Judging from what we have seen so far it should be awesome!
You statement is true, of course.
But I was raised on a meat-centric diet too. (I'm still no fan of broccoli, btw)
The point is that you can change your taste.
And, honestly... do you think that someone who can master all the necessery skills to be an astronaut can't do this?
Sure, it may be harder for some, but astronauts should be dedicated to their work. If you won't go to space without your BigMac, you are not fit to be an astronaut. Sad but true.
Damn right!
What is so bad about being a vegetarian in space? Does the craving for real meat justify research fundings when they can already do amazing stuf with soy beans. So amazing that they actually turn my stomach, because they taste so real! (I am a vegetarian.)
I am positive that there are more important matters concerning space travel that this money could go to. Something that makes a real difference.
I don't know about you, but the enemy of my enemy is not my friend.
No, but you may temporarily share a common goal, and unless you are 100% certain you will win anyway you should welcome anyone on your side.
No matter that if you win this the next battle will probably be against Intel and MS...
Because Mandrake needs cash now! ...or they will have to lay of some of their people.
I placed a preorder for the 8.2 boxed set last night, while i was downloading the distro, just to support them.
Everyone that uses Mandrake should do this, or join the Mandrake Users Club. It's not very expensive and I get a nice boxed set, and some dead tree manuals.
I am pretty sure the Users Club membership could be really useful also, at least for linux newbies.
I posted this earlier but didn't get modded up.I wish English was my first language:-(
Anyway, it's a good thing someone else made the same observation and expressed it well enought to be seen.
Kudos to you!
www.xenu.net has dropped from the google-search for the word "scientology". I tried the same thing a few weeks ago and it turned up as no:4, now there are no critics at all on the first page of the results!
So someone who is curious and makes his first search about scientology gets propaganda only, no critics, no nothing, just commercials...
I think this could actually have an inpact on their ability to recrute new victims.
Well, if you are trying to peddle the kind of bulls**t they do, you don't have much of a choise. If people heard the whole story about evil space empires and such before they were sucked into the cult, few would join... ..and that would disrupt their cashflow.
As we all know that the DMCAs purpose is to protect the revenues of businesses. At everyone elses expense.
The Americans has the capacity, but he felt that the Soviets, as insecure little commies, would be threatened by an American satellite that passed over them. Think U2 incident and you will see how right Einshower was.
And you mean that the US didn't act like "insecure little capitalists" when sputnik flew by? Pot. Kettle. Black. It was the cold war you know.
I agree about the outspending though, capitalism generates more resources per capita, and with both sides having equally smart guys money will decide the outcome. (Think Sid Meyer's Civilization.)
A lot of animals have navigation senses that depend on magnetism, birds and fish for example.
How would they handle a collapse followed by a flip of the magnetic poles.
By a changed behavior and moving patterns, massive decrease in numbers and entire species going extinct? (Obviously some individuals would survive since it has happened before and most existing species has already survived it at least once.)
How would this upset the rest of the ecosystem?
Would these disturbances be drastic enough to affect mankind?
Or should I stick to worrying about the increased cosmic radiation during the initial field collapse...

Well, that was a pretty nice troll.
Not new, but...
Well, growing soy beans would probably take about the same land area as growing meat, and it would be far less complicated.
I just think this "growing meat" business is trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
There is simply no need to produce meat in space.
There might be a market for this cruelty free meat here on earth though.

Wouldn't a nuke detonated in orbit EMP-fry all sattelites within it's line of sight? (Plus, something along the lines of a continent below...)
On the other hand, if nukes are fired in anger humanity have far more pressing problems than GPS redings I guess.
