I'll buy something when:
1) I already know it's worth the money I pay 2) If I'm not sure, then I want to see it first.
If I wanted the OS X, I would buy it w/o wasting any time.
I want new Linux distro? I wouldn't buy it without knowing that it will work on my notebook. Even the big name like Mandrake 9.0 has problem running properly on my machine (where 8.2 did fine), so how can I be sure that Xandros will be OK?

I'm happy having three of this and two of that.
When I want a quick edit on my config file, I use vi. I do most of my programming (Haskell, in this moment) using emacs since it has a nice haskell mode. For quick viewing text? kedit as kioslave in konqueror.
For a quick math, I use kcalc, for the complex math, Octave is the only choice.
My point is, no apps is perfect, you use it for what it's best for. Oh, for PPP, I'm happy with kppp, but I also has a PPP script in/etc/ppp so I can crontab it to connect to my isp at midnight and fentchmail. You can't do that with kppp alone.
Couple of 3D renderers made a frontpage recently, buy I think povray outputs still beat them all.
Just take a look at this guy works, click on "detail" (like this one and be amazed.
I'm using KDE, cups, any many things that are not defaulted by redhat. KDE in RH 8 has some small annoying bugs, and it quite slow. So, I rebuild it with i686 target. kdelibs and kdebase are done and the bugs gone and I think it's a bit faster too. Now I'm drebuilding other KDE packages.
(just a note, rebuilding is a quick-fix for many bugs, remember noatun came with mandrake 8 that doens't play any song? Rebuild it and it's singing.)
I'm a happy RH8, KDE user:-)
Now, about that 'crippled' part. Well, if you know enough that KDE is crippled, then you can un-cripple it yourself. Everything is there, just find it. (except mp3, but apt-get install xmms does the trick)
If you are new to linux, then you don't use KDE anyway, because, if you choose default when install (which all newbies should do), the you end up using gnome.
what we certainly don't need is hundrets of people making up amateur open source fonts, but a few people who know what they're doing.
How those people who know what they are doing know what they are doing? I they had to start somewhere, right?
So go ahead people, release your fonts, mark it version 0.01, and keep improving it. Someone might even pick it up and improve it.
Once it gets version 0.05, it's gonna look a lot nicer. Once it gets verseion 1.0, you will be one of those who know what they are doing
Actually, math to handle 3D is not that hard.
All you need are 4x4 matrix (or 3x4 if you want) and
vectors, then you just compute cross product, matrix multiply, etc.
What's hard is to make it fast.
why can't they just have a hidden keyboard like one
in Sharp linux pda so I can use the keyboard when I
really want to (it's phone, I only need the 0-9 buttons most
of the time)
really?
let's see..it's 200 PDA + 100 phone + 100 wireless modem
, that is about $400.
You may get away with old PDA and cheap phone for less than $300.
but those are last year models, right:-)
there are plenty of them on ebay. I just bought a very old vivitar SLR completed with working 50mm f1.4 and non-working 85mm f1.8. These lens are totally manual.
There are plenty out there, you just have to look for it. Hints: they are not in the US.
Go to country like japan, taiwan, etc. They don't charge for everything. The pop3 email I use (not one that I register with/.) is located on server in asia, quite fast and no ad.
For those who are not so lucky to get there quick enough, go here to see pics and screenshots.
If I have to choose between HP and Treo, I would prefer Treo. It's smaller and I want a phone that can be PDA. This HP is PDA that has phone feature. but for someone who paln to do a lot of wireless web browser, HP beats treo to the ground.
Try this one
It's not very small, but does look good. Especially that black case, which should go very well with your new black flat panel:-)
And for those who remember
Shuttle SV24, it uses the same MB, Shuttle FV24.
and treo becomes $149.
I worry about dropping my visor too, but I never droped it for all these years of using it. So I think $150 for treo is worth upgrade.
I was in the hunt for my new thin-n-light notebook for a while. The lightest one I found was around 2.9lbs. (It was Sony SRsomething, don't remember). Those small notebooks have, well, small batteries. I never found ones that last longer than 2 and a half hours (except one, NEC Daylite, it has extra battery hidden behide monitor tho).
I also looked at some mini notebooks. They are about 2.x lbs, and have battery life about 90min (except one, Fujitsu P series).
I agree that the whole webpad thing is not very practical, but 3 hours of battery life on something 2.5 lbs? That's impressive.
a
sub-notebook that runs 6 hours between charges? Sure, it's not the fastest machine out there, but my aunt (who still uses Win311+Word 6) still beats me (who has PIII + SO6beta on Redhat 7.1) when it comes to typing some letters. SO6beta is great, but my aunt just happens to type 60 word/min.

try ftp.[some university].edu. They are not listed in mirror list, but many of those univs. has it, and makdrake 9, and OO.o and etc

Why do I have to ask someone just because I want to do something that I own it, on my own computer?
In a few years, you will have to ask MS if it's OK to run Word.

yeb, I heard someone sells service for some free software :-)
It has even better render engine than blender. NOt GPL (I guess), but source is there

If they did so, they'll never sold the new iMAc to any school or public places. Mouse is so small, too easy to pick up and take home.
At my collage, we had a new wireless mouse in our presentation room, it last 2 days before someone took it. I guess it ended up on eBay already.

Plus U can call anyone in your contact list easily.
Well, Java is not that bad (for language structure, not performance), it's C++ that's mediocre, even though I prefer C++.
Java is more pf a pure OOP language than C++, just like Haskell is a pure functional language where ML is almost
