The telcos are sick of getting there asses kicked by Cable in the broadband/tv/telco arena.
Right now they are trying to have a go at it with bundleing DSL with DirectTV - but that aint flying so well.
If they can pump out bits this fast it would make them quite a formidible player in the "Convergence" field.
They've already cranked their infrastucture everywhere with DSL repeaters to get around the CO distance issue - Rolling this out shouldn't be a big deal.
Amazing to contemplate it though - 200mps Internet, Telco, HDTV - all on a single pair of CAT3 - wow!
Totally rocks! - I have over 100+ installed - no problems whatsoever - crystal clear
VOIP over WLAN Dead? No fucking way IMHO
I've can even war drive with it! It will hop on any wide open access point connect and go - mind you QOS is dicey - but it's fun anyway to have it hop on some dummy's access point and then 4-digit dial someone at the office.
Obviously you aren't privy to the magic of the Schedule C "actual expenses" write-off.
This is the main reason why people lease a car.
Unless you can take advantage of this write-off (i.e. primarily 1099 income) - you right.

The 3Com Saga

10x the price?
I never remember that - in fact I remember the opposite to be true.
In the mid-90's I typically would compare 3com to Cabletron and Cisco - both of which were insanely priced - 3com was always the best bang for he buck and solid too
Just would like to say that (believe it or not) its really cool to find out that someone goes to sleep at night conjuring the same things in their head as you.
I've never taken the thoughts out as far as you but the concept is very cool.
One thing that troubles me about it though is - if it can be done, should it be done. If you sit down and really contemplate that question alone, you may not like your own answer.
Think in terms of the abuse.
I'm not talking about posting huge illegal mp3, divx and pr0n collections - I'm talking about the wide open child porn sites - the wide open terrorist sites etc...
Someone somewhere would need to be able police that in one way or another
Symantec Corp Ed v9 (when released) is supposed to begin treating spyware/malware etc as a Virus - complete with signature updates and centrallized policy management...
I will soon be an ex-Comcast user now that I finally have a DSL option at my home.
- The Digital Cable box is incredibly slow to surf - They keep up a "Chinese water torture" approach to raising rates. - Outages are a once every couple of months event (TV and Internet) - Customer service is incredibly shitty
I just love your phrase "Global warming, for whatever reason, is undeniably real"
I mean sure "..for whatever reason" is a valid argument and everything, but gee whiz - can we bother you for some science?
I think your misinterpreting the reaction here - most of us geeks in this community are just plain old skeptical scientists in one form or another, that's all.
The alleged "science" used to back up this gigantic steaming bowl of crappola has been thoroughly torn to shreds.
How cool is it going to be when they launch the cow into the audience!
http://www.censornet.com/
I'm a Linux newbie. This article is right up my alley considering that I was just about to deploy CensorNet in my house.
I've got an old PII with 2 nics which I was going to use for this purpose.
I'm just trying to setup some basic pr0n filtering to keep my babysitter in check.
I like this solution because it's easy to install and it is configurable via web page (i.e. great for Linux newbies)
Anybody out there use this?
Multicast no?
You forget what the "killer app" for this is...
HDTV

Good point - that is a limitation

And Intel didn't think 64bit computing was going anywhere ... ;)

Anyway - way kewl concept bro!
What I meant was - yes give each user a single public IP address
...
- but -
NAT each user BEHIND that IP - i.e. overload it
Or think of it as giving everyone there own super basic Linksys SOHO cable router thingy dealy
Why they just don't replace (or begin to replace) all those fucking cable modems which place whatever PC attaches to it DIRECTLY ON THE INTERNET!
....
I mean Jesus - How hard (or how much more money would it have cost) to simply fucking NAT these idiot soccer moms running Windows ME.
Just check out Internet Storm Center and you will see one of the traffic generators is NETBIOS for Christsake!
If on top of that - they'd run any kind of rudimentary basic virus screener on their mail servers they could single handedly wipe out 80% of spam!
Now ask me how I really feel about Comcast
I cant seem to get to that website "bulkmails.org"
....
I keep hitting my refresh button over and over and over and over and over again - but it doesn't come up
hmmmmmm....
ru sure - v9?
/ pr oducts.cfm?ProductID=64
Symantec told me it was just released - and it may be renamed to groupware something something
Check out this link

Symantec Corp Ed v9 (when released) is supposed to begin treating spyware/malware etc as a Virus - complete with signature updates and centrallized policy management ...
..
I know I'm cranked about it
All the spammer has to do is instruct is zombie army to infect all victims machines with some kind of anonymous proxy redirection thing-a-ma-jig ....
Cool factoid ....
They actually own a couple of Class "A" Internet networks
Extinguish -
....
Say good night McAfee, Norton
I will soon be an ex-Comcast user now that I finally have a DSL option at my home.

Good ridance
You know the slashdot link to www.sco.com must be broken or something - I mean my browser opens and everything but nothing shows up.
;}
I just keep hitting refresh over and over and over again - still nothing - hmmmmmm
Someone ought to check those links before posting
I searched for mine .... 127.0.0.1
Couldn't find it in that list!
Good thing too - I'd reallly get busted!
is this thing "Television" you speak of?
...
Seriously -
Its true - My TV consumption is way way down
Slashdot now fills that hole in my day !
Card counting will soon be a thing of the past anyway.
...
More and more casinos now use these perpetual shuffing thingys which continously shuffle a monster multideck shoe
Every hand played has the same odds as every other one
