I think the visual deceit only works from those specific angles (because of shadows and whatnot that fool the eye and brain of the beholder).
I do actually wonder though what the sculptures would look like from different angles: it would be interesting to see what's *really* there, and not just what our brain thinks there is.
Otherwise I'll stick with XFree86, which is getting faster and smaller with each release.
They've been at it for almost 20 years... 20 more years and it will be acceptably small and fast..
ofcourse it could be acceptably small and fast by then, because CPU speed and data storage capacities will be much better in 20 years;)
But when they start messing with my CLI, then it's personal. I'm not going to sit here and let Red Hat infect my beloved tcsh with those annoying quirks from bash.
The solution is quite simple: don't use redhat and quit whining. You don't own bash or csh and you sure as hell don't even remotely have the right to complain about the modifications redhat is making. It's free software and nobody is forcing you to use it.
I for one would be happy to see that something I "created" becomes popular. Afterall, isn't that one of the main reasons those guys do it?
And many of them also have some ideological views (like breaking the monopoly of a certain software giant)
I think their market share actually DOES matter to them.
Okay, let me be clear on this one first: this is merely *my* opinion and I too am in no way a linux guru (hell I' on a win95 machine right now:)).
Debian is in no way an uber-geek distro or anything. The installation is actually one of the best I've ever seen. This is mainly because you can choose the order in which you want to set up your installation.
If you don't know what to do, the installer gives you the most logical next step and alternatives. Switching back and forth between different installation steps is also very easy (if you screw up or forget something). The terminal also comes in quite handy sometimes (although I don't think it's something for newbies)
The only thing that makes Debian "hard" to install is the fact that you have to use your keyboard to navigate (tab, arrows, enter) instead of pointing and clicking. And if you would just take 5 minutes to master your keyboards navigational keys, you'dn notice it's not such a daunting task afterall:)
Same goes for configuring the system after initial boot. Debconf will help you trough it all, with almost every ease of the graphical configuration tools on other distros. Although the package selection can be a pain in the ass, but then again, you could just select tasks, instead of individual packages.
I think the main problem is that some people don't like the Debian installation/configration because ncurses looks "old":)

Is there anything preventing this new standard from being used for other peripherals like NICs and SCSI cards? If so, why not just phase out PCI completely?
Is it just me, or are people nowadays just throwing around with standards? I mean come on, if I were to buy a new PC today, I wouldn't be able to use my old SB16 ISA with it, if I wanted to. Imagine if they would stop with PCI too..
I'm all for evolution, but not for changing standards every two years, rendering perfectly functional (maybe a bit "older" and "slower") hardware (and even software) useless.
Quite offtopic: a couple of weeks ago I tried to play "Simon the sorcerer 2" and I couldn't get it to work! hooray for MS?
I can't wait until I can get a dual agp card. I bet if they start making dual agp mobos then dual monitors will become very common.
three things:
1) Dual head AGP cards already exist, Matrox even has a triple head AGP card.
2) What's wrong with PCI cards? If you use it for work (like you said in the first part of your comment), I don't see what's wrong with it. I'm using 1 AGP and 1 PCI right now and I'm happy the way it is. usually I use my main monitor, which has a higher resolution, for coding and at the same time my second screen is cluttered with IRC, IM and online-documentation
3) I don't think dual AGP slotted mobo's will become standard real soon: people have lots of PCI slots and that din't encourage people to go dual/triple/... screen. I rather think that dual AGP will remain something for techies, geeks and professionals.
And remember kids: the more monitos you have, the larger your penis is!
Think about it... the people in India must think we're monsters and that we're all going to hell (or whatever they call it)
Don't judge a culture by it's eating habbits... there are cultures who eat bugs and other slimey stuff: in the west we eat snails, mussels, oisters, shrimps, squids etc.
I actually wonder what dog tastes like.
Also Iwouldn't mind tasting:
kangaroo
Ostrich
snake
crocdile
any exotic animal that lives in a zoo;)
Don't let the "icky" factor stop you from trying stuff. Because one day you may find out it is toolate to TRY, and then you'll die knowing that you'll never know...
Think about the fact that Korean gamer's can become official "sportsmen" with corporate sponsorship etc.
Game finals are even brought live on TV there.
Gaming IS a sport there, look at "starcraft" the prizes you can win in the rounaments are insane.
But that trend is starting to rise in the west too: think of CPL for instance, it's a worldwide event with international clans fighting for the first place (internationally!) in FPS games. And some clans even have dedicated fans nowadays, some players even have groupies (I kid you not: pretty girls, who take pictures with their webcams ofthemselves in their bra's holding a paper with the name of their favourite CS player for instance).
In a way I think that's a logical evolution in the world of sports: why would sport have something to do with only the physical? Look at chess, and snooker etc.
I mean, dedicated gamers even behave like real life jocks: they have the whole "yeah we're so 1337" thing going and act real tough (online that is;))
I don't know who the fuck modded the parent "flamebait", but I suggest (s)he looks up the meaning of the word.
Sometimes I could just kill these damn nitwit moderators for being such morons...
Look man, you want to do this, so just do it. Don't listen to all those people who say that there are already (too) many 3D/animation apps out there.
And you nitwits, consider this: If he succeeds in writing YAAP (Yet Another Animation Program) it will result in haveing more choice. What's bad about that? And if he should fail, wtf do you care? He asked for advice, not for (de)motivation.
And you know? Sometimes, you have to reinvent the wheel.. because sometimes the important thing is not where you are going, but how you get there. For him personally this would be a great experience and he'd learn a lot (maybe he'll learn not to Ask/. anymore;))
Good luck and have fun:)

hooray for microwave pasta! hooray for other microwave dinners!
Tony Hawk was famous before he got his game (as is the case with any sports related video game character)
What the writer means is, that the fictional game characters, who are known by millions too, don't get any media attention.
Kinda logical though... imagine reading an interview with Nintendo's Mario: -interviewer: so, basically, after pikachu and the pokémon hype... you could say the audience forgot about you. right? -Mario: Listen mister, I've been around for decades, Pikachu is just a damn rodent... I'll get my comeback... because I'm real and pokémon is just a passing hype... *sobs* where are my mushrooms? I need mushrooms...
and don't "troll" or "flamebait" this, because you all know it's true... give me 10 titles of decent, original, replayable, perhaps educational games that have been released in the past 2 or 3 years...
Kudos to you if you can name 10, because I can't (anymore).
I think it's a shame, I started playing games on the commodore 64 and I've owned several consoles (from 8 bit to 64 bit) and all I've seen is an increase in "visual effects" and a steady but certain decrease in originality (perhaps everything is *used*?) and gameplay (every recent popular game is nothing more but clicking real fast - but they call it "aiming").
So, here's a message to the game studios:
Get your heads out of your asses and give us some quality games. Games that will keep the player up until 7 am!
Where I live (.be) the only reality shows we have are "big brother" (third or fourth season now, and completely CRAP) and "expeditie robinson" (I think it's the equivalent of survivor).
Now most of you people talk about a show called "Junkyard" or something, I've never seen it, but the concept is marvelous. If this "Rough Sience" is what it claims to be and resembles "Junkyard" I personally would watch it. Why?
Because it actually sounds interesting, educational and hella cool:) I mean come on... what is more interesting? getting assignments like "(rough science) one of your teammates has been isolated, but he has a radio receiver/transmitter with him that works on such and such frequencies. Here are some parts, assemble a radio of your own and rescue him by finding out his location" OR "The ladies have to walk around topless for a week, but the men aren't allowed to drink water (big brother)"
Another thing: IMO the producers also figured that there is an untapped resource of more intelligent and demanding viewers who don't like watching stuff like "big brother" (because it's stupid and mindless IMO) and they decided to put some effort into attracting these people.
Another interesting concept would be: a couple of teams who get a programming assignment and they get X hours to complete it. Afterwards (depending on the results) the winning team could choose some form of (computer related?) research which they can fund with the prizemoney.
And ofcourse the sourcecodes would be made publicly available and at the end of each season people would be able to vote online which of the codes of that season should get the award of "excellent fooness":)
do you really want to promote Linux by showing 3D graphics that have absolutely nothing to do with the OS?
Even if it isn't for the graphics, the newly converted user will feel betrayed when he finds out most games simply won't work under Linux unless he hassles around with Wine(X).
I've got some serious doubts about this one... they should show the true forté's of the OS instead of some eyecandy
Who gives a hoot about legislation when 9/11 affected the society we live in?
Try being a foreigner (actually I was born in.be, but that doesn't seem to matter...) in a country where people are more and more eager to think in ways of right-extremists. Post-9/11 society has become more paranoia and xenophobic than ever: every Muslim is associated with Taliban and Terrorism (the new buzzword)
You can make laws to prevent (racial) discrimination but what good are they when the people you live among are becoming anti-muslim? You can't force people to like eachother and you sure as hell can't force them to be more intelligent, that's my concern...
I want to feel at home in this country, *my* country (I was born here damn you!) When that happens, I'll start concerning myself about the privacy part.
Someone took "firewall" too seriously? :) :p)
