I just ordered a DVR-A04 for $299 I've seen the OEM for $249. The quality DVD+R drives were in the paper this weekend for $449 (HP @ CompUSA). The DVD-R disks ($2-$3) are near half the price of the DVD+R ($5-$6) disks. DVD-R has near 100% compatibility while +R is at about 70% and if you have an early model DVD player it has almost no chance.
I have used the DVR-A03 for over a year and have had no problems.

The new Redhat Beta "Limbo" has a similiar feature set that includes gcc 3.1. Seeing that Mandrake is based off of Redhat they are probably just moving right along following Redhat's lead
I am personally waiting to see benchmarks from retail off the shelf cards using the supplied drivers. ATI always seems to have good lab numbers but comes up short when the released product is tested under everday conditions. Also as others have pointed out it's not too impressive comparing it to video cards that have been out for awhile now. I hope that ATI can bring a truly competitive final product including stable drivers and I look forward to seeing the benchmarks against a released NV30 in the next several months. Christmas could be expensive this year.
It is reported that the next generation NVIDIA GPU (NV30) will contain technology that they got when the bought 3DFX. This would include work done on the Voodoo 5 6000 and any prototypes 3DFX had been working on. So maybe you can look forward to that?
DVD's generally are priced pretty good compared to CD's. I spend an average of $12 for each new DVD. I have found some for $6. Most these DVD's come loaded with extras and multi-disc sets. CD's are priced way too high, with no extra's. I usually get my CD's from a used CD store. $18.00 for a new CD is outrageous. Of course maybe the DVD industry has not been able to get together and fix prices like the CD industry.
For fans of the Prokudin-Gorskii Collection pictures. By searching the catalog it came up with 2608 pictures that you can view. Most of these are in black and white. Just click the link and start viewing. Be warned that it is a bit slow, and slahdotting may make it worse.
It seems the Trailers are becoming more of interest than the movies. I make it a point to get to the movie on time so I don't miss the trailers. My girlfriend could not understand how I could like the "Hulk" trailer, that should next to nothing about a movie that will not be out for a year. I thought it was cool
The weather here in Michigan is still too cold. I for one support global warming. Bring it on, the warmer the better. I can't believe that global warming is only bad. I heard that they can grow crops further North now than they could before and there are longer growing seasons providing more crops. And soon people may be able to live in Canada.
You know it looked just like the scene from Karate Kid where Mr. Miyagi opens a can of whoop-ass on those punks. If you use photoshop to color Mr Miyagi green you will see a near perfect match.
Somehow these people at HP convinced their boss to do a "Kazaa Usability Study". In other words they spent all day downloading MP3's, Bootleg videos, and whatever else they could find on the Kazaa network. Maybe their next project will be a "Porn Website Usability Study".
Many sites have been stating that the next price cut won't be until October. I also found it interesting that Intel is selling some of it's stock in AMD.
For those looking for a cheap home theater PC upgrade, the Creative Audigy sound card provides Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and an integrated IEEE 1394 Firewire port. I was surprised how easy it was to capture video from my Sony Camcorder through the 1394 port and burn it to a Video CD. PriceWatch has several companies listing it for under $60.
Am I the only one who likes KOffice?
Try it if you don't want to shell out money for Staroffice or want a great alternative to Openoffice. I have been using it for about a year and although still limited compared to MS Office I like it alot. Here's what it comes with:
KWord - A frame-based word processor
KSpread - spreadsheet application.
KPresenter - full-featured presentation program.
Kivio - Visio®-style flowcharting application.
Kontour - vector drawing application.
Krita - raster-based image manipulation program
Kugar - tool for generating business quality reports.
Kchart - ntegrated graph and chart drawing tool.
Sorry I am also one of those who thinks "screw diversity". Linux should rally behind a few key projects, instead of several projects trying to re-invent the wheel

FORTRAN looks modern and up to date compared to COBOL. I actually had to take COBOL in college and I miss every minute of time I lost learning it.
It would be nice if they included KDE 3.1 (alpha). That way I can try and break 2 birds with one stone.
