  1. Interviews on For CS Majors, How Important Is the "Where?" · · Score: 1

I've been out of school for 4 years (UConn, CS), and am now being asked to participate in the interview process for my company. When I look over a resume, I really only take note that the person had a technical degree that was close to CS, and that their GPA wasn't in the gutter.

Where the degree came from is meaningless to me. I've turned down people with perfect grades from MIT and Berkley.

On an interview, personality matters the most, because if you can't work well in my company, I really don't care if you are a star programmer.

Also, go to a school where there is a good selection of women. You probably won't find a whole lot in the engineering buildings.

You'd be surprised at how happy customers can get when they see an engineer/manager on site, helping them with their problems. For about 2 months, I was commuting by air back and forth between Boston and Philadelphia, working in a lab that does in fact have a VPN connection. When the project was done, the one thing the customer said made the most difference was the "face time" that we spent with them.

Say what you will about inept managers, but showing up in person makes a huge difference.

I recall a funny explanation about a theory for an investment newsletter.

You start with a pool of investors, say 16,000.

You tell half of them a stock is going to go up, and the other half that its going to go down.

At the beginning of the next week, you send another newsletter to the X/2 (8,000) people who received the correct prediction from the previous week.

Rinse, wash, repeat, until you get a group of a few hundred people who think you are right 100% of the time.

Then scam them out of money somehow.

If he posted stock information, company information, predictions based on inside information - that sounds illegal to me

If he posted about "WHOLE FOODS RULEZZZ, OATS SUXXX", he's just another idiot online

By posting these messages, it doesn't sound like he was violating any laws by interfering with another business. Standing outside a Wild Oats B&M store with a sign that says "Go to Whole Foods", qualifies as a civil offense (tort?).

The best legal recourse OATS or whoever might have is a libel suit - and they would have to show how the posting negatively affected their business, and exactly what wasn't true.

One big hurdle with IPTV is channel changes (surfing).

With the newer video codecs, the GOP sizes are large (in the 1-2 second range).

So you might have to wait 2 seconds for a channel's initial IFrame to come in.

This scenario is completely unacceptable to the normal analog TV viewer.
