  1. OT: Threaded Fasteners on Amazon to Launch Online Grocery Store · · Score: 0

I recently noticed that they are now selling threaded fasteners, including machine screws. I don't understand their approach. I guess someone in their marketing department decided they could sell weird stuff. Even if amazon is cheaper, I will probably still use McMaster-Carr for this type of thing as their selection/search system is *much* more refined.

  2. how will this help? on New Hardware Design Software · · Score: 0

"we are trying to unify both the CAD design and analysis so that they are carried out concurrently." I'm not sure how this is going to help me. When I design a mechanical part, necessary dimensions and geometries are the very first things that I consider. After that, *if* FEanalysis is necessary, it's no big deal to just re-do the mesh and start over if I change part of the design. It only takes a few seconds on a p4 3.2ghz machine. My point is that I *rarely* need to use FEA software... if you have a fundamental understanding of the strength of materials and some common sense, then most design decisions are easily made. But then, I'm only a machine/tool designer/programmer/controls engineer/gopher... not a product designer, so I am not the expert here. Show me some fatigue simulation software (it may exist) and I'll be impressed. In fact, I may even go ahead to make the purchase order.

  3. SAP on Open Source vs. the Database Vendors · · Score: 1, Funny

At my company we are making a move to MySQL in order to accomplish what SAP cannot do for our assembly lines. This involves keeping track of incoming and outgoing material. SAP will still keep track of what happens with the finished goods, and received parts. Why we keep SAP probably has something to do with the corporate jacuzzi.

  14. Why do they fear on demand movie downloads? on Netflix Pioneers Industry To Get Left in the Dust? · · Score: 1

I don't know how Netflix could fear on-demand movie downloads. First off, they're already competing with bittorrent based download sites. Secondly, I would much rather pay $20 and get movies delivered to me through the mail than pay $20 (+Cost of bandwidth usage). Besides, there's still a big part of the market that does not have fast internet connections and would rather not watch/figure out how to watch movies on their (slow/adware/spyware filled) computers.
