    Maybe there are more secure methods out there, but I stick my stuff in a password protected .rar file. It solves the compression problem, I can actually remember the password, and the software to recover it from somewhere else is fairly redily available.

    It is amazing that when someone decides to use Linux it is front page news still. Are Linux deployments honestly that few and far between? We are not going to have to read about this company switching back to Windows 6 months from now are we?

    Actually, in comparison to NT4 and 2K, 2K3 is a brick wall. I don't believe there has been a remote compromise in the default install of 2K3 since its launch.

    I just tried Foxit and I love it. I just uninstalled Adobe PDF reader and one reboot later it is out of my life for good. I don't know if I should thank you or offer you my first born. Foxit and acrobat reader do the same thing, Foxit is 2.5 meg and Reader is 40.

    I hate Adobe Acrobat reader more and more every single day. That application has one simple task and it is quickly growing to a 40 meg, ad-displaying, nagware mammoth. Adobe reader persistantly wants to be in Windows startup and nags me to download a seemingly endless string of updates.

    I have always said that pdf support is one area where Linux smokes Windows hands down. I have wanted someone (anyone) else to give me some alternitave to reader for Windows for a long time.

    Take your ad-ware bundled bloated crap elsewhere Adobe! When MS says they have had high demand to support the format I believe them.

    And as soon as Firefox gotto maybe 5% market share people found as many vulns in it, as in IE. Maybe they were not exploited as often, but they were still there.

    Maybe a simmilar experience would be had if Linux started to make hedway into the desktop?

    If Red Hat does not work try SUSE, if SUSE does not work, try Slackware, if Slackware does not work, try Debian, if Debian does not work try Red Hat.

    Also, if you notice that everyone is like "well they are using SAP, so they should be using Windows duh!" But if someone posted an "Ask Slashdot" and said "Were is installing a SAP solution, do we pick Linux or Windows". They would probably laughed at for even considering Windows.

    I read somewhere that some of hte teams spend ~ 1 million on their cars and they produce less than 1 HP. Is this true? If so, you could probably tear out the solar panels and batteries and replace the electric engine(s) with a cheap gas one that is good for 200 miles per galon and pocket the other $975,000.

    Seriously, I am a die hard Google fanatic but I still use Yahoo mail because it is very good. Gmail is not bad, but is still isn't Yahoo mail.

    And the only thing more useless than blogs are blogs about blogs. Just how movies written about writers always seem make it into production but never seem to be popular. Bloggers think blogging is a hot topic becasue they are bloggers, and for them it is.

    I fully agree with you, I was able to move from PhotoShop, to PaintShop, to Fireworks without having to relearn all the basics. GIMP on the other hand had a more difficult learning curve.

    PS, for the windows users out there looking for a free alternitave to GIMP, check out Paint.NET

    So it isn't 12 meg, it is 4. And the 4 meg costs $67 even in trial. Also, that is not a symetrical 4 meg, the upload is slower. Intel could sample 10Ghz processors today if they wanted also, but when will the mainstream actually see them?

    When this technology does hit mainstream availability where will Cable, DSL, FiOS, and WiMax be? It isn't accurate to compare the specs of a future technology with what Cable and DSL are have today.

    How much good does it really do to have a trademark on "Gmail" if they don't own the domain?

    I think instead of buying domains I think will be popular, I am going to trademark the names and sue the companies that buy the domians.

    This could be an ausome scam, you could even let your existing domain expire, and when someone grabs it, sue them. Profit!

    With being 64 bit it also requires much more RAM. So if you load your system with 2x as much RAM, and an equally clocked 64 bit CPU you will get exactly the same performance as long as your 64 bit drivers are good enough.

    Currently the most significant gain for this change is in marketing.

    Hacker vs cracker rhetoric aside I do agree with your point. If you don't know how it is attacked how are you supposed to know what to secure against? Also, for protection against basic Windows malware user education is as effective as anything else.

    My opinion is that Google is doing this to promote (improve) FOSS and Linux. It gives them a good opportunity to scout talent and also improve the only other real alternative to Microsoft products. If Ballmer ever does try to kill Google they could fight back by expanding this program.

    It sort of makes you wonder if it will be any easier for them under UNIX. If they can't get compatibility with Windows what makes me think that with UNIX they won't just run into a different set of problems? More Slashdot yellow journalism for you.

    This might make a great ask.slashdot question and maybe a cool home project. What do I have to go through to broadcast from AM or FM from my home? What equipment (HAM?) would you suggest using to do so?

    Is there additional requirements to broadcasting non-royalty free music? If I do decide to broadcast music then how much do I pay and to whom? I would LOVE to learn more about this.

    The key statement there is "and/or Telnet Services". Almost every single Cisco router I have seen is running telnet. Lots of people are still using 12.2 though.
