You sound just like all the other people I know playing WoW but I still don't get what is so great about that game. It is multiplayer final fantacy or zelda from what I have seen of it.
Perhaps you don't really need that 6-bedroom house in Silicon Valley with a 10 acre garden, three garages and four bathrooms.
That is a pretty unrealistic perception of how people here live. Most CEO's could barely afford a place like that in Silicon Valley. With a title "Senior Software Developer" you would lucky to be able to afford a 2 bedroom apartment and food in Silicon Valley. After paying taxes to the "Team America World Police" a household income of 100K is about what is required to live comfortably even in a rural area.
Someone else start giving away a distro based on Linspire and named it Freespire. They ended up having Freespire renamed to "squiggle" to eliminate product confusion! That reminds me of another story I know:)
All good points. The other problem they face is that they cannot simply rebuild buildings on stilts becasue they would not sustain the high winds. The best solution may be something like my house that sits near small river; An above ground basement. The first floor is about 6 feet above raised ground. Moving the garage into an above ground basement may also make it cost effective. This is not a total solution (~8 ft vs 20) but it is better than what they have in place today.
You can get a copy of Now You're Talking! for about $20 and the exam itself will cost $14. NYT! is a very good book for the exam if you also want to understand the concepts. If you think Ham is too low tech, check out some of the DSP stuff and homebrew DSP equipment
Those are all valid points, but there are plenty of managers out there that micromanage technical work when they have no idea what they are doing. Many of them believe they should be responsible for all decision making (even technical) when many times that is better left to the techies.
This is why techies should be managed by other people who also have a technical backround. Currently all the managers in my building are technical and I couldn't be happier with the work environment. Communication works so much better when people understand what they are communicating.
The problem with this is that it opens a huge security hole. If any random SIP client can make a calls directly to your phone adapter then what is to prevent abuse?
If they are remotely using another environment what makes you think that environment cannot also aquire a virus? You can restrict their permissions, but you can do that on a PC too.
You have to give them enough access to install their own programs and read email attachments or you are limiting yourself to 5% market share from the start. If you give them admin access on platform you are endangering everyones data, not just theirs.
The idea that everyone not posting to slashdot is some clueless noob that can't point and click is your miscalculation, not mine.
As PC's get cheaper people are only moving further away from thin clients. If people are so willing to use a thin client then why have all the attempts to push them failed so miserably?
People don't like to go backwards. Would you trade your PC for one? No? then stop arguing for the idea, if you don't want to do it then don't expect anyone else will want to either.
They could likely do that in Jabber but if they are using Skype then it wouldn't be Jabber. It would be difficult to say how hard it would be to migrate without inside knowledge of their infrastructure.
And what would Google do with bob@skype.com when they also have a seperate bob@gmail.com ?
Are they going to tell Skypes 54 million user base to take a hike or get a gmail account? Besidesm there are better clients than Skype out there like Gizmo and Google has already stated that they don't want to get involved with calls to/from PSTN networks.
Why would Google spend 4 billion basicially to aquire only the Skype software and have to send 54 million users packing when they can do it their own way for a fraction of the cost.
Especially after google already launched their own service suggesting they are now going to aquire Skype is an utterly stupid suggestion.
I don't see where this door at over $4,000 could be that useful. How much air passes as they are waiting for the door to open? Given that the door has ~500 seperate slides, how good is the seal when it is closed? Wouldn't a simple 2 door system be more practical and 5% of the price?
I am sure he never stopped, slowed down, or bothered to take it out of the car.... [/sarcasm]
Don't give them any ideas, for most other games releasing the same game with a different city would be considered an "expansion pack".
And AntiVir

So supporting an international effort like Linux is OK but having off shore operations is not OK? No double standards here.
That feature is named "Click To Call"

I have tested almost every other app people have suggested to me and WinRAR still leads the way.
Intel shipped more processors, Dell sold more PCs, and the sun came up.

Maybe if they _do_ form their own seperate network they can implement more secure (thus incompatible) mail protocols.
This is why techies should be managed by other people who also have a technical backround. Currently all the managers in my building are technical and I couldn't be happier with the work environment. Communication works so much better when people understand what they are communicating.
Additionally, VoIP will be the technology that makes video phones a reality. Video is something just not possible with a standard analog line.

Disconnecting their service is so easy no wonder its # 1.

Exactly, 99b was the last version of ICQ before AOL bought it crapified it. The popularity tanked just after AOL got involved.

Actually I think AOL's purchase of ICQ had more to do with the dive than Microsoft launching MSN messenger.
Does also push/publication format also make it a greater security thread? Does it add additional overhead to dynamicially support it rather than RSS?
