Go into KDE control panel, click around in the styles section, kde begins locking up. I start closing stuff. kicker is starting to lock up also. I try to run a terminal from quick launch and get an error to the effect of KDE init cannot find .... executable. I log out of kde, and it puts my in a shell. You will never see that much bandwidth because there are so many other bottlenecks. Your throughput is only as fast as the slowest node. To be honest I believe advancements in fiber technology like Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and advancements in router processor/RAM technology will have a greater effect on your throughput than this. Although it will be a while before your throughput from the net is faster than your HDD can handle you do make a valid point about the limits of the technology. In particular with LAN file servers and transfer rates. Gig Ethernet cards already come standard on Power Macs. I think the next evolution of PC design will be RAM drives and storage. You will also see larger HDD cache, and more use of cache in general.

I think right now MS is sort of pushing minimal hardware requirements in attempt to spark PC sales. The next revolutionary product could be a stripped down version of XP. The full versions of XP supports both updating and clean installs. They could ship an OEM install version of windows without all the extra crap that would fit on a zip disk. They could also remove some backwards compatibility and as many of the default services as possible. Aside from being smooth, it would also be more stable and secure. I know 98se could be stripped to a smaller footprint than 98, with any luck they will do the same with XPse.
