  1. Oh don't get me wrong, I think there are a lot of factors at play here that damage current and future generations but I don't think it's the availability of tech. The fact that tech cannot overcome the issues present is not tech's fault.

  2. The Germans have a saying loosely translated: The fish stinks from the head.

I don't consider management to be employees anymore. I know it's not fair and sure as hell it isn't objective but in my opinion, a lot of upper management types are either greedy or try to push a personal agenda.

Companies with management that is not like that usually don't have these issues...

  3. Whether you can motivate and excite yourself has very little to do with the availability of tools.

It depends on your mind. There are people out there building primitive shacks in the woods with stone axes.

Nothing is interesting in and of itself. It becomes interesting if our minds take interest, simple as that. If novelty is the only hook your mind is capable of, then you're plain fucked...

  4. The amount of karmic justice happening right now is just great.

I'm very sorry for the employees who really bear the least of the responibility for what Google has been doing lately... but from a commercial PoV, it' could only have happened to a handful of more deserving companies.

  5. I can only agree... I bought the same mobo off of ebay a few weeks back the replace my faulty one. Overclocked my i5-4670k gives me single core power I will be hard pressed to pull ahead of without investing several hundreds in a completely new system...

As a Swiss, I don't have much faith in the EU's version of democracy... not that ours isn't also going down the drain, mind you, but for me working democracy means that the voting populace is open and able to rational discussion instead of fear- and hate-mongering. It also means that the press is free (not just from the government but also from the agenda of stockholders).

I don't know a single country to date where I get that sense.

  9. I'm not sure how this is even remotely relevant, a small anecdote aside, even if it was a subscription to Kink.com.

As if it was shameful or abnormal to read Penthouse. Or is it the gifting of it?

  10. Four legs good, two legs bad?

    Wait, that doesn't rhyme...

  11. Yo whipslash... I think this one actually might have read the article... That wouldn't bode well for that anti-troll filter that was mentioned a while ago.
Still, it seems to be somewhat more intelligent than the average troll.

    Interesting specimen for sure.

  12. While I mourn the loss of opportunity every living year of such a genius represents... I have to admit that I am interested to see what the Big Bang Theory makes of this.

I'd think those are info bits for a second or third contact...

We can make the next plaque with black or Asian people, I don't care.

Human curiosity draws us to new and exciting things. I'm not sure how driving a tricycle would interest anyone who already drives a grown-up bike on a daily basis.

This all seems kinda logical. If you're interested in topics outside of mainstream political view, there is no other choice than show you conspiracy theories... because every theory outside of mainstream has the potential to be a conspiracy theory until it's proven. I would go as far as to say that it is a pretty good guess that you'll find a conspiracy nut or two among people interested in flat tax or basic income.

My main gripe is just that the categories in which these algorithms group things are just too broad for my taste. Or, to be fair, I just might not know the right terms to look for.

This problem is most apparent when searching for porn, I must admit. Might be that porn consumers usually don't give as much of a damn or the algorithms are just not as good, I don't know.

  16. I am a member of Goodreads and it's really bad at showing me stuff I like based on what I liked before.

But that's kinda to be expected... most of these systems seem to be based in tags and usually not very good ones at that.

Same thing with porn. Amazon is sometimes able to actually make worthwhile connections based on my browsing habits and previous purchases...

But all in all I have yet to encounter ONE SINGLE algorithm that is actually makes my live somewhat consistently easier.

Most seem to be no better than a placebo.

Sure it's simplistic... but so is "water is wet" and that rule of thumb still got us pretty far.

On the other hand, modern SJWs have to bend over backwards once or twice (a sight to see. It would be approproiate for variete!) to mold science to their worldview.

I think Damore was on point with his basic premise. A LOT of today's work culture is not good for a lot of women AND a lot of men as well. If "People who feel good do better work and making people feel good takes a bit of investment" is too far a stretch for people to wrap their minds around, then I'm very sorry, you just don't deserve quality products to sell.
