PPS, what I saw was on new drug applications and not the current market. But here's a reference on the subject: http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/jcen?jnprdf/66/i07/htm l/np030096l.html
I heard it cited where I work (a pharma) but can't find the reference. Sorry! Now that you mention it, I think it was 50% natural products, 25% biologicals and 25% synthetics. It will be a few years yet till combinatorial chemistry makes that much impact!:>)
But natural antibiotics just can't be patented (think of it as the OSS medicine), and companies don't give a sh*t about them.
Not so, not so. Drug and biotech companies and public research institutes still grow exotic fungi and plants to look for new classes of active compounds. In the past 10 years, about 25% of all new drugs came from natural compounds or derivatives.
I'd like to know what part of the brain can come up with a quote like this:
"Then you wake up at the high school level and find out that the illiteracy level of our children are appalling." --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 2004
I guess the point I'm making is that this language has a strong appeal to people like myself who are just looking to use it to solve problems and/or make problem solving tools
Thanks for the thought!
We have a bioinformatics group where I work and Python is the language of choice when they need to crunch alot of numbers. I understand there is a nice interface to the R statistical engine and many other useful facilities. I've never gotten any of them interested in Java which we use for our systems in IT...
It's optional now, in test phase. Soon it will be mandatory or you don't get the cheaper rates..
Really, it doubt this will get very far. Most people wont be willing to go through the hassle for a brief discount. (Except, perhaps, in MN!) The real scary part is the discount for driving in "safe" areas -- every major city is going to fight this for sure, on grounds of discrimination!
Sure hope it's not our highwater mark in space exploration! Have to wonder sometimes....
I was a mere 9 at the time, and I thought Apollo 8 was a very impressive feat too. Can you imagine being the first to leave Earth's gravity, and wondering if you would get back?
If you let your job fail, you lose your income, your wife will definitely leave you, and you'll probably end up losing your home, most of your posessions, what little access you have to your kids...
You're seeing that you can't find real and lasting happiness from external things: posessions, status, even a mate. The good news is the fact that you see something is missing. But the trick is, only you can find out what that is! You might check out what some of the "Eastern" religions have to say about this -- the classical, Raj Yoga (see the Yoga Sutra) or Buddhism or Zen. I've found these practices to give me more focus, get more done in the normal work day -- and to enjoy my time when I'm off!
The IRS 501(c)(3) standard takes that definition a bit further to require that the non-profit must be doing something for the public good, rather than just giving money to the people who set it up
To clarify a bit: many non-profits aren't tax exempt, like a local social or hobby club. To be tax exempt you have to be an organized religion or provide some community service. Guess Mozilla claimed the former!
4) Children become densensitized to sex, making sex less enjoyable
Actually, porn makes most people desenitized to porn -- it get's to be rather silly after a few thousand images and there's not much new. That said, I'd prefer to try and block it from pre-teens, but not legislate.
