Thanks, I wish I hadn't posted earily in this article so I could use my mod points. Now, my only question is how fast is decent speed? I'm about to build my own server (actually I'm going to have some help, but I want to at least sound like I know what I'm doing) nothing fancy. I don't expect a huge hit count or anything, so would using older (500-750 mhz)second hand computers, properly upgraded memory and storage, work? Also would you recomend replacing the powersuply. One the guys whoes helping me swears that will save me money in the long run on energy costs, but I don't know if its worth the cost.

I was really excited to see this article, because oddly enough I am seriously considering setting up my own webserver. In fact am thinking of running slashcode. So far everyone has been saying that the article generally sucks. So the question remains where should I start? I was thinking of buying a few of my company's used PCs and building a cluster... that scares me a bit, as I'm not a computer genius, but I can get a great deal on these computers (between 5 and 10 500mhz wintel computers)

OK, I know that was rambling so to recap simply, is it better to go with a expenive single MP solution like the article, or with a cheaper cluster of slow/cheap computers

Also I have only bought very popular gadgets that had at least a small english language following so I was able to find my own tech support when I needed it. So while I have never had a problem that wasn't worth the gadget I still wouldn't spend any more then I was willing to lose.

May I suggest instead, we pressure legislators not to make a blanket law and then pock holes in it. If that is their approach they will undoubtedly leave perfectly acceptable actions illegal. It is my belief that the lawmakers should always error on the side of freedom and smaller government. List which situations to which the law applies, and not a list of when the law it doesn't apply.
Just so you know I wrote this three times. I was so angered the first time that the draft made no since and the second time I wrote too emotionally. This time I wrote it too fast, but now I'm tired of writing it.

The first is Windows, which is the most expensive option for people who want all the hard stuff done for them. Second is RedHat which is less costly, but required some work to learn. To make it easier they had linux tech support though RedHat. Finally Dell offered a No OS computer do customers who wants to the least expensive option at the expense of being required to do all the work in both installing and supporting the Free OS of their choice.
It was this final option that MS's new policy removed. Dell now simply uses FreeDOS as a loophole to replace the third option.

I never want my local government to have their hands tied in choosing the most appropriate platform. Many of these laws, even if the legislators don't want to admit it are simply anti M$ laws, but they could hurt other companies as well. Anyway back to the point. I can think of several examples were using commercial solutions would save money over the long run. Basically I think anytime you regulate away choice you are hurting your self. You also get most of the full feature applications you want. Supposedly because it uses Linux many applications whould only require a simple recompile. I havn't found it that easy, but everything I need has already been ported. I used to carry a palm for phone numbers and a datebook, along with a laptop for divx and connecting to my companies network.
