A whole lot of critics and fans would disagree with you there pal, including me.

For those of us who actually like character-driven SF that tells a unified story - and we are myriad - DS9 was pure gold.

You didn't like it, I can see that. No problem. But don't presume to speak for the rest of us. Each ST series has its own type of fan. Most of them like more than one ST series (I also love TNG) but we each have our favorite depending on the kind of storytelling we prefer.

Thanks. Good points. Though I think that when it was released the Dreamcast actually was the most powerful console.

The PSP's faster processor means it can... produce flashier graphics.

The DS's second screen, touchscreen, microphone, longer battery life, and built-in chat software means it can do more with the games it has than the PSP. Whether or not that potential is ever realized remains to be seen. There are some exciting prospects, though.

I tried the Metroid demo, too. And I can say that the DS will be THE handheld platform for FPS games. The touchscreen makes a fantastic substitute for a mouse.

Can't argue with you about the lack of games, yet. Nintendo really needs to get moving on that.

Most of the PSP's launch titles, from what I've read, are pretty lame. Lots of PS2 rehashes. They seem to be in the same boat with Nintendo on that.

Personally, I think the DS is a much better handheld gaming platform. But that's just me. The whole battery life thing helps out a lot, too. When they get some good games out, I'll buy one. Probably next Christmas.

  5. Re:I guess... on PSP Launch Coverage · · Score: 2, Insightful

Actually, as far as features go, the DS has the PSP beat. If you subtract extraneous "features" like the MP3 player and the ability to play movies on yet ANOTHER format, features that have nothing to do with gaming and will likely not see much use, all the PSP has going for it is its graphics. No one can deny that it is capable of better graphics than the DS, but then, the same was true of the Sega Gamegear vs. the original Gameboy, and we know how that turned out.

The DS can do a lot more than the PSP as far as unique features go. I just hope people realize that. And I hope that Nintendo can improve their game lineup for the DS in a hurry.

Baldur's Gate for Mac has had multiplayer for years. It was added as a patch shortly after release. The only reason it wasn't in the release is so that they could get it to gamers more quickly.

I don't really understand the opinion that "First Contact" somehow ruined the Borg. I think that the Borg came out of FC with much more depth than than before. The developments in FC gave them more menace, made them more terrifying than any episode of TNG ever did. As to what having a queen does to them: if it had been just the usual concept of a 'queen', a mother Borg who controls the collective and breeds new Borg, then yes, it would have been dissapointing.

What FC established, however, was quite different. As the Borg queen herself stated, she is the collective. She doesn't control the Borg mind, she is a physical manifestation of it, and not a singular one at that. She exists wherever the Borg exist; destroy her body, and the collective makes a new one. She can exist in many places simultaneously. Perhaps she represents an example of true evolution in the Borg: whereas before the Borg collective may not have needed a physical representative, perhaps their attempts to assimilate certain alpha quadrant cultures necessitated her existence. After all, that's why they attempted to assimilate Picard.

This is, of course, sheer speculation. But I don't think the existence of a queen does anything to lessen the impact of the Borg.

That's odd. I've always thought the the "Scouring of the Shire" was the perfect, most logical ending to the story. It gave each of the hobbits, as well as the reader, the chance to discover the ways in which they had changed over the course of their adventures, and allowed them to 'come into their own,' so to speak. It was an effective demonstration of the level of maturity that each one had achieved. It also served to show how war can affect even the places we once considered 'safe,' and gave the hobbits as a race a real part to play in the story. My favorite chapter, by far.

As a whole, that chapter served as the real payoff to the saga, much more so than the destruction of the ring, which was far from the true end of the story. My greatest regret for Jackson's movies is that this chapter was not, could not be included. Having the hobbits return home to everything just as it was when they left was very anticlimactic and quite dissapointing, though I understand why it was not there.

That's what happen when you do primary development of a game for consoles. The same thing happened to Deus Ex 2. It was but a pale shadow of its predecessor, largely for the same reasons: large, open levels broken into smaller 'zones', overly simplified gameplay, etc.

I hate that this is happening, but it seems to be an ongoing trend. I wish developers would just keep console franchises on consoles, and PC franchises on PCs. Either that, or develop them as PC games, then port them to consoles. It's a lot easier to 'scale down' and remove content and functionality than it is to 'scale up' and add them in.
