Have you noticed how both sides of the political spectrum exhibit this trait so eloquently? They both talk as if they have a mandate from God (pun intended) or that they invented the Truth (again, pun intended). Look closely and you may not like what you see.
I think that it has a lot to do with human nature. Also seems like it would fit well as an evolutionary trait to ward off cognitive dissonance.
It has been posted before but bears repeating. Treating the other side with respect and realizing that they may have a point will go a long way to tone that down.
Why unions in this case are a terrible idea
on
Should IT Unionize?
·
· Score: 1
Unions only make sense where there a LOT of workers doing very BASIC and undifferentiated work. If you can be replaced by just about any thing that can breathe than you might benefit from a union. In addition, only jobs that require physical presence in a specified location can be regulated this way, otherwise the least expensive option will almost always win.
Conspiracy theories aside that is actually a little know accepted practice in the political world. They all talk to each other and know each other. They may NOT do it on purpose but it is in a way a great "musical chairs" game. The only winners are the players, but the rest of us have to deal with the results.
I remember playing with Comic Chat (I think it was a client by Microsoft) on IRC back in 1998, 10 years ago. Anyway, it was fun for a few days and then it became annoying. Soooo... good luck with that google
And I have to tell you that it works separating kids by abilities. As long as as all classes have the same teachers for the same subjects and the classes are equally funded everything works. The smarter kids can finish the mandated curriculum faster and go beyond it. That way everyone stays in the same grade for the year but at the end everybody shares a base. In the end you can put on your diploma that you were in an advanced class. Sort of like College where you graduate "with honors" and what not.
Life is unfair and we are NOT all born equal. However it is still up to you to capitalize on your advantages. I have known quite a few smart people in my life who have done exactly NOTHING with their lives and I have know people of average to low intellect who have worked hard and persevered until they accomplished more than most of you even dream of. (Heck, look at Bush - not saying he worked hard but... well you get the idea).
Trying to "level" the playing field only takes from the better ones to give to the worse ones so that EVERYBODY gets to perform at the worse level or maybe a bit better. Not the wisest move.
Conclusion, it is not enough for the genes to favor you.
Posted and reasoned from the point of view of the employee. The point is to keep the company relatively safe from legal claims of all kind (internal and external). Part of it is to keep the company working in case something goes wrong (business continuity).
Most of these things are there to help mitigate risks so that the company can keep making money that will use to pay you for work you should be doing instead of wasting time on Slashdot:) Kinda like me
Clearly you do not understand the meaning of the word Balkanization
Otherwise your post makes sense from a historic and logical point of view. The difference is that most of the previous immigrants didn't get much for nothing like the current crop does. We support them with our taxes, they get the benefits but do not pay back into the system. We do need a better way to deal with their desires to be here.
OK, so your READ ONLY boot-up OS is owned... OMG, what are you going to DO?
I know, REBOOT! 5 seconds later you can browse again, just don't go back to that same site...
I say with Gmail and the Google apps I would only boot my computer to a full OS if I want to save something on fixed media or play a game.

Reading all these responses makes me think that all you can do is complain about this or that. What about, this is neat, maybe battery life will be longer, maybe I don't have to cry Noooo when I'm on a plane and my battery died.
Also I have noticed that just about everyone turned into some sort of activist. Discussions are mostly about *impact* on this or that, not that much on the technology. Also it seems that on every opportunity a political slant is added to every comment. I thought this was mostly a tech site... I must be wrong.
On that note, the huge impacts with food price changes and all that hinge on one HUGE assumption: mass adoption. Not to mention the time until this will actually be sold and OTHER inventions/technological advances made at the same time. Who knows, we may find a way to produce said sugars from OTHER sources... anyone think of THAT?

Are you serious? Capitalism never calls for the producer to dictate the cost that the 3rd party buys the product at... There is NOTHING in there that states that the shop owner cannot sell the goods at a loss (instead of a total loss by not selling at all). In other words, your statement makes NO SENSE.
That's all I really have to say.
Before you go boohoo for the ones plagued by communism all I have to say that there are examples of people that revolted and kicked them out. So there you have it.
If you talk about moving to another country 'cause your gov is corrupt/bad/mean/stupid you are talking the easy way out. Way to take the high moral ground when you actions speak so clearly.
That's your basis for calling the guy a crackpot?
His views are completely at odds with the mainstream scientific opinion," said Colin Wilson, a planetary physicist at England's Oxford University. -- AND? Other scientists have been against the mainstream and still ended up being right in the end. This quote proves nothing.
"And they contradict the extensive evidence presented in the most recent IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report.".... -- AND? Are you sure the conclusions were correct? See above.
Perhaps the biggest stumbling block in Abdussamatov's theory is his dismissal of the greenhouse effect, in which atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide help keep heat trapped near the planet's surface. -- That may be the only good point but even that seems questionable. Not to mention that the overall effect might not be as high as it is believed to be.
He claims that carbon dioxide has only a small influence on Earth's climate and virtually no influence on Mars. -- AND? Same as above. Nothing I read so far convinced me otherwise.
But "without the greenhouse effect there would be very little, if any, life on Earth, since our planet would pretty much be a big ball of ice," said Evan, of the University of Wisconsin. -- Yes, this is true, but how much of an effect is needed? How do you know that there is not a more complex system at work here. Blaming it all on the greenhouse effect seems irresponsible at best.
While the guy may be a crackpot your quotes did nothing to prove it. Why you got moded so high is beyond my understanding.
Personally I don't believe either side of the ones disputing this issue as the facts have been manipulated by both sides to work to their advantage. It really doesn't matter if in the end we are all going to cook or freeze in the end... or maybe even get hit by a comet before any of this has a chance to be that devastating.
Nobody said you need to run it that high. You can run that CPU with slightly higher FSB with a slitghly better cooler and get it at 3.6 GHz which is damn close to one of the $1,000 EE chips.
I'm off to buy a combo at Fry's for $150... can't beat that
This sounds all great and stuff... but if the engine scales down so well how about trying the same thing with cars? Is there an efficiency issue or maybe worse polution or is it just something that people always thought would be overkill? (In case you are wondering I was thinking about using the electricity produced to power the car rather than the thrust which is not that easy to control if I understand the principles correctly)
And the real purpose would be? Say the Earth is destroyed or afflicted by one of the things mentioned, then WHO is going to take advantage of that repository?
Say somehow some people survive. The next question is HOW are they going to use that to rebuild?
Interesting idea but I think just a *little* bit early for its time

Frankly I am dissapointed that something like that showed-up on Slashdot (makes it almost feel like the editors go by the idea that "if it's printed, then it MUST be true"...) How about some critical screening guys?
They say on there that this thing has "one gigabyte transfer speed". Does that mean that in a second's time you can read/write the whole disk?
Anyone thinking what I'm thinking? Hard drive replacement and now the the limiting factor is going to be the width of the data path from the drive to mem/cpu
That brings up the latency issue though... what is it? I could not find any info on there about that, or maybe I missed it.
Slashdot not withstanding.

The pub without beer -> a coffeehouse
