Yes, I know that these kind of things are available now. But come on, is the average Joe Sixpack user really going to be able to figure them out? Remember we're talking about the kind of people who just expect things to work without any effort. That means doubling clicking the file and have it put everything where it needs to go and have everything work. Until it's that seamless and easy, Linux is still going to look very daunting to the average person, if not to techincally knowledgeable users of other operating systems.

  2. Big Deterent on Groklaw Tries Their Own Linux Usability Study · · Score: 4, Insightful

One of the major things that deters a lot of people from using Linux is the difficulty of installing an application. One Windows it's just a matter of downloading one file and double clicking it.

On Linux, you've gotta download that one file and then find all of it's dependencies that aren't installed on your system and install them. Then install the dependencies of the dependency. It gets to be a pain in the ass.

RPM files were a step in the right direction but they still have their flaws. Until the application installation issue is solved, I have a feeling adoption will continue to be slow. And I'm talking about a universal solution, not something limited to one distro.

And don't give me any of that "kids should watch less TV as it's evil and is directly driven by and endorsed by the devil" crap. Kids love TV, most of the time it does them no harm and in fact a lot of kids learn valuable information from TV.

Nope, Minot AFB, Minot, ND. It's the same base that has control over half of the country's nukes. Up here they do have special civilian days every few months where they'll have an air show and they'll have some local bands play on open stages. They give tours of the aircraft, how certain things work, general Air Force knowledge. It's actually kind of neat to check out. I'm sure other bases have a lot of the same kind of things. They usually aren't announced to loudly public but they always have an ad in the newspaper or a radio spot.

Living in Minot, ND, home to half of the country's B-52 Stratofortress Bombers, I can tell you that there are very few things louder than those things. Before the latest war in Iraq, they would do quite a bit of their training runs at night, which oddly enough involved them using not only the Air Force Base runways, but the ones at our International Airport(small town, only 4 major flights a day). I live about half a mile from the airport and I can tell you there's nothing like waking up at 2am to the sound of B-52 slowly crawling over your house. It's really quite refreshing.

I'm not really all that familiar with all the laws regarding minors and property ownership.

I can say that on my car registration, it has my name only (I'm 16) and my parent's names are nowhere on the registration anywhere. In fact, I registered the vehicle myself, without any assistance needed from my parents. This is rather common in the area that I'm from (North Dakota), but does that mean that even though my name is on the registration and the title for the car, my parents legally own it?
