Actually, "Panting and sweating as you stand still in my corridors" would have been just as accurate.

Fun System Shock Fact : Shodan deliberately disabled as many elevators as she could, because she figured instead of hunting down the access codes in radioactive areas filled with Cyborg Death Nannies* and the zombies from Thief BUT FROM THE FUTURE, the fat basement dweller that was the only survivor of the digital apocalypse wrought upon Citadel Station would simply attempt to use the stairs instead and die of exhaustion before reaching the second floor.

I agree totally. Every game that comes out on the PS3 and Wii needs to have the option to control it with a normal controller.

Not everyone wants to play games with a remote control or swing their controller around for specific events, but we still want to actually play those games. I was thinking specifically of those two next gen consoles, but the DS is another great example.

You either end up with games that are simply less fun to play because of the fact that there is forced motion sensing (Lair, Excite Truck), or you get good games where the motion sensing crap feels like the obvious gimmick that it is (Folksoul, Ninja Gaiden Z).

"It's controlled purely with the normal controller, but when you want to suck the souls out of stuff, you yank the controller upwards". Awesome. Why not just let us pull the right analogue stick back as an alternative?

Sure, there are once in a blue moon games where the game needs the 'special' control system to work (Lost Magic, RE4Wii), but they really need to be the exception, and not the lazy rule.

Although, having said that, not labeling it Shadowrun would have meant it probably faded into obscurity (even) quicker than it already might be.

But at the end of the day, the next-gen Shadowrun game is an FPS, and shortly after the studio responsible closes down. Color me surprised. Even if it wasn't a true RPG, it could have been even an action RPG and it would have been better received.

I kinda didn't pay much attention when it was realised that it was going to be an FPS, but I think I vaguely remember that the devs or PR was quite indignant in the face of all the nerd rage.

"Look, the only point I tried to make was that the Sony guy was wrong to say that there was never a time when a single game would be critical to the success of the Playstation."

And what I'm telling you is that you are wrong. With regards to prior consoles, it's absolutely correct to suggest that The Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 never had a single game that was critical to their success. There simply wasn't. I'll admit that at launch it appeared as though this would be the case for Playstation3 though, although having said that I'm not even sure which game would have been the one that ensured the success of the console as nearly all of the launch titles sucked. Then again, they did for the Xbox360 as well, and now there are at least half a dozen must own titles.

Just because GTA3 was a popular game doesn't mean that the PS2 would have gone any worse had it not been a PS2 exclusive. It would have benefited the Xbox1 had it been a multiformat release, but the PS1 and PS2 have both had at least a dozen games that have been real system sellers, so that taking away any specific one would not have impacted greatly on sales.

Besides, logic would dictate that if you take away a single game exclusivity among a dozen titles, it's not affecting sales noticably as people are going to say, for example, "Well I can get GTA3 on PS2 and Xbox1, but I'll have to stick with the PS2 so I can play Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2. One PS2, please."

Also, just so you're aware, whether or not you actually like those games isn't related to this fact. I hate most of the PS2 system sellers (FFX, MGS2, GT3 for three quick examples of games I don't like) but it doesn't mean that I don't recognize them as big name games that will make purchase decisions for people.

Close to the only successful console in recorded history that lived or died by the success of a single game would have to be the Xbox1. Anyone that can't see that it would have really struggled had it not been for Halo is kidding themselves. Microsoft surely dodged a bullet with picking up the publishing and exclusivity rights to that title.

Oh, and I think the Jaguar sold the exact same number of copies as were sold of AvP. Also see : 3DO/Need for Speed. Although I did say 'successful' consoles.

I wish there was a way to remove the totally retarded aiming style from TS2 because I feel that would be an even better game without that moronic aiming. I don't know why it never bothered me much in Goldeneye, but I couldn't play much further than the helicopter in TS2 before just going crazy and returning it to the video store.

The issues you mention sound very much like Far Cry on console as well. New areas actions etc but it still felt like you were trying to console a mouse/kb driven game with a console controller. Awkward ...

Ports also work exactly the same in reverse when they go to PC. Massive reticules, auto-aiming and/or mouse smoothing that you can't turn off, the feeling that you're playing with your face pressed against the screen. Also the other thing I find that console FPS seem to totally lack the ability to make it actually feel like you're shooting something.

Project Snowblind is the best example that instantly comes to mind of all this. IIRC the PC version had no way of turning off the auto-aim, and successfully managed to incorpate all the above complaints. The final straw was after an hour or so of play the feeling that I was shooting mannequins got too much and I uninstalled it.

Condemned is a great console FPS as well, even if it is in a different style. The aiming acceleration is stupid but tolerable. I ended up getting it on PC anyway but regardless it was great, and a perfect way of how to actually do a console->PC FPS port. Except for the whole bit about leaving talk of the achievements in there.

Oh yeah, and if you want good AI, there F.E.A.R. is where you want to be. I never really bothered enough with Halo 2 to see if the A.I. was any improved over the non-existant first version. I played as far as becoming a bad guy and that was enough for me.
