    We still use the dvd service for this reason. In particular, we like their selection of documentaries and oddball foreign movies. Their dvd selection is better than their electronic selection.

    Not sure why this is considered off topic. If you look at the stories on this site the political/partisan stories get the most comments. There is clearly a higher participation rate for these kind of stories on this site. Some of us may wish this were just a tech site, but that is not the case.

    Not only that, but it is kind of shocking that other companies do not want to go to every rooftop and shout out how they are on par with Samsung with respect to battery safety.

    Why do they care what they do with the supposedly "free" gift that they give me. The only reason to do this is to assert their power over me and make me do what they want. WHen someone gives me something then it no longer belongs to them and is none of their business what I do with it.

    Cyclists not following the rules of the road are also a problem. I ride my bike to work, and it drives me nuts to see people riding irresponsibly. There are times when an accident occurs. and the fault is due to the actions of a cyclist or a pedestrian. There are also times when the fault is due to the person driving the car. Personal responsibility is something for everyone. When a driver or rider is at fault and kills someone then they should be held accountable.

    This is far too common in the US, and many people are killed by cars. This has less to do with pokemon and more to do with understanding the responsibility of piloting a large moving object with people around.

    Yes, the demands were exorbitant. The problem is that MS decided to immediately go to court rather than negotiate. Usually companies go back and forth and settle on a price. MS decided to short circuit that give and take and instead went straight to a court in Seattle. MS has never been one to compromise with anybody, and now all of a sudden when they have to negotiate with large companies they throw temper tantrums.

    The 1946 decision to let Europeans wander among nations has done wonders for Europe... maybe we should consider the same thing here in the US?

    I just want to share my agreement with this. If we promoted the idea of young people traveling around the United States then maybe we would not have these dumbass regional fights stalling our government. Although, the bigger issue seems to be generational, so maybe we should promote the idea of people transitioning between different generations?

    I think that you have it backwards. Monsanto's modus operendi is to sue the farmers who have the impertinence to steal this technology from them and allow it to grow on their land. Normally a farmer who allowed these seeds to land on his property would be taken to court and made to pay the fees associated with using the seeds and then not allowed to use the seed without paying the license fees. Damn nature and her propensity to reproduce.

    The article on Salon seems to be complaining about the evolution of that control. I'm not sure that the way it evolved should be so surprising:
    1. Geeks invent neet trick.
    2. Others pick up on it, and geeks love it.
    3. Business types notice and start horning in.
    4. Geeks make gazillions with infrastructure upgrades.
    5. Business types slowly kill the whole thing with greed.
    6. Geeks bemoan loss of control once the money runs out.
    7. Geeks invent new trick...
    The internet as a way to exchange "dangerous" ideas has been dead for a long time. The problem now is that the Ciscos and the JDS Uniphases are not putting out outrageous paychecks to geeks.

    You're right, the most important aspect of this story is that they have evidence that it is better to produce shade grown coffee because it increases the probability of cross pollination. The stuff about the "killer" bees is a bit bogus but the editors must think it will generate more exposure.

    On a semi-related note, here in the US more and more growers who are using green houses are turning to bumblebees as opposed to European honey bees. The North American bumble bees turn out to be much more aggressive pollinators than the honey bees.

    I tried very hard to stay away from the new Star Wars movie but finally couldn't stand it anymore. This new movie had some very enlightening facts about Naboo:
    • A matriarchial society.
    • The people in charge appear to be ageless, teenage sluts.
    • The women are willing to marry even homocidal egomaniacs.
    • The only competition seems to be a bunch of half-witted, very tall lizards.

    I for one am glad to see that we are getting closer to being able to reach out to these new and wonderful worlds.

    The calculators and programmers are advanced enough now that there are programs that can be downloaded that simulate a "reset". You can't assume that a calculator is erased anymore.

    The use of these calculators has really changed things. There are a lot of people who still refuse to acknowledge that they exist. If a calculator can do an integral and take a derivative then it forces us to ask what is really important about what we do in a classroom.

    There are a number of profs who still refuse to acknowledge that times have changed since Newton. If I were to write a test that someone could just read some formulas off of their calculator and then get a good grade, then that was a really bad test. Personally, I think some prof's are afraid of the calculators because it forces them to actually think about what they are doing.

    There will be no reason to send such a note. Everyone boarding the flight will have to click "I Agree" on the Airline EULA:
    Taking a flight in an airplane is an inherently dangerous activity. Before opening the envelope that contains the enclosed tickets and this license agreement you , the end user, must agree to the following conditions:
    1. You will not hold the airline nor the FAA responsible for any mishap.
    2. Even if the mishap is due to gross negligence on the part of anybody associated with the aviation community nobody is responsible for their actions.
    3. Any personal belongings that may be damaged or lost are your responsibility.
    4. You are too tired to read this far.
    5. We have the right to go through your stuff and sell it all to whoever is willing to pay us.
    6. We have the right to try on all of your clothes.
    7. In case of a horrible crash your only option is to reboot and start over with zero karma.
    8. We reserve the right to restart your flight at any time.
    9. In case we decide to cancel your flight, you are hosed.
    10. If you don't agree to these terms you can't fly but we keep your money.
    If you agree to these conditions then pass through the doors otherwise you go home. Thank you and have a good flight.

    Wow, that is a really sad comment on the state of computing in North America. The ability to use a gui based software package is considered a "skill." Thank goodness we can steal people from other parts of the world where they can learn that programming the damn machines can be fun.
