    After reading the Gang of Four book, I picked up "The Design Patterns Smalltalk Companion" (the book at Amazon). It explains how to apply each design pattern in Smalltalk.

    I found it invaluable to be able to see the same patterns discussed and implemented in a languate different than those I normally use. Each language has its own strengths, weaknesses, and best uses. The Smalltalk Companion helps you think about how your favorite language works.

    As I read this, that means that you or I (or the Samba team) will not get to see those APIs.

    Why? This is a US legal ruling, not business intelligence. The legal system is---at least in theory---separate from and not accountable to Wall Street.

    I wouldn't be surprised. There is a high correlation between ability in mathematics, programming, and music.

    I saw Thomas Dolby speak years ago. He talked about using computers to compose music. He had a Mac up on stage and "re-composed" one of his tunes in front of us. He commented that programming is a lot like music: periods of creativity and periods of rote work (practicing scales, writing code).

    Does this mean that Phillips may stop trying to coerce the RIAA into maintaining the CD standard when their patent runs out? If Phillips no longer holds a patent, what (monetary) incentive do they have in trying to force record companies to adhere to the CD standard instead of corrupting it with their wacky, hopeless "protection" schemes?

    Dominic's book, Practical File System Design with the Be File System, is wonderful. I'd never delved into the innards of a file system before. Reading his book was enjoyable and interesting. I learned quite a lot.

    Kurzweil synths come damn close to sounding like real pianos.

    It takes real skill to make any synth sould like the real thing, be it piano, organ, brass, strings, or anything else. You need to phrase and "breathe" like a real player.

    Heck, I used computers on stage starting around 1985. My trusty C64 (later a SX64, the luggable version) ran Song Producer, software published by Moog that managed a multi-synth MIDI setup. Later, I wrote my own live performance software for the C64 and Atari ST. I brough the Atari on stage "headless"; text messages were sent via System Exclusive messages to the display window on one of my synths.
