After reading the Gang of Four book, I picked up "The Design Patterns Smalltalk Companion" (the book at Amazon). It explains how to apply each design pattern in Smalltalk.
I found it invaluable to be able to see the same patterns discussed and implemented in a languate different than those I normally use. Each language has its own strengths, weaknesses, and best uses. The Smalltalk Companion helps you think about how your favorite language works.
Microsoft shall disclose to ISVs, IHVs, IAPs,
ICPs, and OEMs, for the sole purpose of interoperating with a Windows Operating
System Product, via the Microsoft Developer Network ("MSDN") or similar
mechanisms, the APIs and related Documentation that are used by Microsoft Middleware
As I read this, that means that you or I (or the Samba team) will not get to see those APIs.
...mightn't it have been polite to sit on this until the stock market closed, or at least until just before it closed?
Why? This is a US legal ruling, not business intelligence. The legal system is---at least in theory---separate from and not accountable to Wall Street.
The creator writes in What about hacking binaries? that "All code MUST be compiled on the user's machine, no binary distribution. If the user wants to hack herself then so be it."

I wouldn't be surprised. There is a high correlation between ability in mathematics, programming, and music.
I saw Thomas Dolby speak years ago. He talked about using computers to compose music. He had a Mac up on stage and "re-composed" one of his tunes in front of us. He commented that programming is a lot like music: periods of creativity and periods of rote work (practicing scales, writing code).
Does this mean that Phillips may stop trying to coerce the RIAA into maintaining the CD standard when their patent runs out? If Phillips no longer holds a patent, what (monetary) incentive do they have in trying to force record companies to adhere to the CD standard instead of corrupting it with their wacky, hopeless "protection" schemes?
Dominic Giampaolo (the author of the BeOS file system) has joined Apple. This tells me that not only is Apple serious about improving their OS, but that it's going to kick serious butt.
Dominic's book, Practical File System Design with the Be File System, is wonderful. I'd never delved into the innards of a file system before. Reading his book was enjoyable and interesting. I learned quite a lot.
Kurzweil synths come damn close to sounding like real pianos.
It takes real skill to make any synth sould like the real thing, be it piano, organ, brass, strings, or anything else. You need to phrase and "breathe" like a real player.
Heck, I used computers on stage starting around 1985. My trusty C64 (later a SX64, the luggable version) ran Song Producer, software published by Moog that managed a multi-synth MIDI setup. Later, I wrote my own live performance software for the C64 and Atari ST. I brough the Atari on stage "headless"; text messages were sent via System Exclusive messages to the display window on one of my synths.
I googled(tm) for "cperciva". I found a lot of links to your Slashdot posts and user page. Are you sure you want employers to see that?
In my case, the real Grail would be to solve:
1. No Karma
2. ???
3. Profit!

Connecticut's "No Call List" is accessible at http://www.state.ct.us/dcp/nocall.htm.
They don't have to. Bill Gates owns the Getty collection, doesn't he?
OK, I'll use Comanche instead.
I imagine it's hard to get rich as part of a non-profit. Therefore, starting one won't appeal to many business people or VCs.
Could Red Hat have made Linux as popular as they have if they were a non-profit?
Well, Emagic is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple. How long do you think it will be before Logic is available for OS X?

Sure, it does. Think of all those cereal boxes that are "sold by weight, not by volume."

...cover an area the size of Texas and New Mexico combined.
How many Rhode Islands is that?
...and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Hollywood.
Port "LAEE"? What does that stand for?
For embedding Ruby in Java, see JRuby (http://jruby.sourceforge.net).
I'm not going to respond to the "Python is better than Ruby" troll. Oops, I just did.

Go Dominic!
When I first loaded this article page, at the bottom I read, "69 beneath your current threshold". Good; that means I'm on top.
Ruby's "Principle of Least Surprise" means I never have to worry about premature ejaculation!
