  1. What if it wasn't the US? on America Versus the UFO Hacker · · Score: 1

Suppose he had hacked in to a Chinese system and the Chinese government wanted to try him as a spy, with a possible sentence of death. Are people more/less supportive of his deportation?

  2. Re:Bus lane on Pedestrian Follows Google Map, Gets Run Over, Sues · · Score: 1

We were leaving the train station, and both Google Maps and Tom Tom told us to turn left, which took us on to the bus lane. The buses-only sign is almost side-on for traffic leaving the station, which is why we didn't see it.

Amusingly (and annoyingly) the police officer who stopped us said there were two signs on the opposite building, a thick white line down the middle of the road, and the lane itself was marked. When I went back and took a photo to show that none of the signs/markings were actually there, the officer acknowledged that they didn't exist. But she said she was under orders to come and give everyone a ticket, so she had to do it.

  3. Bus lane on Pedestrian Follows Google Map, Gets Run Over, Sues · · Score: 1

Google Maps sent us along a poorly-marked bus lane in Glasgow a couple of months ago. Not that I entirely blame Google as we were also using Tom Tom sat nav and it told us to follow that route too. And, as I said, the lane was poorly marked. Fortunately there was a kind police officer waiting to give us a helpful fine. It's good that they're making an effort to punish ruthless criminals like myself.

Amusingly, on Google Street View, the Google camera car drives along the bus lane too.

  4. Re:No support from Google on Where Do You Go When Google Locks You Out? · · Score: 5, Interesting

A few months ago I needed to contact Google UK over an unpaid fee for their use of a photograph. Even though they have an office with staff, they have made every effort to be invisible and uncontactable. If you do get hold of the office number, and call it, you are given a myriad of options. If you work your way through each option, they _all_ ultimately tell you to go to the Google web site and send an e-mail. There is no possible way to get put through to a human in any department. Google do not like talking to people.

ps. To add to your comment about poor support for Android: There are several critical errors in Google's sample code provided to Android developers. The errors have been pointed out, and fixes supplied, by kind-hearted developers who wanted to help others. Yet it is apparently too much effort for Google to update the sample code, meaning that every new developer coming to Android must struggle with the same problems.

  5. Loyalty on Why Apple Is So Sticky · · Score: 1

Whitmore says: "the resulting customer loyalty is unparalleled"

For some Apple users it's loyalty, yes. For others, it's only loyalty in the sense of battered wife syndrome. Sure, they know they're in an abusive relationship and they should leave, but breaking the ties requires too great a shift of momentum.

I grew tired of Apple's behaviour so I switched to Android. It was easy for me because I never purchased any music or movies through iTunes, and I think I only ever paid for two apps so I didn't have any significant financial investment. People who have a substantial investment in iTunes-tied media or software will be exponentially less willing/able to move away from Apple. This is not loyalty.

  6. Tax on Porn Ban Being Considered In South Africa · · Score: 1

Why are they only talking about _digital_ porn? If it's an ethical issue, does the delivery method really matter?

But I would guess that a lot of the money from digital porn never gets within the taxman's grasp. Porn sold through the usual distribution channels can be more easily taxed.

So maybe the thinking is: Ban digital porn and porn will go back "above ground", where the taxman can get his hands on it.

  7. Facebook on Congressman Steps Up Pressure On Google, Facebook · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm sick of Facebook's attitude to privacy. Their settings page is designed to be confusing and time-consuming.

As far as I'm aware I have everything set to "friends only" and no apps or third-parties are allowed to see my data. Yet just this evening I went to a photo hosting site that I'd never been to before, and it prompted me to post a comment -- with me logged in using my Facebook account and my profile photo.

    It's maddening.

What struck me while WTFV (watching the f-ing video) is that the music from the Roland LAPC-1/MT-32 and Roland SCC 1 MIDI sounded best to me. From those two cards the music had a 'real' quality to it, as if it was being played by real people rather than a programmed sound card. Of course a lot of that can be credited to the musician(s) who wrote the music for those two cards, but I thought I'd share my observation anyway, moot as it may be :-)

Least impressive music, I'd say, was the modern score. I found it boring and lifeless.

I don't know why this has been modded troll because it's a valid point.

The reason why I wrote the review in the way that I did is because I've been using an iPhone for around 18 months and for the last year I've been looking for an alternative. So I wanted to write a review for people in the same situation -- people who are happy with the iPhone but not happy with Apple, so looking for an alternative phone.

This wasn't a review of the Desire. It was specifically a review of the Desire as an alternative to the iPhone.

Banks in the UK notoriously operate a catch-22 procedure:

If your account is allowed to go overdrawn:
    1. You are charged for processing of the debit that takes you overdrawn.
    2. You are then charged for being overdrawn.
This amounts to around £65 of charges for going overdrawn.

If you instruct the bank not to let your account go overdrawn:
    1. You are charged for the rejection of a debit that would have taken you overdrawn.
    2. You are charged again every time the debit request is repeated, which may be each day.
    3. Some banks also charge you for notifying you of each request being rejected, and don't allow you to opt out of these notifications.

Our banks have recently been under a lot of pressure to make their overdraft charges fairer. Here's the solution that some of them came up with:

    1. If you use an authorised overdraft, you are charged £1 per day.
    2. If you go over the authorised limit, you are charged £5 per day.

Work it out and you'll soon see that this is more damaging to customers and the banks are only getting richer.
