No. I don't think you understand. The _hardware_ will detect a video DVD. The _hardware_ will read the region code. The _hardware_ will determine if the region code is correct. If the region code is not correct the _hardware_ will not read the DVD.

    The software won't get anything.

  3. I don't think DVDidle will work on Vista Won't Play With Old DVD Drives · · Score: 1

The point is that DRM will be controlled at the hardware level. It won't matter what program you run because your hardware will refuse to read the DVD if the region code isn't what it's looking for.

This is on of the first steps where the entertainment industry is fucking with our hardware. Personally it pisses me off. Not because I want to watch Euro movies on my PC but because I don't think that the entertainment industry should be able to dictate that my hardware won't do whatever I tell it to do just to protect their profit margins. We all will be paying for the extra junk. And the only function of the extra junk we will be paying for is to limit what we can do with our own hardware.

Let's hope that NVIDIA will be kind enough to open source their old drivers. But not wanting to hold my breath I'm looking at going with a card from a different company that does have open source drivers.

The point of a standard is to allow multiple entities to develop software in a way that will be compatible with other developer's implementation of that standard. If you have too many standards then nothing is really standard.

It is a good idea to encourage competing products that use a common standard. It is NOT so good to encourage competing standards. Microsoft knows this full well. Like most of what Microsoft say and do they feel they can leverage some unfair advantage. Gee what could it be? The undocumented extensions that they plan maybe? Legal obstacles that block open source from implementing their standard?

With Microsoft's past record of dirty tricks we would be fools not to ask such questions.

The mistake that this guy made was to blatantly refer to RISK and to base his rules on that game. Risk was published a LONG time ago (more than 20 years) so I don't see how they could own any kind of patent on the game process but they must defend their trademark or risk losing it.

If I were this guy I would create a game with my own rules that used Google maps. Hasbro certainly does not have the right to stop the development of a new game that uses maps and military unit counters.

  17. This is how it works... on Computer Rebates Not As Sinister As You Think · · Score: 1

A lot of places contract out the rebate process. Various companies will make a bid and the lowest bidder gets the contract.

So let's say that I want to do the work of sending back rebates on a video card that Office Max sells. I figure out how many people will probably send in for a rebate, how much it will cost me in labor, postage and everything else. Then I add in a profit margin and submit my bid.

If I get the contract the company offering the rebate will pay me up front. The fewer people who I pay the rebate to the more profit I get. If too many people request rebates I could even lose money.

So if I'm unscrupulous I delay paying and maybe only pay off to people who take additional steps like complaining about not getting their money.

Not all "rebate companies" do this but it seems to me that a lot of them do.

"Two of the companies that Microsoft has been accused of destroying are Novell and WordPerfect. Yet much of the blame for the demise of these two companies goes to their management that did not know how to properly market their products nor deal with a competitor such as Microsoft. This is not meant to imply that Microsoft is blameless, rather that Novell and WordPerfect had plenty of opportunities to fend off Microsoft, yet did not rise to the challenge."

By "rise to the challenge" do you mean did not fight back with their own dirty tricks? How should they have better marketed their products? Microsoft found that the best way to market a product is to include a scaled back version in their monopoly operating system. Word Pad for instance once incorporated into Windows gets everyone started using a Microsoft document format. It makes products like Word Perfect less attractive and when the user out grows Word Pad what product do you think he will buy? Word Perfect or a product that uses the same document format in which he already has his documents saved?
