Wrong. The GPL is only interested in protecting the rights, and wishes of the authors of the code. The authors of GPL code wish for their code and derivatives to remain open and useable by users. This doesn't happen when a device like a tivo uses GPL code but then uses hardware that requires tivo's digital signature upon the software to run. If tivo didn't want to follow the GPL license they shouldn't have used the code. Simple as that. "Using this software on a device that does not allow the owner of the device to make changes to that software is a violation of this license." Then watch as the cost-per-unit goes up on embedded devices that now need to make their code memory accessible and swappable (or flashable). Is it now the job of others to help companies make money when not in their employ? The GPL is about making people play nice if they want to be on the playground, it's not complicated at all.

Though the quality of materials is not exactly great, nor are they assembled nicely. Also, I have noticed in recent years that the 'Double Cheeseburger' has gotten very greasy, indicating two things: possible raised fat content, and the restaurants do not keep the meat in a nice state after being cooked (sitting in a pool of grease). When I worked at McD's I made an effort to produce quality sandwiches, it didn't take much time to do a better job, after all, what else was I going to do while at work? - Though it appears others don't share my outlook on fast food jobs.

I basically gave up on the Apple section. I still read some of the conversations but posting if futile, the insanity of Apple users runs deep.

As for OpenBSD: I actually think it will last quite a while. It aims for things like correctness and security. That combined with occassional code audits keeps the code clean and useable. But more than that, OpenBSD is great for what they provide to others: library changes (no more using strcpy b.s.), Open* (SSH, BGPD etc). I really hope they try to make a good compiler too.

They may not be very useable for a desktop but that may change. They are probably the only notable OS that tries to not include 'Blobs', which keeps the system easily debuggable and allows for easier development. This will pay off in the long run.

Because if they weren't adding features no one cares about they would most likely have spent that time making (a) feature(s) everyone wanted that/(which) didn't make it into this release
This is what open source is all about, fixing the things that you want to fix. Unless you're in the position of working on code for your employer, in which case you do what they want as long as it doesn't side track you too often from the stuff you love.

Too often there's this mentality that users of open source products are owed something, and if they-the users-don't get what they want they will leave and use other products, and that can't happen now can it. But it can, the maintainers really don't care that much. A 'thank you' goes much farther than a 'work on something useful.' Because in all likely-hood these VAX patches took no time away from getting other work done: either the submitters only work on VAX or still had plenty of time to do other things.

Actually, it all depends on the workload. Some would say that Processes are a Unix hack, because they didn't think about threads. The classic Unix process, and what it is used to accomplish is different from a modern process on a decent language that scales higher than C.

At first i thought, wow, this should be modded informative, but then I thought about what you said. The ipod/itunes db thing is valid, but that has nothing to do with releasing an operating system that has been designed the right way or with security in mind. also: varying hardware has nothing at all to do with the attack mentioned in the article. In question here is a buffer overflow that has executed some code. This can happen on UNIX too, but what the overflow code did would not happen on an OS X system. If the overflow code setup an IRC server, and then tried to propogate itself onto other machines that could happen. But the windows box had other measures in place to make it so that the compromised system would stay compromised without any logging going on since this all occured on the SYSTEM account with a modified registry.
