Whats important to note here is that by keeping your data forever though (which the company has a right to do) they are also accepting the risk of losing that data and being sued. In other words its a liability to the company to keep your data forever, and you think that a company the size of GM (GM owns Direct TV) would be smarter than that.
I'm not sure how intelligent it is to publish the version numbers of all the packages you use anyhow. By publishing them someone can now easily look up the vunerabilities and attack. Its one thing to be on a old version, but its another to tell someone that you are.
I completely agree. You have to let kids know whats acceptable, and apply corrective action. Thats why I cut all the shielding off of the power cables.
We need to be careful not to offend Belgium as we could in fact lose the beer. After all look at that little tiff that lost us our Cuban cigars! Please save my Belgium Beer!
This is a risky move on their part. If you want an example of what can occur when a company does something like this, and then decides that it may not be as profitable as it hopes look no further than Steel Battalion: Line of Contact from Capcom. That game was only out for right about 1 year before they shut down the campaign servers. After that a large portion of the game became unplayable. I doubt the Command & Conquer franchise will die, but I would be willing to venture a guess that in a few years the game may no longer be playable once the company realizes they have no obligation to keep these servers up and running.
Thats true, but they should have to pay court costs and so forth which should help absorb some of the impact to the tax payers. The really amazing part is the two law firms that are going to make a decent amount suing each other while representing the same client.
My phone is actually quite dumb... it only does things for me when I specifically write code to have it do it... not only that but it seems like I have to tell it every little step.
When I bought my Wii I bought it knowing that the graphics would be bad, but the system was somewhat revolutionary due to the controller design. My question to you is why does the Wii need to be the only system with a innovative controller? Are you considering building an additional controller setup for the PS3 integrating those same (or similar) motion controlled features into your system? Granted this would be an added expense, but at least would offer the best of both worlds. And dont tell me the PS3 controller already has motion sensitivity; becuase, while it has motion sensitivity it can still not act like a pointing device.. which doesn't quite get it to the same level.
I heard the president actually tried anthrax once..., but he didnt inhale... or so he says... No wait that was Clinton...
(This was intended to be funny not serious, for the geeks out there with no humor)
The actual base idea behind the entire copyright issue is very simple. Although the article does a good job describing it sometimes simple is better. Man since the beginning has always understood property to be tangible. For instance the caveman who has a club can protect his club from theft (usually by using it). However what about the neanderthal(sp?) who invented fire. Assuming he could speak do you think he would have said "Sorry about this guys, but I figured out this whole fire thing.. So I'll tell you what you can make fire off of my fires, but I want 2 shiny beads in return." What do you think they would do... See above reference of caveman with club. Point is "You can't protect a idea". In the end the statement is true one way or another...
Speaking of Walmart employees...
I had one go ape shit on me. I asked him "Sir where are your 64 meg MMC's?" He then asked "Whats a MMC?" So I pulled one out and showed him... He said oh there over there... So I walk over there and there is a locked case with MMC's. Well since its locked I go back to him, and say "Umm sorry to bother you, but the case appears to be locked. Could you open it for me or tell me who can" He said "I can open it". THEN WALKED OVER TO THE PLEXIGLASS CASE PICKED IT UP, AND SLAMMED IT ON THE GROUND. REACHED DOWN PICKED UP MY MMC, and then calmly said "now its open" through down his smock, and walked off:-). Im assuming he quit/got fired.. my guess is he will end up in a Post office.
BTW I looked and it appears that not all, but most are indeed with a DVD ROM by default. Only the cheap ones appear to have CD's. *shrug* I build all my own stuff anyhow.
In the article it stated that HP said it would require to many CD's to get it to the customer. Now let me make some assumptions.
1. I Imagine almost all of the HPS come with a DVD Rom. I don't know if this is true, but considering the cost of CDR/DVD-ROM the price is almsot identical from a sales issue,a nd its a selling point.
So on that assumption... Why not put it on 1 DVD-ROM?
Just an idea.. Im going to go check HP out and see if DVD is standard.. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong
Thats actually true the effect can be very diffrent. However violent video games for instance ar very rarely using pictures of actual people. Usually they are animated etc, and more than often not liflike. It really depends on the child, but the theory above has taken root somewhat in the psychology field. Of course there are those of your opinion as well. Its almost as bad of an argument as "Does God exist?" little facts, but and abundance of opinion.
To me this of little concern considering im not a minor by a long ways... However I do remember back when I was a minor, and I really dont understand why they are doing this. I understand that there is a "de-sensitizing" to violence that goes on from games like this but there is a positive (yes positive) influence that occurs as well. Humans are creatures of stress and tension naturally, and in many of us there is still a urge to cause violence. To deny that urge is to cause problems. Video games violent movies etc help to satisfy that in some people... Granted in some it only increases it, but this seems to be a more profound thing in youth inperticular.
This is great... Does anyone remeber the/. Article where they were reading the Linux kernel code out over a public stream:-).... Well I can see it now.. the 3 year broadcast of the Windows Source Code... Not just that, but just like Decss we can publish some of the code on shirts, and eh... er.... well maybe not.. Hmm I wonder if it will be on the court transcript...
Sounds to me like when he showed up in New york, and just happened to be at the time the president was coming through, and jsut by chance his web site has a death threat against the president that they just wanted to get him out of the way for a while. They don't have a lot of solid evidence that they can "legally use" sounds like some issues of illegal search and seizure on the car part is here, and they didnt arrest him in a "timely" fashion on the items they did find. Im willing to bet the SS pushed him to the side while the president was stopping by with this little charge (which will get dropped). But don't mistake me he is guilty as can be. Of that I have no doubt, but it looks like someone forgot the rules (USA gov)
What is there to tell or instruct users on when using a Tandy 1000...
I mean how useful is a user group for that? Not just that, but why is my biggest question.
I have several older machines I keep lying around, and I always find a way to put them to work to do something... (even something as simple as calculating pi). So why not make a non-bloated installation for my older machines sounds like a good idea... After all no one seems to be offering "minimal" installations straight out of the box anymore:-P
I write for several sites... Ive wrote reviews before on hardware like this, but that is all. For instance I had a review of Firewire vs. USB 2.0 spec at one point, and it wasn't released yet. However all my data was based on the FAQ's and tech data provided for both technologies. I don't know how that compares, but it may help to show this prcatice is very common. After all how many times have youo watched election results, and seen them tell you who won (a guess) before that person ever won the election? Happens a lot.

Why not hire an engineer to design it? Give someone in the U.S. a job we need them right now.

Everyone should keep in mind that "evil" is a subjective open ended term. What is evil to one group is not evil to another.
Yeah real good... so much for watching that.

Agreed Im the same way... give me a book any day over TV. I noticed the same thing when I stopped watching it
