I completely agree, but I am afraid that one of the technically challenged, money grabbing CEO's might reduce funding for Mozilla to a trickle seeing that they have a license on IE for the next 7 years. I do realize that it will not die, far from that, but mainstream use might dwindle if netscape disappears. Most people who use Netscape browser don't even know its Mozilla, or that Mozilla exists. Lets hope this will not happen.

  4. M$ has won, and we lost, here is why... on Microsoft to Pay AOL $750M in Settlement · · Score: 1

If you read the article on News.com, it becomes painfully clear who won. M$ does have to pay 750 million, but look what it gets out of it. AOL will now definitely use IE in AOL for the next 7 years, effectively blocking their only 'major' browser competitor, Mozilla. M$ gets to put DRM Media 9 into all those AOL users machines, they get more control. What M$ is getting here is a big market to distribute their software to. I am sure they are happy with this since they are trying to push DRM onto everyone, and what better way to do it then to put it in new windows and get the rest with AOL? Well, this is another example how a company with enough money, and even a monopolistic record, can not just buy its way out, but also to increase its power.

Have fun with the world of DRM, where only you, M$ and the government can read your private email. (***I stole this one.)

It gives us a bad name. With the letter SCO sent, they might scare some companies away from OSS/FS for good. SCO cant beat GNU/Linux in a direct competiion, so they are fighting durty. Unfortunatelly even if they loose the lawsuit, this will still leave a mark on OSS/FS community.

I keep hearing about this "Dawn of the PC era", but the simple truth still stands. Handheld devices are great at a few simple tasks, calendaring, scheduling and other everyday/office tasks. They are also very good at communication, but they suck as a platform. The advantage the PC has is its multi-purpose orientation. It is possible to do virtually anything with a PC. The functions that a PC can do can be completely different from each other, unlike handheld devices which have very narrow use/ability. (Also, for handhelds to be truly functional, more needs to be displayed to the user, and that is hard with small screens.) Until the handheld platform becomes as diverse as the PC platform, the sun will shine in this era.

I just started with linux about a month ago. (Actually this is my second attempt. My first attempt failed when some black magic, aka X configuration exploded in my face with RH5 some years back...) So after reading up on the distros I picked RH8. I installed it, recompiled the kernel, configured x, got most drivers to work and almost customized my system. (apt-get is great, and I'd like to see that in RH natively) But now, new version! And I start hearing about binary incompatibility and such. I am a programmer with a CS degree, but when I hear that, and being a beginner in linux/unix, I become very uncomfortable. I am now seriously thinking if I want to upgrade to RH9 or if I should move to another distro. I don't want to have an antiquated system, and I don't want to spend what little free time I have rebuilding a system which will be old in another two month. I wander why it is necessary to rebuild a system which is so modular. Why not have an update service which will do that without a new version. (many small updates VS few huge updates)

Can anyone suggest something, a word of caution or a guiding light? ( or a distro :) )

I hope this will not be my second failed attempt at linux.
