Well, I'm not a layer (and certainly not in american or danish law) but it seems to me that a little more proof that they actually did scan his site before would be nessecary. Afterall, If the danish claim that they put him on the list because of his moronic pieces in an online magazine, and that they don't want to risk getting a mail from him, there's not much case left.. And logfiles can easily be adjusted.. so in my humble opinion there's not much left..
Yes, I have that right. Maybe one can make a case out of not informing the users, but... It's my machine and I do what I want. If I'm an ISP I still have that right. If my users don't like that they can find an other ISP or try to convince me that I'm wrong. NOBODY can force me to accept your mail.. It's that freedom of press/owner of the machine thing.. Shout al you want, but you can't force me to listen and such..
I do see a few problems with the story as written.
If it's so easy for the danish people to forge an acceptable identity, it's as easy for everybody else. Including spammers. If his domain is the only domain who should be allowed to use the mailserver, lock it on an ip-range.
If I want to make a personal list of domains from who I refuse to accept mail that's my good right. You can shout all you want, but I don't have to listen. If others like a copy of my list because they trust my judgement in this case, that's between them and me. Again, nobody can force me to accept mail.
As for the trespassing, he asked the danish site to re-check his mailserver. If I ask a cop to check my doors and windows, and he finds a way to get in. Can I sue him for burgelary? Or call it unfair because they used a method I didn't anticipate?
Anyhow, IMHO this is an other blabla piece from someone who doesn't realy has an understanding of what he's doing.. Typical american sollution.. let's sue..
yeah, and a tetris for those who haven't decided yet and still need some time.. or quake! There are some possibilities.. with skins from the politicians.. "Humpz.. that bush guy fights like a wimpy girl.. He's not gona get my vote!" And of course a random-choise button for those who realy don't know or care.. Hmm.. Maybe a link with a casino..if you're the thirt in a row to cast the same vote you win! The possibilities of getting people actualy to vote!
mail, hot seat, direct connection, modem, local ipx net.. for years the options before "everybody" got internet.. Mail and hot seat aren't very usefull in this case, but a null-modem would still do..
On of those metal suitcases with foam on the inside? A notebook bag with some extra foam, basicly foam to protect and something around it to keep everything in place.. A piece of plastic of the same size as the screen (with some foam..) and some velcro to keep it in place? just some ideas..
I doubt and disagree. The possitive site of OS is that the moment a patch is available everybody CAN get it and usualy it doesn't take that much longer before patched version start showing up on freshrpm and the like.
Windows update on the other site makes updating easy, but then again with tens of megabyte big fixpacks which have to be downloaden with reboots in between doesn't make things easier either. If the update doesn't break the machine more than the problems it fixed to start with. Not to mention all those windows machines without network or just a modem for which this option is completely useless. And then one day they go online...
Besides, considering I still get a few hunders nimda and code red attempts a day on my servers, having an update service may help in absolute numbers, but in relative numbers I'm not so sure.
Of course when linux gets more mainstream it will run into these problems too. most people are just a little lazy.
The moment the robot asks for a hamburger, hookes up to the net and orders a ticket for the next flight wherever they are getting somewhere with AI and simulated evolution..
While I'm sure there will be problems to solve, the idea of having a standard and the world to adher to it is hardly new. Maybe for computers this is as novell as being responsible for your own bugs, but for the rest of the world it's bussiness as usual. Everybody finds it not more than normal that they can buy any brand of phone and use it just by plugging in and while there are different fittings for things like lamps, they are well defined every company who wants to can start producing them. (hmm.. not sure about patents there though..)
Closer at home, the internet is working because of protocols which were developed on goverment money (arpa).
While I'm sure things will not change overnight, I'm optimistic on success in the end.
of course not.. But imagine the discussion when they actualy made a choise for xxx-linux.. Freedos is one of a kind. With linux there are way to many ego's who would start whining about the "wrong" distro being chosen.
I didn't say they have to develop it, just that it has to be open and free. For all I care they choose the latest MS-Word DOC version, as long as I can download a file with the complete description of the format and am free to implement it without royalties or restrictions. (Not that I think DOC files are the way to go, but that's an other point of discussion.)
While I personaly like and use open source I don't have the illusion that this goes for everybody. What I would like the goverments to do is to define open fileformats/protocols and only accept/buy software which supports these formats 100%.
Ofcourse this also means that ALL govermental communication should use these formats and nothing else. This may not be the end of closed source, but at least it levels the playing field and should brings competition back where it belongs: comparing price and quality.
> However, the need for user friendliness isn't there with servers.
This, of course, is not true. Servers also have to be maintained by mortals. Userfriendliness is always needed. BUT: servers are supposed to have an other kind of user though and as result an other kind of friendliness. Basicly, server admins are supposed to have a clue and a well documented text config file is a wonder of friendliness as far as I'm concerned. I can use search, search and replace, spellcheckers, grep, etc. etc.
I'm reasonably sure that the "naturally endowed" part is an urban legent. That certain groups of people are more attracted to certains sports has imho more to do with the social status and background. One ball keeps 22 poor children sporting. Results? Lots of very good soccer players with a poor background. Africans, south-americans etc. Same goes for running I guess. all you need is time and a piece of road.
As for what's wrong with people today, it's more that stereotyping is a international sport. Blacks are good athleets, muslims are terrorists etc. etc. Luckily the world isn't that black and white..
Not? Believing in a great afterlife isn't THAT much different from believing that the next version will be great, save and will make you more productive..
The moment you install a windows machine with the network the could do that already anyhow..
On the other side, I can imagine the little LCD screen saying "Packet recieved, please reboot to continue."
And once in a while a LCD-Gray screen of death..
(hmm.. or where the routers the ones with the blinking leds.. oh well.. they can do "please reboot in morse")

But then again, all the other (religiouse) nuts europe wanted to get rit of went to america.. explains a few things too..;-)
(ok, now, where are my asbest undies...)

Nah, the internet interface module. Pr0n sites will pop up like flies on the honey..

They don't have to define a standard. As it goes with standards: There are enough to choose from.
Just make that choice, make it free, open and obligatory for govermental work.
I didn't say they have to develop it, just that it has to be open and free. my IIS is also in the serverroom, on a CD which makes sure the table stays stable and horizontal..
:-)
Sorry, couldn't resist..
