Hmmm, are you being sarcastic? Money and principles are diametrically opposite so your analogy is quite poor.

Since when are money and principles opposite? They aren't even mutually exclusive, an entity can have both or neither. They're completely orthogonal concepts.

That said, it is the principle which is important in this case, money being only tangentially relevant (i.e. Castle is selling the code, but it's the distribution itself and not its motivation which is important).

Gee, a knee-jerk reaction when I wasn't even trying... maybe I should take up trolling as a hobby. I never said a mumblin' word about Republicans, Democrats or any other political party being any better or worse than any other.

The fact is, the current Bush administration is quite a bit more obvious in its cronyism than most, simply because we've actually seen most of the faces before; usually it's an unfamiliar set of cronies that comes in with a new President.

I find that amusing, that's all. This administration isn't filling me with a lot of joy in other respects, so please don't begrudge me that. Oh, and wash your mouth out with soap, preferably lye.

  17. Wetware backup on 11 Digit Dialing Comes Home to New York · · Score: 1
Lightning struck my phone a while back, and I lost all those numbers I'd laboriously entered into it.

Lo and behold, though, the most important ones were still accessible in wetware. I sat with the new phone and pretended I was dialing my friends and family, and even though I couldn't consciously remember most of their numbers, my fingers danced them right out without hesitation (as long as I didn't think about what I was doing).

The experience made another point on me too; there were a lot of numbers I'd stored that really weren't important to me at all. I've pretty much stopped using the redial capability now except as a handy reference.

This gives me a nice triage system. If your number isn't important enough for me to recall directly you aren't a family member or close friend. If you're a casual friend or new in my life it might be in my "probationary" number store on the phone & Zaurus because I haven't learned it yet.

Otherwise you're a stranger. I'll look it up; if it's unlisted and not important enough to me to memorize it, I probably didn't want to talk to you anyway.

The RIAA and the MPAA may be pulling a King Canute act (look it up) but the typical /. poster sure smells like someone who just wants free music. So much for the moral high ground.

Making sweeping statements about the average slashdotter and using your generalization to judge on their morality makes as much sense as assuming broadband users are a bunch of 'pirates' and using your generalization to charge them money.

I have never, repeat never, downloaded any mp3 that wasn't clearly licensed by the artist allowing me to do so. The RIAA is charging me, with every blank CD-R I buy, for acts of copyright infringement I have never committed, and are now suggesting a scheme which if it passed would likely have me pay a monthly maintenance fee for those same acts which I have never committed.

Hell YES I have the moral high ground!

  20. Taxes are better than votes on U.S. Pushing Conservative Science · · Score: 2
Given most American's opinions of how well their tax dollars are spent, it would lead to a record low turnout :-)

I'd like to see more immediate control over my taxes. You know that box that lets you decide whether $3 goes to federal matching funds? Let's extend that concept. After I've worked out how much tax I owe, let me designate exactly where it goes, i.e. what percentage of it goes to defense, what percentage to welfare programs, and so on.

Yes, I know there'd be problems with that; maybe it couldn't be left entirely up to me. If a significant part of my taxes could be directly allocated by me, though, that would be empowering me in a way almost as significant as the ballot itself.

They needn't fill out a ballot; they could show up, stand in the box for a minute, then leave.
A None Of The Above slot on the ballot would be good too, and runoffs could be forced if the NOTA slot one (diluting if not eliminating the "they're all crooks anyway" excuse).

I like the idea of making this minimum effort a requirement for receiving certain government services. I'd even take it a step further; if the amount of money for roads, etc. were tied to levels of voter participation in a given district, you'd really start seeing some social pressure on people to participate in the process.
