Q: What is the difference between balanced and unbalanced?

A: Most professional audio devices are connected via balanced cables to minimize pickup of stray electrical noise. Consumer audio devices use unbalanced cables and are very prone to picking up noise, especially at low signal levels from devices such as microphones. Balanced circuits have an inherent ability to only pass audio signals and reject unwanted noise. Balanced refers to the fact that there are two symmetrical signal lines and one ground, while unbalanced uses just one signal line in reference to ground. Normally, XLR connectors are used in most balanced devices while unbalanced consumer gear normally use mini-plug connectors.

Q: What is the difference between MIC and LINE level?

A: Level refers to the relative strength of the signal and is measured in decibels. LINE level sources are much-amplified signals over MIC (microphone) level signals. Line level is usually between -10 to +4 dbm in strength while MIC levels are normally -60 dbm.

Q: What is meant by "low impedance"?

A: Impedance is an electrical term that refers to how much a device impedes the flow of current and is measured in ohms. While there is no set standard, low impedance usually refers to a range of between 150 and 800 ohms. Most professional audio microphones are low impedance. The adapters are designed to work with any low to medium impedance source.

Q: How do the adapters work?

A: Each input signal is sent to a LINE/MIC switch to allow you to set the proper level, then to a volume control to adjust attenuation. The balanced input signal is then converted to an unbalanced output through an impedance matching transformer. Finally, the output signal is sent through an attached shielded cable terminating in a stereo mini-plug that connects to your camcorder's microphone jack.

Q: Do I need to use any batteries with the adapters?

A: Our adapters are passive devices that do not require any external power.

Q: What devices can I connect to the adapters?

A: Any dynamic or self-powering condenser microphones and wireless receivers can be connected directly to the adapter. Condenser microphones requiring phantom power will need an outboard power box connected between the microphone and adapter. Any line level source from CD players, VCR's, audio mixers, etc. can also be connected to the adapter with the use of the built-in attenuator switch.

Q: What is the difference between the DXA-4, DXA-4S and DXA-4P?

A: The adapters are identical except for the internal grounding configuration and the position of the mounting screw. The DXA-4 is designed for optimum fit on the Sony VX1000 and VX2000 camcorders, the DXA-4S on the Sony TRV900, and the DXA-4P on the Canon GL1.

Q: How is the device grounded?

A: Properly grounding all equipment is important to ensure noise free operation. All of our adapters use the most effective grounding system to be compatible with the camcorders they were designed to be used with. Sony camcorders use a floating ground on the MIC connector that may cause some problems when attaching external audio devices to this input. Our new DXA-4S adapter has a special feature to ground itself to the chassis of the popular Sony TRV900 camcorder to establish a "true" ground for noise free recording. When using our DXA-4S on other Sony TRV camcorders including the PD100, we recommended that you ground the adapter to the camera chassis using a simple wire clipped between the camera strap bracket and any shiny surface of the adapter. This is the best way of establishing a common ground which is important when attaching other devices to the camera such as mixers or monitors which may also be grounded. Following proper grounding procedures ensures the best possible audio in every situation.

  4. Chevy Van Song on 1770 Mechanical Chess Player Inspired Babbage · · Score: -1

Do you know the "Chevy Van" song? When I ask people about it, most people think I'm talking about that wanky Bob Seger song that comes on Suburban commercials.

To which I must reply, fuck no, dude! I'm talkin' about a Mellow Favorite of the Seventies that's so smooth it makes my balls ache for a simpler time. Allow me to expound on the matter at length:

Many years ago, there was a time called the Seventies (this is when I was born, as a matter of fact). Things were different then. For example, you could write a song about picking up a hot young hitchhiker, banging her, and dropping her off in her one-horse town-and it would be a HUGE HIT. Think of it this way: when you were at the mall in the Seventies, or at your high school dance, or whatever, instead of "Bye, bye, bye" or "Believe" by Cher playing everywhere, it was the Chevy Van song.

Oh my god, I just cannot restrain myself. Here are the fucking lyrics:

    Chevy Van by Sammy Johns.

Gave a girl a ride in my wagon

She crawled in and took control

She was tired as her mind was a draggin'

I said "Get some sleep and dream of rock and roll"

Cause like a picture she was layin there
    Moonlight dancin off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy Van and that's all right with me

Her young face was like that of an angel

Her long legs were tan and brown

Better keep your eyes on the road son

    Better slow this vehicle down

Cause like a picture she was layin there
    Moonlight dancin off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love in my Chevy Van and that's all right with me

I put her out in a town that was so small

You could throw a rock from end to end

Dirt road main street, she walked off in bare feet

    It's a shame I won't be passing through again

Cause like a picture she was layin there
    Moonlight dancin off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
She's gonna love me in my Chevy Van and that's all right with me

Beautiful, right? I mean, let's think about the actual events that inspired this wonderful work of art.

THE SCENE: A dusty interstate. THE YEAR: 1975. HOT YOUNG HITCHHIKER squints at the sun while a powder blue Chevy Van rolls up. CHEVY VAN MAN sticks head out of window.

CHEVY VAN MAN: Say, where ya headed sweet thing?

HOT YOUNG HITCHHIKER: Up round Mendocino county, can I come in?

HOT YOUNG HITCHHIKER begins to approach the vehicle.

CHEVY VAN MAN: Whoa whoa whoa! Listen babe, I gotta tell you about my ass, gas, or grass policy. And just between you, I wouldn't mind a little ass.

HOT YOUNG HITCHHIKER: Well, all right, pull over to the next rest stop and we'll fuck.

CHEVY VAN MAN: That's all right with me!

SIGH. What sort of world was the Seventies, where unwashed men roamed freely in their Chevy Vans, replete with orange shag carpeting, Sparkomatic 8 track players, and "If this Van's A-Rockin, Don't Come A-Knockin'" bumper stickers?

Ask Slashdot: deploying Linux in a business environment? Posted by Hemos on Monday April 22, @11:48PM

    from the justifying-my-unhealthy-fixation dept.

An Anonymous Coward writes "I have a job where I'm real important and I get to take care of 2 NT servers, a bunch of workstations, and an AIX box that runs our database. My boss aksed me about the possibility of upgrading the other day. I told him that we should go with Linux because it's free, and you can write scripts and stuff. Also Ihave it running on all my 386 boxen at home. Has anyone ever used Linux in a business environment before? Update: Slashdot appears fourth when you type in 'Linux' on google.
