When the state seeks to monitor all individuals all of the time
Funny, but most of the surveillance I see in the US seems to be Bandanna Republic trying to keep 16 year old girls from stealing tank tops and the rest is dedicated to keeping soccer moms from running red lights.
Maybe someone who just lost a friend to the Taliban might not really be in the mood for seeing a game where they can re-enact killing their friend.
Perhaps my father was killed by VC, does that mean that nobody should make historically accurate Vietnam games? What if my grandfather was killed by a German, does that put ww2 games in bad taste?
Sure the time scale is greater, but its just being fucking 'PC stupid' to go to lengths like this. I think if I was killed in Afghanistan, I would be pissed off by politically correct assholes who want to sweep everything under a rug, 'out of respect for the survivors'.
What the HELL is wrong with a factually depicted game? Telling an accurate story is very respectful of those who served.
The internet lets you break down all the previous things that held countries in conflict, language, culture,
...provided they speak English and love jeebus.
I think language segments the Internet more than you imagine. Sure, those who can speak English can have access to a much larger world, but there are a lot of people who don't. And i don't see record numbers of Americans and Europeans trying to learn say, Arabic.
There would be no fight. Han Solo wasn't the sort to play fair if it meant he wouldn't win. Also, there is no moral or financial incentive to shooting up the federation.
The better question is who would win in a fight, Han Solo or Malcolm Reynolds...
So, just because you don't think it is important, it shouldn't be bothered with? There are plenty of apps that are probably sensitive to having proper time keeping. Take GPS systems for example. Losing a few seconds could have a profound effect on all the devices that use data transmitted by the the satellites. Just because some Oracle idiots can't write a system that consumes UTC time correctly is no reason to hobble the rest of the world.
Your problem is that you seem to view each of Microsoft and open source as monolithic united entities with a single mind and vision.
Well put. Moreover, with time, more and more of these fresh out of college kids that have had some exposure to *nix will get hired by MS, and more hysterical old school twits like Balmer will retire. Over time, MS will cozy up to *nix as more people that work there understand what open source is all about.
...so explain to me how #1 will solve the problem of say, India. Oh sure, #1 will keep you safe for awhile in the lightly populated, heavily armed western united states, but what about the rest of the world? You got enough bullets to stop the other 6 billion people on the planet?
Zombies are the new vampires, and to date none of them sparkle in the sun.
Want to know why zombies are so cool? Because Hollywood will never be able to get 14 year old girls interested in crappy zombie romance/emo books and movies....
You don't even have to be that pernicious-- just ask the professor how many points you'd have to lose to get a sure B or C, and then ensure you get a B or C.
Pretty sure you are wagering against "B or better" and not "B- to B+", otherwise someone with good grades could wager heavily against getting and F get good odds and 'take a dive' for a huge payout.
Still, profs are human too, and can be bribed like anyone else. I would guess that you are wagering against you total GPA though.
I bet you could get some super cheap cooling just by puttering up into the arctic ocean and opening a few windows. Solves one data center issue at the cost of others.
I wonder though if anyone has thought of building land based data centers in the far northern climates to take advantage of the -40 degree arctic cold fronts.
I used to joke with a friend who wanted to do a tour in one of the antarctic research stations that he could leave a overclocked computer sitting outside his bedroom window, and the only problem he would have is penguins trying to lay eggs in it.
Several years ago I did a stint as a security guard. One of the things they taught us is that you never let anybody take your badge/ID card from you so that they can inspect it. They may look, but they may not handle.
Yeah, this is critical. It turns out that the gold paint on the security guard badges chips off really easy, exposing the white plastic underneath. When that happens, someone from HR has to go down to the gumball machine in the lobby and feed it quarters until another badge comes out. And that waste several dollars in quarters...
I think you have the right idea, but you aren't making the curriculum offensive enough:
I advocate the teaching of infernal Design. Everything is identical to intelligent design, word for word, except that the creator is Satan as described in the Bible. Any argument that the religious nut jobs can make for teaching this theory, I can use. Should they get intelligent design taught in schools, I could pretty much get infernal design equal classroom time, since it is identical save for who the creator is, and I am pretty sure that the idea of legally forcing satanism to get equal classroom time with Christianity will cause them to abandon their efforts.
ISPs are providing a service. They have EVERY RIGHT IN THE WORLD to regulate what's passing through their networks, because it's their network.
...Really? Then why if I own, say, a restaurant do I need to let minorities eat in my restaurant? I mean, its mine, right? Why should I let the government tell me that I have to serve Blacks and Asians?
...is one interpretation. Another is that because they are way behind the us in terms of tech, both deployed and under development, they are trying to make up quality with quantity. And they are arming like mad, because they are way behind in the race.
My entry: Master of Magic, by Microprose software (currently rights are held by Atari, I think). c1994-ish? Showed page turning animations in a spell book when you clicked on next and prior pages, creating a virtual book. Sounds like what MS is trying to do here, so it might count.
Can anyone beat 1994? There must be earlier stuff than that..
More to the point, sooner or later when the cost of litigation is greater than the cost of a hit squad someone will make the simple economic decision to follow the path of least resistance.
Most people that want to post on Elitist Jerks are fairly well behaved and well informed people to begin with (Why else would they visit the EJ forum in the first place?)
...because EJ aggressively bans anyone who acts like an idiot. Go check out their 'banhammer' section for copious examples. EJ realizes that 90% of their users really appreciate that 10% of the users aren't worth having around. There are a lot of idiots that visit EJ, they just dont stay long.
It's well known that a pseudonym enables people to be complete assholes. Complete.
Really? Then Ban them. Blizard knows what account name is attached to a forum post. problem solved.
And I'd bet that the moderators of these forums were sick and tired of seeing cases where this happened.
Ban. Ban. Ban. Delete Account if needed. I don't really see a problem here.
Also, it isn't having a pseudonym that causes people to be assholes. Its the larger disconnected nature of the internet. Even if I call you a bastard, and you know my real name, how will that hurt me if you live in Florida and I live in California? Chances are, we will never meet, or interact in any way outside that forum.
The only thing this real name policy would do, would be to insure that Blizard got sued when some unhinged nut went and murdered someone else because they were called a 'hamdoctor' on Blizard's forums. And I will wager hard cash with anyone who thinks otherwise, because there are just enough loons playing WoW.

Help, help! I'm bein' oppressed!
whats the point in making it if you are going to start banning it all over the place?

Do we actually care about that level of accuracy?

The article is dead wrong. The zombies will win when the arise, because while we have brains and guns, they will have zombie Jesus on their side.
Zombies are the new vampires, and to date none of them sparkle in the sun.

ALL OF US are "dead anyway". Life is a condition with a 100% fatality rate. It's just a matter of when.
Lets say 99.999999%. There is that freaky Jewish zombie that nobody has been able to hunt down and decapitate yet...

Government--the most corrupt organization in the world-
Really? Really? Citation, please.

Wow, very cool. I have been looking around for something similar myself.
While we are on the topic, anyone seen a good solution to scan, OCR, and reconvert existing crappy pdfs to improve them?
China is positioning themselves for a hot war.

the Chinese military seem far more rational than the US military at this time...
thats ok, they can have France....
Ok, quick little game of 'spot the prior art'.

aye, but the part I was mocking is the almost tautology like simplicity of a statement saying you are against immoral thing 'X'.
