If you read the Car Talk article, you would see that most of those concerns have been fixed.
- Message Center allows the update/etc messages to be turned off on install or anytime.
- The free player is only 2 clicks from the front page.
- The non-standard installer is pretty easy to use now.
So... what's the problem?
Is this much of a surprise?
All the newspapers talk about the continuing layoffs and/or low employment in the CS fields.
Why would any smart college-bound student go into a field where there are already thousands of qualified people who are unemployed?
I count myself lucky to have survived (thus far, knock on wood) with a decent job in the field.
The RIAA cannot prove that you do not own a copy of the music already, thus it can't sue with as much certainty.
Microsoft, however, can be fairly certain YOU don't have the rights to the Windows source. So it seems downloading OR uploading it would be dangerous, either way.
IANAL, btw.
Answer: Yes, it has changed.
What are your problems with it anyhow?
It seems like trying it out before judging it might be a good plan. The new player really is good.:)
Then you're part of the problem, not the solution.
When people get advice like that, they then blame Microsoft for "putting out a bad operating system" and causing all the problems like Blaster, Code Red, etc.
In actuality, many (I'm not saying all) of the problems had been patched months and months before... but people refused to patch, either out of fear or ignorance.
So by proudly flaunting your advice of "never updating"... you are admitting to cause more problems than you're fixing. If ever there were a time to be an AC, your comment would have been one.
Advocating ignorance is not something to be proud of.
I buy my CDs for $0.01 each! And I get 12 of them all at once! I'm sure there's no possible repercussions of this!
;-)
Surely this "Columbia House" place won't rip me off....

Everything people complain about seems to have been addressed.
So what's the point in using a pirated/reverse-engineered piece of software again, except to hurt people who have done exactly what you asked?
Damned if you do, damned if you don't?
Make up your mind...

Well, if Bob can listen to his radio, then I should be able to talk to my browser at a reasonable volume...
No, you don't need to log off.
You can choose to run something as Administrator.
Right click -> Run as
Surely two clicks is not too much to ask for.
If you want to bash Windows, at least use a valid claim.
Or the gay geeks among us are spared this problem as well. :-)
I know you are, but what am I?! ;-)
That's why Rhapsody is cool. I agree... Why get 10 songs when I can play 29272 if I want for the same price?
<hopeful>
Can't it be both?
</hopeful>
Formatters are too lazy to actually work to get things done. Similarly, I would have read the rest of your comment, but...
Windows, eh?
Imagine a Beo-- what, too soon?

.. can't wait for the new MS game!
;-)
Duke Nukem Forever Online... man. This is gonna be great. Anyone know when it'll be out?
IANALBIDRG... new acronym?
So is 127.0.0.1! Whew... guess I'm safe! ;)
You would likely be among the very few.
Most people hated the ending, which is why Death/Air were redone... Because it was too abstract for most people to 'get' what was going on.
iPodService.exe (runs as SYSTEM)
iTunesHelper.exe (runs as Administrator)

Sarcasm? ;-)
What's that?

It means they just changed the Matrix.
Oh no....
Well, working for software companies that give it away for free makes it tough to kick... I was (and am back up to) drinking around 7-8 sodas a day.
The best way is to slowly drink less each day.
Maybe drink one soda (or coffee) less every week.
You may need to stay with one or two at the end... but is that so bad?
Controlled addiction is better than an out of control one.
I make much more money selling magazines than I EVER did at SCO.... ;-)
Humans created them.
/we/ don't always have reasons for killing. Why should they?
Even
We kill, or have killed, people for land... why should they be any different? "What we want, we take"
