Some twit's stupid installer overwrites MSVCRT.DLL with a borked version that breaks half your other applications? On XP, you're screwed - can't overwrite it 'cuz it's always in use.
Incorrect. There are a number of tools which permit protected system files to be overwritten. It will require a reboot, but that's not a big deal.
And did you ever proof-read your statement? "... stupid installed overwrites"... "on XP... can't overwrite it".
That right there should show you that it is completely possible to "overwrite" or restore the file.
I was browsing Disney.com, ironically, and noticed that the traditional art animator description contains the line "DUE TO OUR CURRENT PRODUCTION NEEDS, WE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING TRADITIONAL PORTFOLIOS ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS."
I dunno about you, but I'm interested in this... I just hope they don't ruin it like they did with Enter The Matrix.
There was sooo much hype, yet it failed to deliver. Just a bunch of crawling around in the same repetitive scenes, and then some random tasks -- quick shoot the tires out and if you fail you'll start all over again.
Plans to create such a device using -- the phreaker's favorite place -- Radio Shack parts have been available at least 7 years online, and most likely longer.
This isn't just old news... its VERY old news.
I suppose the only "new" thing is that now someone has decided to actually manufacture and sell them, rather than make you search for box plans online....
While we're at it, should I mention you can make a box that gets you free long distance? Makes people think you have hung up, when you haven't really, etc...
Queer Eye doesn't just fix their problems and say "Here is what you need to wear to not look like a slob. By the way, your hair sucks"... they actually take the guy and say "Hey, this would look good on you, this would look good in your house... and here is how to do it from now on." They give tips, pointers, and no-no's.
Geek Eye just said "Here's a bunch of technology, which you have no idea why you need it and not something else... now use it." There was nothing beyond the How To UseExpensive Technology for Dummies crash course that they were given.
If you want people to actually grow and learn, you need to explain why. Honestly, technology is a more difficult beast to master than fashion... although looking at many/. readers, I'm sure that may be relative.;-)
Don't be so sure.
I went to interview at a games company 2 years ago. I had been playing on the game (it was a MMORPG, albeit a text one) for about 6 years... several years of which I was a minor.
I had once been part of a dubious operation, of which I was ruled against because the other person had left the game.
In spite of that, my character was banned/locked out/etc... When I went to interview for a job (bear in mind this is 4 years later), I got asked to explain my actions.
That to me is pretty extreme.
"I see you want to work for Milton Bradley. Now, we understand in a game years ago with your family, you 'borrowed' $200 without passing go... how do you explain yourself?"
See the hypocrisy?
My sister had a patch once.... ;-)

Ahh... so it behaves much like the typical Slashdot reader? ;-)
Over 41,000 signatures now for the LoTR: RoTK petition!
Ummm.
The only pair that fits is Hayes and Heatherington.
Gates & Jobs are the ones who stayed... and are rich.
Paul Allen and The Woz left, but also still have a lot of money.
So... how are they related again?
This is /. -- maybe you should give some easier advice to follow? ;-)
Don't worry!
;)
Even when that day comes... the Governator can still come and save us all!
You obviously somehow forgot the "Big Mac" song from McDonalds. There are /much/ worse jingles that go on and on and on.....

Should be a clue, eh?

"Revolutionary" my @$$...
I agree... what an outrage! You should go to www.whitehouse.com and report that immediately! ;-)
You get offers by people selling the Swen virus? Sweet! Could you forward them on? I've been looking for.... ;-)

Interesting... in the report, it claims "not much" happened as a result from the outcry from the broadcast to make sure it didn't happen again.
As a former radio broadcaster, I can call BS on that -- one of the FCC's No No's includes things that would incite a panic falsely.
If you want more info on it, the FCC giveth.
Crackers?!
... yes, I know he didn't mean that type of cracker.
Always trying to keep the man down! What ever happened to equality?!
... the time we spend reading all the press releases and such? How do we get /that/ time back?
Some of us prefer the term lady, if you don't mind...
Write it on WWDN and they might take more notice than just a comment on /. ;)
Along with the good folks from Martha Stewart's company to manage our stock portfolio? ;-)
That's part of the problem.
;)
If Canadians focused more on education than wit, then you WOULD know about Australia and it's wonderful people...

Would they then explain that news can be obtained on places besides websites? Blasphemy... ;)
A Class Action lawsuit?
:/
Against whom?
Not Microsoft, hopefully.
I think the blame should rest on the Admins who are too lazy to patch their systems.
But of course people won't do that.
That would actually make SENSE...

I hope you deleted them immediately afterwards! Not because piracy is wrong... more just that Metallica sucks. ;)
