  5. This isn't new on UC Irvine Cracks Down on P2P · · Score: 1

Back when I was attending school at USC (South Carolina... the OTHER USC), I worked in the CS dept. We got our public image trashed when we "accidentally" turned off access to Napster. (It was about 3-4 years ago... Napster was really the only game around at the time).

Eventually, after a massive student backlash, there was a retraction published in the paper along with a sad statement, claiming access was "accidentally blocked with the addition of our new firewalls."

But in all honesty, blocking access to P2P networks is hardly new. The bandwidth eaten up by sharing files is huge, obviously -- not to mention the legal ramifications -- both things being something a University most likely wants to wash its hands of.

I hate to burst your bubble, but you are completely incorrect.

The reason why I got broadband is NOT for P2P.

    - I like being able to work from home. It's not really possible via dialup.
    - I like to be able to play multiplayer games online. Something about a 1200+ ping just makes it less fun.
    - I like being able to download my LEGIT things at a decent speed.

Believe it or not, some of us just like to be fast. Do I need the connection 24/7? No, but shared between a roommate and myself, the cost equals just a little higher than a single dialup account for me would be. So why does this necessarily equate that broadband = P2P thief?

  8. Be realistic... on AOL's new Linux PC · · Score: 1

Everyone with any knowledge of the Internet hates AOL. Why? Because AOL "dumbs down" the 'Net. It is quite annoying to have to explain to someone "No, chat rooms are not just a 'place' you can go to on the Web. That's part of AOL." That and their dang keywords.

Besides... what is the point of this. If people are using Linux, it should stand to reason that they have enough knowledge to get a REAL ISP.

All I need is to hear that damn voice... "You've got root!" heh.
