Well, I can actually tell quite easily that the 'system settings' window (the one in the back) is the active one. In the taskbar the blue underlining tells you what's active. Plus you can tell since the windows' title is greyed when not active.
I'd say, ditch the nvidia setup and acquire a matrox video board. http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/
Linux supports matrox boards very nicely with all bells and whistles. Especially if you're only interested in hw accell 2d.
I completely agree. My general state during the movies was "Die Hobbits Die!!!" which they regrettably failed to do which ruined the movies for me. Wrecking some cars or throwing some bricks at cops seemed like a proper emotional response after 9 hours of torture.

just buy a system w/ windows preinstalled.
DO NOT accept the EULA; instead install linux
Ask for a refund of the installed software.
That way, your system can be cheaper than a system w/o an os preinstalled:)

About the "copying software is not stealing".
How would you call the leakage of pre-release software? The software might have been made by a single individual who, until the software is released in public, actually owns the only existing copy in the world? And the programmer's son copies the software for fun (without his father's knowledge) and puts it on the internet?
If "patterns of information" are written down somewhere, it's no problem to copy them? How about money? Can I copy money without having a problem??
I'd love to use that defense in court if I were a complete moron.
