Not every government (friend of foe) wants to spend $600,000 per missle for a Tomahawk. That price doesn't include the launch system for a Tomahawk. The other US built cruise missle is the Air Launched Cruise Missle (ALCM) that the Airforce launches off of B-52s and B-1Bs. That missle isn't used by any other country because they don't have a good bomber to use as a weapons platform. I'm not even sure if we even offer the ALCM for export. So far, the only other user of the Tomohawk is the British Royal Navy.

The Russians have cruise missles (both sea and air launched) and I'm sure they are cheaper but their accuracy is an unknown quantity. The French also have their Air-Sol Moyenne Portee (ASMP) cruise missile.

The point this guy makes is that he can make one that is reasonably accurate and MUCH cheaper.

Hypothetically, it wouldn't be a bad idea for a nation like Taiwan, who has a limited defense budget but a much larger adversary right across the straight, to come up with a medium range and cheap cruise missle that they could produce in large numbers. If they had a couple thousand of these, Bejing might think a second or two longer before coming after them.

  16. Sport Pilots License on Flying Car More Economical Than SUV · · Score: 3, Interesting
While I find the M400 very interesting, I think the future of aviation will be affected to a much greater degree by the proposed regulations for pilot licensing.

The FAA has proposed new rule for what will be called a Sport Pilots License. The rules should be approved this summer and it will make it much easier for anyone to become a pilot. For one, you won't have to take an expensive physical any longer.

However, there are a lot of restrictions on someone with an SPL. You can't fly an aircraft that has a gross takeoff weight higher than 1232lbs. You can only fly under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) conditions and you cannot fly any faster than 132MPH.

Because flight training takes place in the less expensive Light Sport Aircraft class (LSA) flight training should be less expensive. Also, a prospective SPL student only needs to fly 20 hours to get their license. Normally, you have to fly at least 40 hours.

    Personally, I can't wait.

  18. Re:Reality Check on Flying Car More Economical Than SUV · · Score: 2, Informative

The FAA only requires that aircraft fly 500 feet apart from one another, unless they are in formation. Add to that, the fact that there is sooooo much sky out there and you have a lot of room. The only real congestion in the air right now is above major airport hubs and even that is very manageable. However, you are correct that improvements need to be made. It is difficult to orient yourself over 3 axis, so NASA and several other groups have been working on a new navigation system which would create virtual highways in the sky. In fact that is one of the technologies that Moller is counting on. This technology is also aimed to take airtraffic away from the major hubs and get more aircraft out to the regional and smaller airports. The US has 10s of thousands of airstrips that could easily handle a huge increase in aircraft traffic. Your last point about bad drivers is moot IMO though. Car drivers receive little or no training before getting their licenses. Fixed and rotory wing pilot must undergo a MINIMUM of 40 hours of flight training before getting lisenced. Classes can cost over 3000 bucks. That greatly minimizes the amount of bad pilots out there.

The odds of losing two engines (UH-60) and the main mod (aka tranny) have to be so high that you'd have better luck winning the lotto.

I've always been "pro car" but when I was working at the Pentagon I came across the most social form of public transportation I've encountered, SLUGGING.

The I-95 corridor from Quantico to DC has two HOV-3 lanes. Very few people actually use these lanes (a waste IMO) because it is hard to find friends that are willing to carpool with you.

Then, a long while back, people started parking their cars at the commuter lots and literally hitching a ride with total strangers up HOV lanes to DC.

By the time I started Slugging, it had evolved into it's own little system without any government influence. I would go to Potomac Mills mall in Woodbridge, VA and park at their commuter lot. I had a choice of getting a ride to 14th street in DC (next to a train station) or I could go directly to the Pentagon (which also has a train station). Everyone would patiently stand in line and wait for the next car to give them a ride.

Slugging lines became a community. People that broke in line (whether they be in cars or on foot) were scorned by the group. Everyone pretty much got along great. From my time there, I never heard of any crimes committed when slugging. I also got to know a lot of the people who were riding. Some of us became fast friends. It was also a good opportunity to network with others.

There were some basic rules for slugging that everyone stood by. For one, the driver couldn't charge you. That was against the law anyways. Secondly, any driver could refuse to pick you up, though I never saw this happen. Riders could also refuse to ride with any driver. That made sense because some of those cars were crap.

There were many funny stories I could tell during my two years of slugging. I can honestly say that I'd do it again. It really was a fine example of simply living and getting along with your fellow human being.

If you live in the DC area, you can find out more by visiting http://www.slug-lines.com/ They even have a lost and found if you leave something in your drivers car. I actually had the chance to return a guys laptop that he left in my car. We are still friends today.

IMO, this is just one more fine example of how good man CAN be.

    cheers
