  1. They aughta put virgin on the list on Disruptive Technologies For Next 5 Years · · Score: 3, Informative

You can get a cell phone from Virgin for $60. Talk time is 25 cents a minute for the first 10 minutes, and 10 cents after that. What's so great about that? NO PLAN. You just buy these cards with extra minutes on them whenever you need more time to talk. Why should I spend $38 a month on home phone service? I rarely talk on the phone. Even if I make one 4-minute call each day, it'll still only add up to $30 a month. For the young single person, these are perfect.

You know, Quark has eschewed Mac standards for as long as I can remember. They're UI was (is) totally proprietary, and their key shortcuts are a pain to figure out. Learning Quark was about as easy as learning a whole new OS. I always got the feeling it was totally hacked together. Maybe if they'd spent a little time making their program more standard, they wouldn't have this problem. I have no sympathy.

  6. Re:not Quark related -- Education probably had say on Reprieve for Booting New Macs With Mac OS? · · Score: 3, Insightful

The sooner the educational market switches to OSX the better. I've been using Classic since 7.5, and one thing I didn't like about it is that stuff learned about the Mac OS was non-transferrable. You can learn to hack with ResEdit and write Applescripts and have fun on a Mac, but those skills were useless on any other OS. I always felt like if you want to get your hands dirty, you should run *nix. I knew Windows pretty well in high school, and when I got to college, I didn't even know what Unix was. Now we've got OS X. If you train kids on OS X, they'll be ready for any computing direction. If they go into a computer science field, it'll be an easy transition to a Unix or Linux box (not that they couldn't use a proprietary OS). If they become designers, audio engineers, or digital video specialists, they'll already know the most used OS. If they just want to be Sales Monkeys or gamers, well, they'll have to learn Windows.

It's not an issue of how flawed Classic was. What's important is that OSX is built on rock-solid open technology, the same that is being used on the world's best servers and workstations. I just got OSX a short while ago. Pretty soon, I'll be figuring out how to run a cron job. That knowledge is not Mac-specific. It's general computing knowledge. I like that.

Were they really? I'd be curious to know if the service contract mentions anything about modifying your system to increase bandwidth. If it doesn't, can they be prosecuted for anything? My first instinct is "they were taking away bandwidth from the rest of the community and should be punished." But is that even accurate? I have Optimum Online cable, and I understand that they don't cap their modems (I've even hit download speeds of 700kbps/sec). If a competitor's standard is not capping, it's gotta be hard for the ISP to prove damages.

If you're on a talk show (or many times, in a news article), it's beacause you have something to sell, not because you have something interesting to say.

I have to admit, my first reaction to the story was "freak." My second was "clothing line? Where can I get some?"

My site offers my own music for free, along with the source. I also will provide links to anyone else making open-source music, but most musicians seem to be reluctant to give away their seperate tracks. The EFF lists all the music that anyone is releasing under their Open Audio License. This is partly what you're asking for, except that if you're under another license (like my Open Source Music License), or just simply giving away downloads, they won't list you. I can't seem to find the links page now; maybe they took it down?

The problem with mp3.com (one of them anyway) is that they host the music, so they have to make some money somehow to offset the bandwidth costs. A site that linked to the bands' websites could be cheap and simple and maybe offset the hosting costs through ad or membership revenue (like /. does). The other benefit to this is that bands with sites are generally more dedicated, and the overall quality of the music might be better.

What would make this perfect though is some kind of rating system, maybe like Amazon's. Listeners could rate albums (or songs), so someone just visiting the site would have a better chance of finding something they really liked.

Well, hell. I'm not one to sit around whining. Send me (jcsehakatyahoodotcom), or reply to this post with, links of bands you like that let people download at least one complete album of theirs for free. It's gotta be at least a complete album because averyone and their mother gives away sample songs; look how many free downloads there are on Amazon. Include a short description of their style. I'll make a page that lists it all (in addition to open-source bands), and I'll see what I can do about making a rating system. Any help on that would be appreciated. Or just respond to this post saying it's a bad idea or someone else is already doing it and I shouldn't bother.

I found it to be annoyingly slow. Even after a clean install on a blank partition, I'd click on files and have to wait half a second for the computer to acknowledge it. I kept OS9 because Pro Tools hasn't migrated yet. They still don't have an OSX version, and I stopped using OSX 10.1. It was too sluggish.

I figured I'd just get the 10.2 update and use it when they made it faster. Then I found out there is no update. They want me to pay $120 for something I might not want to use, after I've already spent $120 on something I definitely won't use. I'm still using OS9 because I don't consider myself a rube. The next time I buy an operating system will be when I buy a new Mac and I get it included for free. No sooner.

Maybe even a slightly-underqualified woman. But doing this is discrimination, which is considered by nearly everyone to be Evil. I just thought it was interesting and wanted to challenge people's notions of discrimination.

The fact that Cathy is the only attractive women you've seen on the show probably says something about the ratio of attractive to unattractive women in the likes-to-make-stuff-out-of-scraps segment of the populace. And if you were really hot, probably only 1/4. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. I think it's great, in fact. There are plenty of areas in which being a minority is a disadvantage.
