  1. Re:The use of this excersise on Obfuscated HTML Contest? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I strongly disagree. HTML standards are standards for a very good reason -- it allows ALL producers of HTML clients AND HTML editors to aim for a common goal.

Following the "standards" as laid down by Internet Explorer will mean those writing HTML documents will continue in bad habits learnt during the so-called browser wars between Microsoft and Netscape. If you take 10 random sites and check the source code of the home page, I'd wager than none of them are using valid HTML 4, although the standard has been public for over four years!

  3. i386 on Compile Farms for Commercial Software? · · Score: 2

I think it was on Slashdot that I read about a conversation between two users, one new to Unix operating systems and the other an old hand.

The new user was asking the older user why a lot of the packages had i386 in the title, warranting a reply from the experienced user of something along the lines of "because that is what they were compiled on...", leaving the new user to ponder about large farms of 386-processor machines.

Perhaps a compilation farm such as this could generate an even greater level of confusion!

  8. Re:Brewing beer since I was 6 on Do You Homebrew? · · Score: 4, Informative

    Beer is an Aussie thing.

Apparently not. According to this web site, beer was "invented" by the Mesopotamians and Sumerians as early as 10,000 BC.

Obviously one cannot discount the fact that the indigenous population of Australia may also have made the same discovery, but otherwise one must presume the earliest brewing of beer having taken place after the first (European) settlement in 1788.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but I'd be surprised if a Windows 98 box could manage the same uptime as my Debian GNU/Linux box. The "tools" one uses does have an effect.

The strange thing is, I don't actually modify anything, since I'm only using it for checking my e-mail! Just because I curiously deleted some files on my dad's laptop when I was young, they no longer trust me! :-P
