Again, alarmist or not, I must echo the sentiments of other posters in stating that when it becomes pervasive, when you cannot buy groceries without an RFID chip, then it's not really about choice, now, is it? I do believe in freedom of choice, and if you want to implant yourself, go right ahead. But I am simply sick and tired of this Objectivist/Libertarian-esque rhetoric that would have us believe that the best society is the society that, while maintaining an illusion of free will, at least for those on the very top, the "John Galts" of the world, those on the bottom, or those merely satisified enough with their lives that they live simply in a middle class existence, would be the ones most affected by rfid chips, and most of us can't simply choose to find another job at the drop of a hat.

Just so you know, those Mullahs, when they call us "The Great Satan" are actually 100% correct. You see, the word Satan, at least in Hebrew, though I don't know if it's similar to Farsi, means "enemy", "accuser", or "opposition". That's all it means.

A woman had been married three times and was still a virgin. Somebody asked her how that could be possible.

"The second time I married a naval officer and war broke out on our wedding day."

  13. Re:Now all they need is someone to back them. on They Might Be Giants Open Their Own Music Store · · Score: 0

And what's wrong with that? Why must everything be a competition, and why do so many folks insist on validation for their lives, their tastes, and their very existence?

What's so bad about this being "just a band selling their own music"?

    As an example,

I know this guy, a DJ (drum n bass, (icky)), who when we would talk about music, he would insist that "P Diddy", or whatever his name is this week, is a damn fine artist and musician, because of all the money he has.

Again, I would ask, why must one have validation from other consumers, and why must a band have validation from other bands before they matter?

I do however think that it matters in one specific way: If it does catch on, and many bands started online labels minus DRM and at a fair price, the mainstream music buying public would quickly run out of "pop idols" to faun over, Britney's career would be more over than it is now, and some REAL music, written and performed with the intention of being music, not COMMODITY, would rule the day.

The scary thing to me is with what we know about Abu Ghraib, and the supposed Mossad connections in training our Intel Community re: Interrogation technique, American Citizens can soon expect torture while being incarcerated (not that it does not happen at all, just more official policy this time). The bottom line, as far as I am concernec, is that Bush and his Cohorts are traitors, and they should either be given a US Military tribunal, or, though I don't like this idea as much, given to the Hague for prosecution of War Crimes. As far as the latter happening, I don't think it's very likely. As for the former, does anyone think that there are any US Soldiers, Grunt, Brass, or otherwise, who believe in the Constitution enough to help restore it, if you catch my meaning? Can you say COUP? I knew you could. SEDITION NOW!!

As someone relatively inexperienced in some of the more complex parts of Linux, I can tell you without a doubt why i still run WinXp.

I have an external Tascam usb sound interface, the US-122, with which to record music via midi, audio, and in order to make it work in Linux, let alone use apps like Cool Edit(which ain't gonna happen any time soon)is like pulling teeth.

I have been able to, with the help of a friend, make Slackware 9.1 see it, and play audio through the speakers from my synth, but nothing else. No midi, no mp3 or wav (xmms will not work)

So I am left with a dilemma.

You see, I love Slackware, I have found it to be the most powerful yet most simply elegant solution for Linux out there.

But I need to be able to reliably record multitrack audio at low latency and high resolution, burn cd's simply, and be able to LISTEN to music on my computer with xmms or a similar winamp clone.

PR sure would help, but until the killer apps are there, and most devices/peripherals just simply work when you plug them in, I would have to stay with Windows.

And I don't want to, but I desire the ability to make music more than the ability to not run proprietary and closed code.
