That's like someone who doesn't know about computers saying "oh, processors, ram, motherboards, and pci cards, they're all the same thing". Each of those things you named apply to different pieces of non-tangible goods. Copyrights traditionally protect an individuals works as pertaining to music, art, or written works. Trademarks protect something typically associated with a business. Such as the Nike swoosh and the Target logo. Patents protect a process or idea so that they may not be copied until the owner of the patent has had time to establish his or her idea. And trade secrets shouldn't even be on that list as they are not directly able to be upheld as a law.
If you had actually read the article you would see that the author didn't imply this at all. He said that software should have different regulations than music.
"We should treat protections for computer software in a different way than music, for example, and lengthy copyright terms should be available only to those who bother to check in with the Copyright Office every few years."
He also said that more detail is need in copyright laws for specifics like this, so a situation just as you mentioned wouldn't arise.

It's not to hard to rig up a custom set up yourself. For most stereos you can at least get an adapter to allow aux inputs. On mine it runs through the cd changer controls to the aux input adapter. Then that runs to my belkin auto charger which has a little amp in it. The auto charger is spliced into the cigarette lighter, but this is all under the dash so all you see coming out is the data cable from the belkin charger. And the vent clip on cell phone holder that they sell at radio shack is a perfect fit for the iPod. Here is a pic of the setup. My iPod Setup
10.2 (Jaguar) was an upgrade that cost money, along with that came 10.2.1, 10.2.3. 10.2.4, and 10.2.6 Those were all free. 10.3 is a system overhaul with a host of new features. Would it make you feel better if they called it Mac OS X 2004? The number is irellevant, it's like going from Windows ME to Win XP. And finally, if you don't want to pay money you don't HAVE to upgrade.
This is totally off topic buuttt... Listen closer next time. Amnesiac much like Hail To The Theif is was just a bunch of good Radiohead songs thrown together IMO. The Bends had cohesion, OK Computer had cohesion, but Kid A was perhaps the most cohesive album I own. Sit back with some headphones at about 3 AM when it's nice, dark, and quiet, and give that album a listen. The thing gives me chills because of it's stripped down beauty, yet it has so much depth.
Haha, that's pretty damn funny. I love macs, in fact I have a Rev B. iMac and a TiBook on my desk. But they seriously heat my room up to sauna standards. Even in the winter time if I have my door closed I have to open up the window in my room to let cold air in.
Yes I saw the movie and I don't see how you can't see that it's pretty much just a love story. I have a hard time seeing any deep philosophical meaning in it, certainly nothing that's new or exciting. The architect told him he could continue the system and everything would start over, or he could continue in this world and crash the system (which would mean he had a chance to save her) He decided he wanted to take that chance purely based on the fact that he didn't want to see her die. That part of the story line just had far too much emphasis for me. If you disagree, fine, but try to look at the story line objectively, and tell me it's not just a glorified love story with 20 minute special effect fight scenes now.
Okay, I'll tell you why it wasn't challanging at all to me. The stupid thing turned into a friggin love story! Aw, Neo sacrifices everything to save his woman, how cute. The first movie was more of an introspective thing challanging perception. This turned into a cheesey feel good movie, just like the new star wars ended up doing. I'm tired of happy endings and love stories, I want a challanging movie that doesn't have a happy ending to sell tickets. This is why I admired Fight Club so much, the movie made itself a philosophical plot, and stuck with it all the way through.
I think a better option for "3D" movies is a project I saw some people working on once. They rigged a contraption that could film from 360 degrees at once... so you could watch a movie from the main shot, but at any time scroll to behind to see what's goin on behind you. It could be really cool if pulled off right. Imagine an interactive movie with surround sound where you'd hear a blast behind you and be able to scroll back there to see what the hell happened.
I would take a wild guess, and say not many slashdotters are into imports, but that was an article from Sport Compact Car from 2 years ago. It was actually supposed to be a joke, but a good amount of people took it seriously at the time. Sport Compact Car got a lot of hate mail the month after that was published, hah.
I can guarantee you that for that price this hardware is going to be weak. Sure, I have my Rev B iMac sittin right next to me, with a 500 Mhz G3 plus Firewire upgrade no less. It runs OS X, is relatively inexpensive, but it's slow! I'm typing right now on my 1 Ghz TiBook, which of course runs OS X at a hefty clip, but also comes with a hefty price. To get decent Apple hardware to run OS X, it's not going to be possible with used goods. OS X is the best OS ever IMO, but it's also a hardware hog. These computers at $500 a pop or whatever will be G3's in the 500 mhz range I would guess, the guy is going to be looking for old iMac motherboards. It's not a revolutionary idea, nor is it a money saving idea. As long as apple is the only person making apple hardware, it's not going to get any cheaper for what you get. Look in any Mac catalog, all the computer prices are the same, what you get is more extra stuff thrown in. You can't lower the price on mac hardware, you can only buy dated stuff.
Hey, I used my Rev B iMac from 1998 all the way up until this january when I got my TiBook. People said they weren't upgradable, hah! My iMac has 512 MB RAM (originally only said it could have 256 MB), a 40 gig HD (came with a 4 gig), a Gamewizard Voodoo2 3D card, and a 500 Mhz G3 processor upgrade (originally 233) with Firewire. So I'd say for a computer that "wasn't" upgradable, it stood the test of time!
Well in that case, I'll sell you a piece of history:-D I have a Rev B iMac sittin right next to me, haha. Remember, the price is at a premium now cuz it's a collectors item
I sure hope the guys at Unsanity pick up some prizes. They have had the most polished little helper apps/preference panes for OS X. I use Silk, Windowshade, Fruit Menu, and Shadowkiller all from them, couldn't get by without that stuff.
I went through the adding to cart process, and made a Dell with roughly the same specs as my Powerbook, now lets compare.
My Powerbook
-15.2 In Widescreen
-1 Ghz G4
-1 Inch Thick
-5 lbs w/drive and battery
-CD-RW/DVD-R (standard)
-1 Gig RAM
-60 Gig HD (standard)
-ATI 9000 w/64 MB (standard)
-OS X Included Free
-Price $2,836 shipped
Dell
-15.4 Inch Widescreen
-2.2 Ghz P4
-1.5 inch thick
-6.5 lbs without drive
-CD-RW
-1 Gig RAM
-60 Gig Hard Drive ($130 extra)
-Nvidia GeForce 4 4200 64 MB ($99 extra)
-Win XP Professional ($79 extra)
-Price $3436
Funny thing those consumers... the Powerbook is lighter, sleeker, has a DVD Writer, and is $600 friggin cheaper. Apple is overpriced my ass....
The sad thing is, MS has already copied OS X design elements in XP. I'm a full time mac user, so the few times i've used XP it really stands out to me. Next time you're using XP take a look at the Login screen... almost a clone of the OS X login screen. And the whole thing about the bubbly icons and more colorful rounded design elements didn't really exist on a large scale until OS X came out. Take a look at how derivative a lot of these elements are in XP. Maybe it's just cuz I'm an anal Mac using graphic designer though...:)
Heh, that's what kirk hammett from metallica uses. Back when I was obsessed with them I wanted one just so I could be like him... good to know it woulda been a good investment;)
I used this about a week ago and the widgets aren't very exiting. It would be helpful if you could lock the widgets so they didn't move, but as it is now it's pretty useless, pretty much just windows floating on your desktop. I use Meteorologist (for weather), PTItunesnotifier (for itunes control), and MenuMeters (for RAM/CPU Usage) and those all go in my menu bar. The menu bar is a much better place for any of these apps because it can be seen globally... I don't spend a lot of time staring at my desktop, where these widgets would be.
Not if your band was The Doors:) They were only allowed on Ed Sullivan once, even though they had a deal for 6 more appearances. They got kicked off though for not changing their "babe we couldn't get much higher" lyric in Light My Fire. Then again, I suppose that's still publicity, no such thing as bad publicity.
Call me crazy, but I think that website was just made to sell some tickets for a cheesey show. This neither proves nor disproves anything exists. I could make a pic on my computer, put up a site and say I caught it with my super-neo-plasmic-electron-scope and it'd be just as relevant. Might as well just tune into Unsolved Mysteries guys...
Funny you mention that... I actually have RCA Cables (Radioshack at that) running from my TiBook at my desk to my home stereo. Sounds great. As far as i'm concerned, getting stuff connected in the home is no problem. The car is where I may drop money to get my mp3s through the stereo
Heh, locked to one vendor for hardware... In my Rev B iMac I have a 3rd party 3-D card, a 3rd party processor card/firewire port upgrade, 3rd party RAM, 3rd party internal harddrive, 3rd party external harddrive, 3rd party cd writer, 3rd party USB hub, 3rd party mouse, 3rd party game pad, and soon a 3rd party Firewire harddrive. What's left? My case, my monitor, my cd-rom, and my motherboard... if I wanted to change those it'd be a better value just to get a new eMac anyways.
