    Works the same with every app.

    That might be true, but it sure doesn't work between every app. If I left-select text in one app, then middle-click in another app, some apps will paste, some apps won't.

    And let's say I want to copy stylized text. Ha! Don't even mention graphics.

    Pick up starcraft or NWN or some other game that allows you to build your own levels. They usually have event triggers and a mini scripting language, so you can focus on how that logic works and not have to deal with artwork and music.

    You could also take a look at Macromedia Flash. They have a usable scripting language and you can draw or import graphics and sounds from elsewhere.

    Let's say you loan me a gun, someone else borrows/steals it from me. Then gun is then used to commit a crime, and is left at the scene of the crime. Your name was engraved on it. The police will come to you, you say I borrowed it, I say it was stolen.

    Same here. They have an IP address. Prevously, the RIAA could go to the ISP and ask who it was. If someone was stealing wifi signals, hacked in, etc. They have the IP, they're just following it down the line. If it was your gun/ip address, you better have a good excuse for the jury.

    With worn SCSI drives?

    These machines used IDE. You needed to get a PCI card to get SCSI support. Of course, I'd trust an old IDE drive less than an old SCSI drive...

    I have an old NeXT Cube that's been serving ftp, dns, smtp, and static http for the last 4 years without a problem. I did upgrade the memory and replace the hard drive, though.

    there was a slsahdot article a couple weeks aback about an anti-spam group over in Europe that bought a CD of email addresses to analyze it. They found a lot of duplicates, a lot of invalid (as in not legal format) addresses, a lot of ed@myNOSPAMsite.com obfuscication, and postmaster@127.0.0.1. Whether tha address is valid isn't even a concern for harvesters, apparrently.

    My cable broadband access is authenticated by MAC address. Almost every (consumer level) router has the ability to set it's own MAC address for that purpose.

    Unless you're some sort of 2-person company that doesn't have your own servers and uses aol dialup for internet access, somebody is being incredibly stupid. I sure wouldn't want important company documents and business plans stored elsewhere.

    For instance: if a file has many sources then that means they have the same hash, you can be quite sure that it isn't a bogus loop of a pr0n flick when you really wanted that latest DVD rip.

    That's true, but it doesn't do any good if you spend 2 days downloading paris_hilton_sex_video.mpg only to find out some asshole simply renamed shemales_volume_2.mpg.

    I find it amusing for slashdot to be discussing censorship in virtual worlds.

    Consider slashdot itself. Most users browse at +1 or higher, so anything moderated below that is effectively censored (ACs have a default score of 0, but they choose to post at that level).

    There's a lot of crap at the 0/-1 level, but there are also a lot of valid criticisms and opinions that the moderating community doesn't agree with.

    posix isn't entirely what you think it is.

    For example, this is a posix-compliant fork(2) implementation:

    It's totally useless, but it's 100% posix-compliant.

    MACH was developed at CMU, and is unrelated to BSD. OSX and NextStep have BSD running on top of mach.

    microsoft doesn't have a trademark on "windows", they have a trademark on "Microsoft Windows". Of course, "window" as a computing term pre-dates "Microsoft Windows".

    Playboy has a trademark on "Playmate" and "Playboy". Prior to Playboy magazine, those terms did not have an association with adult magazines/entertainment or naked girls.

    Playboy didn't invent those words, but it gave them a new meaning, which is what is trademarked.

    IRC is not IM. Let's say I need to talk to Bob in Accounting. With IM, I can check if he's online, and if so, send him a message, get a reply.

    With IRC, everybody has to be logged in to the IRC room or you can't send a message. If there's a lot of people logging in/out, chatting, etc, any message you send to Bob will probably be lost if Bob is busy doing work instead of dicking around in IRC.
