interesting that this was called flamebait. seemed funny to me. Of course, as it requiressome knowledgf of operating system internals, it's not surprising the slsahbots missed its meaning.

Anyhow, with multitasking read/write I/O, the disk scheduling marks the commit bit in buffer pages to signal that they need to be written back to disk. And, commit has the dual meaning with CVS. Hence, it's funny.

I post this because i enjoy slashdot. Once in a while, there's an intelligent post, or I learn somethng new. And I just love the trolls!

Unfortunately, it's not 1998 anymore, and slashdot is an albatross around VA Linux^wResearch^wSoftware's neck. Online advertising doesn't pay, especially when 75% of readers use an ad blocker or ad blocking browser.

CmdrTaco would have you belive that people only read slashdot for the front page links, not the reader comments. He better hope not -- if that were the case, kerneltrap + osnews + wired + the register would replace this dump.

I do have suggestions for "premium access" accounts (ie - a paid subscription model) that people might use, as well as some ideas in general to improve slashdot

    • Editors: Spell check the submissions. And also, check if it's a duplicate
    • Add https access. I'd pay for that. Hell, youcan roll-your-won SSL certificate for free and not have any costs (aside from a slight increase in bandwidth).
    • Add a "business" section. This would give you some value and make you a more sellable asset, at least in the eyes of the suits.
    • Add a Kathy-Cam. I know i'd pay not to watch.
    • Twice a year, have a story for people's complaints/suggestions wrt to slashdot. read the comments.
    • It's 2003. Slashdot should be using xhtml with css, and drop the kludgy tables for handling comment layouts. css also makes it easier for knowledgable slashdot readers (An oxymoron?) to customize the layout to their own liking.
    • Give eggtroll a job as a contributing editor.
    • stop linking to stories on other sites that have user comments (eg - OSNews, Kerneltrap, kuro5hin). It's redundant.
    • Linux sucks. get over it.
