No, after you apply the service pack (at least with SP2) it has something running in the background watching for this, so it retroactivly will apply all of it's updates to everything, no reapplying the service pack.
I saw it in one of the papers on SP2 on Microsoft's site, can't remember which one though.
Norton's released an update to it's AV software to make itself integrate just fine into the Security Center. I've got it running.
I'm currently running Kerio Personal Firewall, but I've heard ZA integrates just fine, which is good, as that is what we've put on the rest of my family's machines.
Kerio: Geek's firewall (advanced monitoring) ZoneAlarm: Normal user's firewall (ease of use, simplicity)
Just make sure after you install ZA (if reinstalling) that you disable the integrated firewall.
I Ghosted my machine, running XP Pro w/SP1. Slipstreamed SP2 into my XP Pro Upgrade CD. Restored from OEM CDs. Upgraded to XP Pro SP2, and then the problems started.
-Star Wars Galaxies locks up when I launch it. -Only the FN+F1 and FN+F2 keys work, the rest lock up the system. -Unplugging USB devices (other than thumbdrives when I stop them) or the power supply lock up the system. -On shutdown or hibernate, it stops at the end, right where it should power off, and hangs.
The kicker - I emailed eMachines tech support.
I apologize but we can only support the original software that was preloaded on the system. Upgrading the Operating System is already considered as third party software so any type of support will have to come from Microsoft. There is a possibility that the hardware is causing conflicts with the new Operating System and that you may need updated drivers for the devices installed on the computer.
...to Linux? Seriously, the big reason I haven't switched is because I'm lazy. I'm too lazy to get it all set up, and WINE working for my games..etc...
Too lazy to deal with it, so I keep putting it off (That doesn't mean I don't install it to play once in a while...)
I downloaded the one off of Bittorrent - and it WAS digitally signed, PLUS many MSDN and Windowsbeta subscribers posted the MD5 hashes on Neowin.net and several other sites, including Microsoft's SP2 newsgroups (as well as at least one MSFT employee verifying it) so on Saturday I knew I had it.
That the reason everyone is on MSFT's case is because they set a release date, and are only NOW changing it, only a few weeks at most away from release day.
TheElderGeek.com (http://www.theeldergeek.com/) has several instructions available:
Slipstreamed XP SP1a install (which slipstreams SP1a into a XP installation) http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstr eam_01.htm
Slipstreamed XP Rollup (which slipstreams the update rollup for SP1a into the XP SP1a installation, and also has instructions on how to add other updates and programs into the setup) http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstream_06. htm
Roll your own. Add extra programs to the CD.
I've added the following to mine, so I don't have to swap CDs: AdAware Spybot Search & Destroy Kerio Personal Firewall Zonealarm Firewall (For end users - less complicated than Kerio) Trillian GAIM DirectX9.0b WMP9 Winamp...etc
Seriously - roll your own. Very useful knowledge, can speed up the process in the long run, especially if you do multiple installs.
My family's Compaq Presario 5600i (custom built machine) had the 'Compaq Home Networking CD Version 1.0' bundled with it. This was *before* I knew how to really network, I knew I could, but why not just use the disk instead of having to learn? *I was like 14*
So we popped in the disk on November 25th. Worked fine. Next day - the 26th. All hell broke lose. Ended up the autorun.exe on the CD had the Chernobyl virus on it. Good thing we'd made backups - spent 1 week digging out of MS-BACKUP files EVERY executable on the machine.
Called Compaq - they totally denied ever having had made said CD.
9 months later, an envelope from Compaq arrives. I'm like WTF, I didn't order anything...It was the latest version of the CD. By then I'd already gone and learned how to set up TCP/IP etc etc etc and had done it myself.
I just realized I didn't answer the last of your questions, which was what advice I would have.
Do what most of the rest (of those who aren't self-absorbed, saying 'learn your place' basically, ignore them) have been saying:
Figure out what you love to do.
Now figure out how to get paid for it.
Even if it doesn't pay alot, having a great amount of money isn't everything. Enjoying life is. I'm having a great time, I go year-round for 3 years, 4 days a week, and I get to work on computers, any amount I want (picking how much work I do, and what kinds of work) plus I still have time to do what I want to do on weekends. Live at home if you can, (and if you can stand it) because it'll make the whole money issue much less.
Suggestion for college: perhaps see if parents have paid off morgage (or if can take out more on it) as that's how we're doing it for me. Lowest interest rate. Plus, took part of my college money and put it towards a brand-new car, so I wouldn't have to worry about it breaking down. Will run it into the ground, so by the time I buy a new one, I won't have to worry quite so much (Figure 5+ years down the road)
Realizing I'm posting late, but oh well. Contact me if you want to talk more.
I just graduated last year (Class of 2003) with a GPA of 2.45. ACT score of 29. I am also an INTP.
First a little background...
Went through the school system K-6 in the gifted & talented program, 7th/8th in advanced English classes (where we discussed what was on our minds, topics of the day, very cool class...some latin for our actual english along with 2 book reports per quarter)
When I hit Junior High School, I started bombing classes because:
1) From K-6 I'd never had to take work home or study for tests - straight A's, few B's. Never had to build a work ethic. 2) Classes started to be 'not interesting' somewhat. (Not a biggie til High School)
High School, still didn't learn. Failed Chemistry and Physics, due to lack of interest. Short attention span to the uninteresting, almost total devotion to that which I'm interested in. (Ask my family, friends and gf)
However, I found that I really loved computers. So from my sophmore year to my senior year (and still doing it) I volunteered with our tech guy (who amazingly, ended up having graduated with my aunt...totally unrelated) Got perhaps the MOST valuable knowlege there. Plus, now if I were to ever need a job, anyone who worked in the District would probably hire me - I was the kid who knew and knows all new tech. From Palm Pilots to WAPs, Laptops to software, the tech and I knew all, or at least knew how to find out.
I'm now attending college (Brown College, to be exact) pursuing an Associate's Degree and eventually a Bachelor's Degree in Technology (in INT (Information Networking Technology))
I also work for myself, doing computer consulting, networking, sales and support, which I all love. The best part, I make my own hours, and anything I don't want to do, I can suggest others who can do the same work.
I've been largely self-taught in the computer arena, with little experience in the rest (some forced, some by myself) Still learning, but I'm in much the same boat as you.
Do feel free to contact me if you (or anyone else for that matter) wants to know more, or have any questions.

If they want to claim the copyright on their works, they must step forward, and appear in court...meanwhile, all of/. (or at least a dozen or so of us) gather outside the courthouse, waiting for said S.O.B. to come out - then we execute him on the spot, and claim we are doing it because it is economically sound, and right.
Ummm....unless you're talking in batches of 1000, I believe you're mistaken...Whenever I've ordered AMD CPUs from Newegg.com and the like anyway, the difference between OEM and Retail is usually under $5.
You'd be dumb not to do it. The fans just sit on the shelf, if the box comes with built-in cooling (like my Shuttle SK43G) but I've had no problem with the two AMD heatsinks I got with the other two. (2400+ and 2600+)
Dude...I may still be a virgin, but I *don't* live in my parent's basement...I live upstairs, and my computers are in the basement.....wait a minute....
At these young ages, the concepts being taught are either too simple or too easy to bypass using a computer; it's impossible to teach keyboarding to kids who don't know the alphabet yet, and likewise with spelling when the kids can use a spelling checker.
Hell...I was given typing class in 2nd grade. Yet I'm the only one who remembers it, when I ask my fellow classmates of the Class of 2003.
Helped me ever since, never forgot it.
We *SHOULD* be integrating word-processing/typing skills at an early age - so they grow used to it, and don't have to try to take a course in it in high school when they're apt to get pissed at anything they have to spend actual time at (I have many non-techie friends, trust me, this is how they think)
Feds can say 'everyone gets x% tax based on $xx,xxx income'
States all add on top of that, whatever they come up with for their own.
Even IF the code isn't cut down...it's still reduced to ONE form.
Now, we *could* use some REFORM as in: -Reduction in laws -closing of loopholes (some, mainly those abused by rich/thieves/evaders)
NOT as in: -getting to one simple system (maybe base it on that)
but we do need to reduce the complexity. When a required government service/tax has a large percentage of the US paying someone to fill it out for them because it's too complex (mainly businesses) then there's maybe something wrong.

At least all of XP has had it...I do believe it's been there for maybe 98 and or 2000?

Well...if they don't give us the game eventually...they'll have lawsuits up the wazoo...
I'm still waiting, with my 9600XT to play....
They're just a pretty GUI add-on for Internet Explorer.
I've tried both of them. Useful, but as long as Internet Explorer remains a big security risk, I can't/won't use it.
Ditto.
Windows Update
Office Update

We should have a Minnesota Forum for /.ers. That's what we need.
/.. Let's not *just* discuss news. Let's have an open forum thread.
Make a forum for each state, and/or topic,
Love the idea.
Let's get it implemented!
Whoops, hit 'enter' instead of 'tab' there.
But, here's a good idea.
