I happen to still be on dialup. Despite having been told by USWest (which was bought by Qwest ~5 years ago) back at a Minnesota State Fair in about '99 or so that I'd have DSL in 6 months. They just put in the local trunk line, which I can now shoot. But they still haven't gotten my line to be able to use it...And no, cable's not in my area (never will...houses are too far apart) and satellite's too laggy and expensive.
You can customize Knoppix, but AFAIK it's a bit of a PITA, so I wouldn't do it unless it was for a large lab (non-modifiable reset on reboot images, anyone?) or massive deployment.
So this would be a wise choice, for anyone who needs portability, and has access to systems where they are working, but would like their Linux to come with them.
...meta-moderating. Seriously. I have mod points like every day, I can't seem to get rid of them fast enough. When the 'meta moderate' button is at the top - CLICK IT.
NOTE: BEFORE following the simple answer steps to put this file into your Steam directory, MAKE SURE that Steam is NOT running. (Otherwise it may try to checksum the file mid-copy and screw things up)
Technical answer:
Note: My technical answer is part guess, as I don't know how Valve does it. There is some conjecture however.
The Half-Life 2 Cache file (ending in.gcf) is basically a compressed, sometimes encrypted archive of the game's files. Rather than download each individual file, Steam does much like any P2P software does, and splits up the file (I don't know if it's by each file's amount of space, or an identical chunk size) and checks with the central server. (of which there are many) When either a file or portion of the chunk (as I said before - I don't know) is not current, it is downloaded.
The simple answer is:
Start Pre-Loading Half-Life 2 (So it makes the correct entries and knows that you've got the file started, if not finished)
Quit Steam (Exit and Logout, or just Exit, doesn't matter)
Take this file, put it into your C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps folder. (or wherever Steam happens to be installed on your particular system)
Start Steam.
You are now finished, and have the Half-Life 2 Preload (as much as has been released to date) loaded.
When I got mine, I immediately set up another steam account (I currently hold 9 - due to various situations and mistakes on my part, like not knowing that a Half-Life: Platinum Pak contains enough CD Keys for 3 Steam accounts)
The 'security module' is only downloaded on those servers that are running VAC. (Valve Anti-Cheat) I've joined hundreds of servers without having to download the VAC security module.
Cheaters? Find a server using CD (Cheating Death) and play on those...or just switch. Only about once a month at most do I encounter a server with a cheater. (I mostly play Natural Selection, however, YMMV)
Assuming that you have a card from ATI that says "Half-Life 2 Redemption Card" (or something similar...I've misplaced mine in a pile) then YES, you are entitled to a FREE copy of Half-Life 2 when it is unlocked.
Ha. My school won't even give the teacher a COPY of the book she's supposed to TEACH. So one student's been using the copier while I sit and watch the library (my nice, cushy I'm-paid-to-surf-the-web-and-play-games job) in the next room.
This would be very useful, in the fact that I often hit sites that have useful stuff, but it's loaded on many pages, and I'm on dialup at home, so I often can't 'just open it up' or when I'm not online at all (other location, etc)
BB sales rep obviously pitches the PSP to me and my dad (I'm in college, and he's writing it off on business etc...)
He says "Our service plan is better, and covers from year 1 through 3."
PSP Says it kicks in AFTER manufacturer's warranty. He says "Our service plan covers from 1 dead pixel."
PSP Says 6, if I remember correctly... He says "Our service plan will replace the battery once a year."
PSP says this, I think...
So, we say "It does? Wow." "Can we get that in writing?"
Sure enough....sales rep gets manager, and writes it all in my PSP, and both of them sign it.
So, when they say "Our PSP does ______" Tell them to put it in writing, and have them and a manager sign it.

Okay..here goes.
I was in (mostly) the same situation as you. Although we had/have techs at my high school (I graduated two years ago now - class of 2003) I fell into the same classification, fixing everything around the school. In fact, I *still* volunteer/work there.
Trust me, you WILL profit from it, you may not feel like you're getting any obvious recogonition, but the people who's problems you're solving will be GREAT references in the future.
I took advantage of said opportunity to try out the IT field, and I liked it, so I realized it's what I wanted to go into. I learned more in the time I've volunteered there than I have so far at college (which I am paying a VERY pretty penny for, I might add)
I've got more references than I could ever hope to shake a stick at, I've got a potential job if the economy ever takes another shit (assuming I have a job at the time and lose it) plus, I've got the massive work experience.
You're not getting the short end of the stick, trust me.
Tabs ON dual monitors...oh god, I don't know how I ever worked without them.....
...Then could we just please fast forward to the end, where it DOES rip itself apart? /me ducks
Well, if SWG is any indication, your name won't work! So I've got Quu Continuum!
Nyah nyah on you!
Oh, fuck off! (To quote Robin Williams)
I'd say wherever he bought it, try it out....

So I'm on dialup.
Try 7 Bay Networks System 5000 Chassis....they're sitting in the living room right now.
2 of them, with a piece of white plastic and garland make a *GREAT* Christmas tree.
(they're about 2' cubed, and way ~120 lbs)

No, all the 'cool kids' got it with their 9600/9800's in the form of an "ATI Half-Life 2 Redemption" card.
*looks at his card, drooling*
The 'Half Life 2 Cache' that he had linked to on filerush.com. I've also seen it on a .torrent.
Odd...sorry to hear that.
Maybe try creating a second account for posting articles, moderating, etc?
Link the two via journal or something? (Or maybe not, so as not to make a connection...)

Valve has a way to deal with this.

You walk through the 'Steam Troubleshooter' which is located here:

Specifically, you should end up on this page:

You will have to either mail in the key itself (the envelope it came in) or email a image of the CD, the keyflap, and a picture of your reciept.

So, it's against the Terms Of Service of the subscriber...thus, the reason legal action is probably going to be taken...

I'm one of these 'work/study' slaves and I don't make minimum wage, thank you. I get paid $8/hour and I TAKE ADVANTAGE of it!
/.
Not that I'd still care, considering our massive collection of about 200 books.
THAT'S RIGHT - I'M ACTUALLY PAID TO SURF THE WEB.
More specifically,
Dude...release it as GPL. Please.

Bought an eMachines M6805 laptop back in March.

Worked for me.
I charge $45 per stop right now, in house, to clean up a given PC.
This includes a spyware cleanup (using adaware and spybot at the moment - planning on expanding) and a basic system cleanup/optimization.
I get a fair amount of takers, considering I work basically on word-of-mouth.
I know Best Buy gets even more...I want to say $60 minimum.
Diiitttooooo
