Whats wrong with Cash? I like cash. Cash is good.
The only solutions to problems caused by free speech is more free speech. A little education and critical thinking can go a long way to dispell the crap that goes across the wire (or airwaves.)
Don't just listen to what is said, learn about who is doing the saying. If you know the motivation of who is doing the communicating then you can go a long ways towards determining its value.
How many people believe the car salesman when he tells you "This creampuff was only driven to church on sundays by a little old lady..." Look at the odometer, check the tires and check the engine. On every story you read and every comment you hear.
Hmmm, there are roughly three unexplained explosions for every unexplained fish! Someone needs to stop these fish from causing these unexplained explosions. Call your congressman!
Its not unusual for me to put strange coded messages in my code I am testing or debugging. I don't think its 'Unprofessional' just a mistake that it made it out onto a production machine.
How else can you entertain yourself while sitting in a 6x8 foot cubicle 8 hours a day.
The problem with DEC was their acronyms. DEC, VMS, etc. Booring. Nothing sexy about that. HP had classic sounding acronyms for their products. IMAGE, HP3000, MPE music to your ears. Microsoft is going for that cutting edge sounding stuff. Anything with an X in it. ActiveX XBox, XP, when the X fad is over, Microsoft will fail too. Just watch!
I'm not sure you are making sense. You complain about not "Owning" a book, yet when you are done with it you sell it back. So in reality you are only renting it.
If you pay full price for it and keep it, the book depreciates on your shelf until the data in it is out of date and worthless.
With E-Books, you pay for it the time you use it. Presumably at a much cheaper price than what you would pay for the dead tree version. When it gets updated, then you pay to use the newer version. I think this applies to most college textbooks particularly ones involving technology.
Now, the complete unabridged works of shakespeare on the other hand -- just buy the dead tree version and put it in a prominent place on your bookshelf to tell the world how cultured you are.
Yes. The.com weenies who are still struggling to survive are doing it with questionable ethics.
You notice as available VC goes down, the number of pop-ups, subscriptions and sleazy sites go up.
I like to think that eventually the sleazy and make-abuck-quick companies will finally go under, and the web will be more like it was before. A communications medium for PEOPLE to communcate, rather than a giant catalog that consumers can shop from.
The only justification I can think this guy has is this...
The value of my certification increases as more Microsoft software is installed. The more FUD I spread about weenysoft, the higher my salary.
I faced a similar debate with my boss once.
Me: We should look into using some open source software
PHB: But EVERYONE has the source code, it must be full of viruses!
At that point I realized what a moron he was, but didn't have the guts to tell him to his face.
I'm an MCSD, but not a Microsoft cheerleader. I won't put all of my eggs in one basket either, so I write code in C++, PERL, VB, you name it. The right tool for the job.
If you could put a roof on your house with this material, it could be used to improve energy efficiency.
Clear - like a giant skylight turning your house into a greenhouse.
White/reflective in the summer to reflect the sunlight off of your house.
Black, to absorb the heat, but keep the interior dark.
You could have a mood car. One that changes color depending on how aggressive driver you are. Your car computer could detect your mood from your driving style.
Red for 'Get Outta my way.', Blue for 'I'm driving the speed limit.' Green for 'I'm on vacation.' Flashing Yellow/Red for 'I'm driving erratically.'
Sounds like they are taking a page from the local Cable Company propaganda. That they can detect you watching channels you aren't paying for from a van parked on the street in front of your house.
Does anyone know if this works? Do they actually do this?
I think the reason for this is that these are the same legislators that need to find room in their budget for subway systems, road widening projects and airport 'Moving Sidewalks.'
If this technology is successful, they could see it being more compact and efficient than automobiles within the city reducing the need for busses and subways/monorails.
Think of the reduced pollution and noise while at the same time improving efficiency and flexibility of urban transportation.
Actually except for some urban centers, pedestrian traffic is rare. Most sidewalks in suburban areas are unused. Leaving them wide open for bicycles. Still not legal, but better to drive a bike on an empty sidewalk, then on the rode where they have to compete with automobiles. On the sidewalk the bicyclist rises to the top of the food chain. On the road, its the automobile.
Can you be specific about what ISPs are doing this?
I am not aware of any ISP that filter SPAM based upon multiple emails from the same source. That seems pretty stupid to me. Are you sure you're not using an open relay that has been black listed?
I used to know this guy who produced a Public Access show that was a video recording of his son playing video games.
Who'd thought he was being innovative? I thought it was just boring.
True Story: A couple of years later he cracked up, got arrested running around a hotel naked. Don't know if the two were related.

Worst Buy

· Score: 1
Best Buy was a subject of a documentary (60 minutes or something like that.) because they kicked someone out of their store for comparison shopping.
He had brought in a laptop and was entering the prices into a spreadsheet. He wanted to compare prices on certain products to other retailers. He sued, won the case then lost the case on appeal. That was a couple of years ago.
I haven't darkened their doors since.
I've kept every computer I have ever bought. Why should I pay a fee for machines that are never disposed of? Of course there was that one Compucolor II that I placed into a dumpster quite a few years ago, although now it is worth more than I paid for it as a collectible! Go figure.
Don't be so sure about that. Take any dollar bill and visit the web site WheresGeorge and see where it has been.

All Decepticons come to the aid of the prowler!

We have a programmer here where I work that everyone makes fun of. His code is unreadable and he is thoroughly incompentant.
Guess what. In the evenings he teaches VB at the local community college. I feel sorry for his students.

We are the Borg. You have been assimilated.

They already did.

I can dream.
Whenever you hear about "investors reacting to" things like "consumer confidence", "GNP numbers", or "unemployment levels", it's all a big crap shoot.
No. Its a neural network.

Remember Mood Rings?
You could have a mood car. One that changes color depending on how aggressive driver you are. Your car computer could detect your mood from your driving style.
Red for 'Get Outta my way.',
Blue for 'I'm driving the speed limit.'
Green for 'I'm on vacation.'
Flashing Yellow/Red for 'I'm driving erratically.'
Whats funny about this, is that preventing someone from "Deep Linking" only encourages them to violate copyright.
Its just a cust and paste, and you have their material without the advertising.
Sounds like they are taking a page from the local Cable Company propaganda. That they can detect you watching channels you aren't paying for from a van parked on the street in front of your house.

You would take it into the building and park it next to your desk. This would REDUCE the need for parking spaces.

Mr Gates has argued during three days of testimony that the states' proposals were cobbled together by its corporate rivals...
I thought Monopolies didn't have rivals.
Mr Gates admitted that Windows XP Embedded, a version of Windows used in products such as bank cash machines...
Does anyone know the brand of cash machine that uses XP embedded? I'd like to be sure to avoid using these.

This seems so unfair.
