I dislike that Neil deGrasse guy, he was quite the smirking "I'm smart and you're not" during that whole Pluto isn't a planet anymore crap. I'm with Michio Kaku as my favorite science enthusiast and speaker. He's smart, he's enthused and he didn't go around on the Tonight Show smirking about how Pluto isn't a planet. I'm also looking to punch whoever it was that decided Brontosaurus wasn't a proper name for the Brontosaurus too. (shakes fist in fury)
The Internet Meme of which you are referring is the meme of the wailing site member whining that this site or that site is going downhill - going to he'll in a handbasket or that the quality of submissions has fallen. - It's user submissions! Submit Brother!
Just don't click on something you don't want to see, don't click on it, don't respond to it, stick your fingers in your ears and go 'La La La' if it helps you. Geez
All these replies of people saying 'but but No! Our ancestors weren't cannibals!' reminds me of a Science/Nat Geo/Discovery Channel show I saw recently about those Cannibal Druids and all the evidence of that happening. Lots and lots of dolts went on camera to mouth a ton of excuses and 'buts' rather than admit that the Druids as Mother Earth loving, New Age darlings were bloodthirsty, life hating, human sacrificing cannibals. I particularly liked when one of the 'professors' said that their cannibalism and human sacrifice was perfectly understandable when you consider that the Roman Army was marching on them and you know how much pressure people are under when those scary Romans are marching. Human sacrifice, cannibalism, savagery, pillaging, raping, - that's who we are folks. It's our heritage, just acknowledge our darker past (and present) and let's try to do better.
You know, developed by the United States Military, run by Americans - you all climbed aboard the train and now you want to be the Engineer/Pilot of the thing cause since now that you got on the train it must be your train. Typical way of thinking there Bureaucrat Trash Monkeys.:P I fart in your general direction.
Journalism seems to be one of the last refuges of the arrogant 'I know more than you do' know nothings since the decline of the British Empire and their 'Nobility' which was also full of the clueless but supremely self assured types. Journalists go to school for 'journalism' and are otherwise clueless about the world they live in or the world they report on. But that does not deter them from their own sense of superiority and desire to tell the rest of the world what to think and how to vote etc etc. To see these clowns up in arms over anyone being able to suggest or critic their mandate from Heaven to tell it like 'they' see it is most amusing especially as we see them bothering to rearrange their deck chairs as the end of their ship against the rocks is about to happen. It's most amusing.
I was one of those who hadn't heard about Demigod and when it came out I pulled down a copy, played it, bought it. Spore? I did want to buy it but ignored it as I ignore any DRM filled crap that's going to crap on my computer and my rights. You publishers can take those games and shove them where the DRM don't shine. If they're games I'd like to play perhaps I'll buy them for the Xbox360 after a year or so when the price is down - after all, you guys taught me how to be patient and not impulse buy something cause it looks good so thank you for that DRM asses.
I'm also loving the ObjectDocks from Stardock - the free version does exactly what it says it's going to do and isn't a memory hog. Wow, who knew they could make products like that anymore? As for the Demigod game, I'm one that doesn't like to play online but this game can give me a nice game I can finish in a half hour like a casual game does. Perfect.
There are whole industries based on helping us laugh and yuk it up at the expense of other human beings. Like the Romans packing the Coliseum to watch people fight to the death or be eaten by wild animals we as a race revel in the misery of others. All of the so called 'reality shows' out there allow you to look in on many aspects of misery and discomfort of other people. Marry a Millionaire, The Bachelor, even your game shows are there not so you can see someone win but so you can see lots of someones lose and lose miserably. Let's get that close up of the woman who debased herself for weeks chasing after 100 thousand dollars and who puts her future in the hands of some good looking bachelor fellow and who just lost, the tears streaming down her perfectly done make up job are priceless. The latest internet sensation is a woman who came onstage and everyone was already laughing at her and her awkward, less than attractive ways. Nobody was there to hope that Susan Boyle could sing, they were there to make fun of her and most of the contestants on those shows are there for us to laugh at and even when it gets to the few good singers those of you who watch are hoping to see someone fail more than you're hoping that everyone does well. We love the misery and we love to wallow in it.
On the internet isn't the main reason for the website 'The Smoking Gun' so we can see people debased and brought low so we can laugh at them? Every week with the cooperation of Police all around the United States they find the mug shots of people at their lowest point and collect the ugliest, the prettiest and the most absurd photos they can find so we can all laugh at them. We're not told that the attractive woman whose picture becomes internet fodder was arrested after fighting with her boyfriend, mother or for not having her Driver's License when stopped for going five miles over the speed limit. No, we get to laugh and guffaw and make jokes like 'bath her and bring her to my tent' for our own amusement. Meanwhile, there she is, forever on the internet because the dignity of human beings isn't our concern and it certainly isn't the concern of the people who get those mugshots and post them for all to laugh at.
Human dignity isn't high no the list of things that Police concern themselves with as witnessed by the weekly mugshot review from The Smoking Gun and posted at Fark. But the Police are only a reflection of the rest of society they come from and the posting of grisly car accident photos is a reflection on us. There should be privacy rules and laws against that since common decency isn't one of the more common attributes of people if it ever was except in our best, most rose colored visions of ourselves.
Sigh - I just read your ridiculous post and I wish you folks would quit lying about Vista being 'better' or even 'as good' as XP. The lock down, the bloat, the DRM. Don't want any of that crap on my computer and I'll just keep building XP machines and you can have your locked down POS VISTA and probably Windows 7 as well. Keep building crap Microsoft and then keep spending all your money on trying to convince people the steaming pile you've created is really a beautiful butterfly. Doesn't seem to be working. SIGH.
Yeah well, legislatures don't know anything about highway construction or job creation or stem cell research but they still seem to be able to 'represent' the people that elected them and vote for things by and large that numbers of people support and would like to see addressed by the legislature. They don't have to be 'IT' people to pass a law. Hasn't stopped them before, that argument won't stop them anytime in the future.
I'm just saying dude, that nobody died and made you Emperor of the Internet so you know, we're all perfectly able to mess around and build our own websites even without your permission. And even without knowing everything there is to know about CSS and HTML. Farkknocker.
So yeah, it is their duty to do things like this. They are reflecting the wishes and desires of their constituents. So it's exactly what they are supposed to be doing.
Yeah, except that the mile is a unit of measure that can be and is defined as a certain thing. The 'definition' of a planet is a made up thing that reflects the personal biases of the clueless geeky bastards whose whole existence is simply trying to be noticed and to try to act like they have any power. The idea and reality of Pluto as a planet escapes these clueless ones and so like any happy sicko pyros they just set the fire and enjoyed watching it burn. - For no good reason.
Well you know, that whole business of a bunch of geek bastards chortling over their tiny bit of power by 'changing' the designation of Pluto does stick in my craw. SOB's were all laughing and happy with their efforts at FUBARing our knowledge of the Universe/Solar System and for no good reason other than to screw with us. Every time I see that San Fran Neils guy with his anti Pluto smirk I just want to punch him in the face. Screw those guys and the idiots who changed the name of the Brontosaurus and all that other crap. At least the Legislators reflect the people and if we don't like them we can unelect them, these smirking Pluto killers seem to have tenure but yeah our legislators can take their funding away from them so there is that.
Gee golly where have I heard that before? I was trying to get a sports radio station up and listen to it but it had this 'Silverlight' thing it wanted me to download in order to listen to the radio station. Humm, Microsoft, no way - fooled before and not again. And here I hear how wonderful Silverlight is, the usual Microsoft offering - lower quality and more locked down BS from that company, what a surprise.
Cory Doctorow has a Crystal Ball into the present - big woop. He's 'predicting' what is happening now. This looks like someone just trying to get clicks to that site which I ignore. Nothing cool or interesting there and there's nothing like some pronouncements into the future that are just rehashing the headlines of today.
I hadn't seen this story, it's an interesting Big Brother Gone Wild story and I'm glad it came back up if it was even up in the first place. And rather than whine about 'old' stories just go on to the next story or find something else to bitch about.
Like a lot of folks here I used to buy lots of PC games but the combined BS of the DRM and the high prices make it easy to stay away. You know, we want to be able to buy these games but like dude found out once again, it's not your game even after you spent your money. The game bastards will decide if you can 'activate' your game and only after you give them your life information so they can sell that and turn you into prey for the marketers. Last game I tried - Civ 4 raped my computer, no more. You all take your DRM and online registration and all of that and shove it up your Valve/Steam asses. I really hate you guys for all you've done to gaming.
That sounds like some rah rah fanboy BS. I can't happily run an iPod in the car, the internet doesn't travel well in the car, my cellphone doesn't have highspeed radio access and if it did I'd still have the same problems I have with the iPod - you can't navigate them in a car traveling down the highway. Sirius/XM is great - convenient access to news, weather, music and sports when I want it. I want Bluegrass music there it is, I want to listen to Jazz, there it is - on my local radio? No chance, it's rap and pop country and Rush Limbaugh railing away like Tokyo Rose. I press one button on my Sirius radio and I have the NFL channel and listen to actual people talking about sports instead of screaming ranting idiots like I'd get on a terrestrial station if I happened to be able to get it at all. My cell phone? I'm lucky when I can check my gmail account on it. The reasons for the financial difficulties of Sirius/XM don't have a thing to do with the intertubes or the whocaresiphone. Get over yourselves fanboys.
Last games I tried on my computer - Civilization which brought with it some sort of DRM that has screwed up my computer since. Sins of a Solar Empire that wouldn't update or register for me, I get through to customer service and they tell me I need to do the Stardock thing, no thanks. Plenty of games I've wanted to buy but DRM and being treated like a criminal - no thanks and screw you guys too.
It's version 1.0 for goodness sakes and it's a merely a tool making music more accessible to more people. I like it, it's a good idea and it's well done. I know it's popular to be cynical and to fill your words with scorn and 'I'm so cool and you all are idiots' thought but you know, it's tiresome. What was I thinking, that's all a lot of you do, sorry, carry on giving meaning to your lives by belittling everything and everyone.
The Prisoner is every bit as geek as Richardo Montalban. I remember watching The Prisoner on PBS in the 70's and watching the discussion shows afterwards where College folks discussed what everything meant in that episode. - It doesn't get more geek than that. I feel pretty sad about these deaths.
If it's sooo irrational - you know, that hatred of Vista, then why are you looking forward to the new version? You know, Vista was broken when it came out, it's still broken now and it's a DRM filled pile of crap and it was a DRM filled pile of crap. That's the bottom line, that's why it's hated. It's DRM filled, it's slow and it's broken and that's why they can't get the new operating system out quick enough. Vista 'love' is tedious and facile and dishonest. But it's not psychological - it's the Microsoft Campaign. 'Don't fix it, tell everything it's great as it is'
I dislike that Neil deGrasse guy, he was quite the smirking "I'm smart and you're not" during that whole Pluto isn't a planet anymore crap. I really hate April Fools Day crap online. It's not funny. If I wanted funny I'd go read the Onion.
