I lived in NC for a couple of years, and I am *sure* I took home less than I would have in the same job in Canada. Between the all the taxes, and the high price of food coupled with the loss of some medical coverage I would have had in Canada makes it not worth my while to live in most parts of the US for purely monetary reasons.

A friend of mine who works for a company that makes video processing and switching equipment has gone on and on about the problems with both DVI-D and HDMI is that there are very few manufactures that comply with them, and thus they are constantly having to update their processors to accommodate each different manufacturer's version of DVI-D and HDMI. It is the number one pain in their butts.

Of the two, HDMI is worse *because* of the DRM...the timing and buffering problems are almost insurmountable with some manufactures. I'm glad I don't have my friend's coding job! It would drive me bonkers!

Software as a service is more of a means of *controlling* software access, not of allowing more freedom. That's why companies like Microsoft have been astroturfing the idea, as it would give them the complete control they want over how the user can access and use their software. And it would be the death of Open Source, as there would need to be government regulations on the mitigation of commerce across international broundries, so a company the size of Microsoft would not have to run app-servers in every different country.

And today, when they start giving homework at k12, one really wonders what it is about...helping the children learn, or attempting to prove to the parents that they are trying to educate the children? There is no scientific proof that homework generically helps grades. Additional work, especially with a teacher, on the other *does* improve grades...I wonder if the North American school system is trying to substitute homework for time with student and class sizes?

It's true, there was a bill on the order paper that was written by, probably, the Big Media Companies, which died when the election was called, I believe. Best to check Michael Geist's site http://www.michaelgeist.ca/ for more information about this topic. It's a great resource!

Don't forget, the current Heritage Minister, Bev Oda, is as much in the pocket of Big Media Companies as Sam Bulte...from Michael Geist:

"Canadian Heritage Minister Bev Oda did not take the pledge. According to data just released by Elections Canada, if she had, she would not hold her current position. During the campaign, Oda received contributions from many in the copyright lobby including Universal Music (tied for her third largest external contributor), the Canadian Motion Pictures Distributors Association, the Entertainment Software Alliance, the Canadian Music Publishers Association, and CRIA's own Graham Henderson. In addition, the broadcast lobby were also active supporters with Melinda Rogers (Ted's daughter), Gary Slaight, Phil Lind, Jay Switzer, and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters."

Big Media is trying to buy our members of Parliament...and that is worse than Patronage ever was.

I don't think that Intel being great is what caused Apple to switch, I think that it is because Apple is going after the mass market. First their own x86 platform so that they can transition their user base, and then a general release for all x86 platforms when their programmers are used to writing x86 code.

Microsoft has written the Pinto of operating systems. In perfect conditions it's a great, step outside that perfect condition, and just one hit from behind makes it explode!

Apple knows this, and knows that eventually people will become fed up with all the problems with Windows, and has poised themselves as a real alternative.

So I either have to buy something like Cedega (which is an excellent product), or reboot into Windows. But virtually all of the above program have cracked copies floading around the net, and the cracked copies work fine under standard WINE. This seems to indicate that the only reason why these program don't run under standard WINE is the copy protection. How many Linux geeks out there would be buying more games if they could easily run them under WINE?

That is not the only reason why to have random searches...

As the Guru of Security, Bruce Schneier, has pointed out, the biggest problem with profiling is that eventually, the bad guys will learn what the profile is you are looking for, and simply change their profile. Truly random searches *do* provide the best security if you are not searching everyone. Without a profile to avoid, bad guys will always have a chance of being singled out, and that will make them nervous...and if you have well trained security people, they will notice that person and single *them* out for extra checking. The threat of a search can be just as effective as the search itself!

I suggest people read Bruce's Blog, and/or subscribe to his security newsletter, Crypto-Gram:
