Does anyone know if when Logic Pro is launched (March) if Apple will be offering discounted crossgrades from other products? I've looked around but can't find anything.
I presently use Cubase VST/32 on the PC, but am about to switch my studio setup to a G5.
I have money burning a hole in my bank account, however the G5's are rumoured to get a speed bump "on or after the 20th Jan" and so obviously I'm waiting a few days.
Also NAMM is on in the US at the moment which basically means its a bad time to buy anything audio related as if manufacturers are going to launch new products, it's now.
I was going to upgrade to CubaseSX2.0 as Steinberg are rather generously providing PC and Mac versions of their software at the moment on the same CD meaning that this is a great time to switch, however there is a long standing graphics bug (5 months and counting) with SX2.0 and Panther which I am not impressed with. Yes I can get around it by running Jaguar 10.2.8 on the G5, however it's going to come with Panther pre-installed.
If Apple do offer a nicely priced crossgrade, I will be giving serious thought to switching to Logic Pro.
I was at one of our main sites, trying to figure out why a new fibre switch I'd just fitted which was planned to replace an older copper model wasn't working correctly - the thing would constantly reboot when VLAN's were presented to it's trunk to a remote switch in the same building. The existing switch carries voice and data between two large sites.
After trying literally everything including using a serial terminal into the old switch to compare QoS and VLAN settings, I decided to reset the thing to factory defaults.
Called up the menu in the terminal, reset to factory default, confirm.
Almost immediately I got a call on my mobile telling me that "the phones had stopped working" for the site. "That's odd" I thought, and proceeded to troubleshoot the problem. I traced it to the old switch I was trying to replace, and was surprised to see a serial cable connected into it. The other end of course was connected into my laptop, which was displaying a confirmation of a reset to factory defaults...
Why do you idiots keep saying "You can get Darwin."?
Well firstly, I'm not an idiot.
Secondly, the poster asked for "some sort of lite x86 version" and I would argue that Darwin is "some sort" of OS X.
And as for your "analogy", firstly it's crap. Secondly it would be more appropriate to say "I want to check out a linux box with X Windows" and for the answer to be something along the lines of "you can check out the linux kernel at www.kernel.org".
So, how much did this vial of air cost?
$35 on eBay.
...actually it's the link - appending &ei=5062 onto the end of a NYT URL would appear to bypass registration..
Moo har har.
Is it me, or is this the first NYT article that we have not had to register for?
Perhaps they realised that on certain days their database gets populated with about 50,000 Mr F*ck You's with an email address of abuse@nytimes.com.
Well I don't know about anyone else but I would just like to say all hail to our new mouse masters.
...in games, snipers are given a ludicrous advantage over everyone else.
I think you will find that in real life, snipers also have an advantage over everyone else.
Anyone else play the other greats of that era - things like Ravenskull, Striker's Run, Exile etc...? Did anyone ever finish Exile?
Don't forget Elite, Arcadians and Starship Command.
Exile still is my favorite game - it works under BeebEm!
I never finished the Acorn Electron version (couldn't afford a Model B or Master) but got it for the Amiga years later and finished it.
I recently found it again as an emulated game (using BeebEm) and started playing again - even now it's very playable.
Women have 50 pairs of shoes/handbags etc. because those are not meant to be used more than once!
Ahh you mean like RSA SecureID passwords?
Bring It!: equipped with PCI slots that can accept up to FULL SIZE cards, the NEKO 64(TM) can accommodate your favorite Creamware
Blimey - there is an apt term!
the amount of retail space devoted to women's products is SEVEN times that devoted to men's.
Yes but men tend to buy things they need only once, as opposed to women's 50 pairs of shoes / handbags etc.

Speaking as an artist who was formerly on MP3.com I suppose it's kind of amusing that I could end up as elevator music.
At least I have always given some material away for free but I cant help wondering what elevators I am going to be heard in.
Very!
*thinks* hmm.. too good to be true.. what's the catch?
Since when? Is this new in 3.5?
Does this mean in a week I can go to Microsoft's website, download a .exe file, run it, and be able to mount NFS partitions off my linux file server?
So long as you are talking about Windows Server then yes.
Too bad I just had to have the iBook G4 the second it was released!
Dude, it's only $49. If you can afford to run out and buy an iBook G4 the second it's released then you can afford $49.
It's not like the old software has stopped working - it will continue to work just fine. If you want the updated software then you buy it.
the magnet clasps fell out 3 days after I put it on
Magnets! *hissssss* My arch nemeses!
Hisssss!
...suddenly takes on a WHOLE different meaning...
The hose was used to equalize pressure and eliminate fog between two panes of a window.
So.. someone left a window open?
It goes against everything the industry has been fighting against.
I suppose it also generates registration numbers and hacks into MMORPG accounts too does it?
Most games are heading towards an online model where the ability to copy the game media is often encouraged.
Hey I have a minidisc player in my car!
Don't dis the disc!
Text.. slashdotted.. help..
...so if I tatoo this mark on my face, does this stop my picture being printed and /or circulated digitally?
