Not being a programmer, I am wondering if this will require the rewritting of OSX and/or applications. The Mac World just went through an enormous transition to OSX. I don't know if software vendors would be so psyched to rewrite their apps. again.
Just prior to coming over to/., I was playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Upon reading this article I thought back to my first true gaming love Castle Wolfentstein on th Apple II.
>> The latest non-scientific mindset of the Greens seem to be prohibitive of diesels because they believe they cause CANCER, and that they believe the emissions from gasolene DON'T cause cancer (or they choose to ignore them). They are being played by the oil companies, who know that the quantity of diesel that can be distilled from crude oil is limited.
This is an absurd statement. I no of no environmentalist who isn't extremely aware of the problems with gasoline emissions. It is fundamentally what we are up in arms against.
I can't wait to buy a hydrogen fuel cell car. Unfortunately, that car is still in the future.
What I can do know is buy a hybrid car that is as emissons free as is currently possible. There are only two cars in the world that produce less pollution and perform just like any other car, the Prius and the Insight. If you compare them with the Civic Hybrid, I think you'd choose the Civic because it handles the road better and is more comfortable.
By the way, I think you'd find that most scientists are environmentalists.
The only difference between the Civic Hybrid and the regular Civic is the engine. The Civic got the highest test crash ratings you can get, so its a relatively safe vehicle.
If you want to drive a monster truck puting everyone else at risk, all while killing the earth with its emmissions.......
well its a free country....... you're free to be the biggest Ass**le you can be..... and be proud of it.
By the way, the batteries and electric engine have an 8 year/80,000 mile warranty.
I've had a Honda Civic Hybrid for about two months, 4,000 miles. I couldn't be more impressed.
It has enough pickup for the driving most people do. Its more comfortable than my Subaru Forrester, including more leg room. It handles well. Best of all, I average 50.8 miles to the gallon. Yes, there is a MPG gauge. It has a range of over 600 miles per tank of gas and is a Ultra Low Emmissions vehicle.
It charges its own batteries through regenerative breaking and cruising without depressing the gas pedel, e.g. going down hill. The electric engine kicks in for some extra horsepower when you drive uphill or are accelerating. The gas engine is only about 96 horsepower, but that is enought when you are driving a light car on level roads . I drive it through the Green Mountains and it performs very well. It can cruise at 70 mph or more on a highway very easily, though I find I downshift a little more in the Civic than my Forrester for some extra oumph.
I've added a Sirius Satellite radio, so now I can drive coast to coast on five tanks of gas while listening to the same radio station!!!!
Put your environmental money where your environmental mouth is and buy one! I believe congress has just pased a tax credit for people who buy a hybrid.
Go forth and be GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does this remind anyone else of the electroplated armor on the Enterprise of the current series?
I'll bet that in one hundred years that we will have an aircraft or spaceship with technology similar to the Enterprise, however rudimentary. Shields and Phasers are forseable in the not to distant future if you look at the progress that has been made in these areas to date. The "Star Wars" people are testing energy weapons to destory nuclear missles right now. Now we are talking about early energy shileds. We have had sensors, pervasive comptuers and communicators for years.
However, I doubt warp drives or transporters are just around the corner:-)
Have you seen a recent pinball machine??? They are terrible. The middle of the table is barren. No bumpers... no drop down targets... I think these were the high maintenance items, so to save money the manufacturers got rid of them. For me, however, bumpers and drop down targets are the best part of pinball. Anyone have an "Eight Ball Deluxe" or "dark Knight" in mint condition???
On Macs IE has two major problems. 1) It crashes randomly. No other program in OS X crashes like this, for me anyway. 2) IE will frequently download a page, but not display most of it. In order to see the page you've download one must click on the page and press command all. The page will the appear. I have switched to Mozilla for this reason.
I saw the project manager on T.V, about an hour ago. He said there is an organization that sets the parameters for global circumnavigation records and that Fossett was well within the parameters. Fossett traveled 19,000 miles. The globe at the equator is 24,000 miles
I heard that the two Sirius NPR stations will NOT broadcast "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition" so as not to step on the NPR local stations. This allows the locals to have important content not available elsewhere. They can then still hit us all up during pledge drives. I don't believe that the Sirius NPR stations will do pledge drives.
I personally think that all aspects of digital film in the Star Wars I & II cheapend the Star Wars Saga. Instead of great story telling Lucas has gone over to the dark side relying on cheap tricks. Digital film technology is not as good as real honest to goodness film. It doesn't have the warmth or realism of film.
I'm a photographer and use a Nikon D1x digital camera (one of the best) for snapshots and other photos that are not very important to me. I would never use a digicam for my artwork.
Yoda just plain old sucked as a CG character. There just was not the emotional depth or magic that we see in him as a puppet.
It really saddens me to see to see what has become of the Star Wars Saga that was so very important to me as a child.
I'm glad I have the original un"enhanced" versions of the original triology on video tape.
I have to admit that I've had some bad Apple experiences in the past year or so. Between myself and two friends, three of the four macs we've bought have had major problems. Two replaced motherboards and one replaced LCD display.I'm sad to have to say it, 'cause I'm a big Apple fan.
I still think Apple makes great computers though, and wouldn't switch to Windoze. --- Note obligatory, derogatory use of intentional mispelling of Windows!!!!!;-)
I also think Handspring makes a sturdier handheld than Palm.
If all of the/.ers who are upset about this war the media is waging against our freedoms aren't contacting their senators and congressman about this, then you are conceeding victory. Tell your representatives that you don't want to see them accepting money from the media. Tell them that a vote for the media is A VOTE AGAINST THE PEOPLE. Contact them once a week. We must start to wage total war! Get your friends and family involved. Our rallying cry should be "Fuck Mickey!!!!!"
People with Replay 4000s should destroy this as a method of collecting data. Please spend ten minutes a day just hiting the commercial skip button on your remote over and over. If enough people do this for a few weeks it should be enough to distort the collected data and make it useless for any real world analysis of consumer behavior. Could you imagine a court or media company looking at the data. They'd say something like, "What the hell are these people smoking??? All they do is press the button over and over and over!!" Maybe we could add a few billion erronious clicks.
As I understand it, the eMacs have a very low profit margin for Apple. They don't wan't to canibalize their sales of the new LCD iMacs which have a higher profit margin.
Apple has always seen the education market as a way to grow their marketshare. They hope that once kids learn to use Macs in school they will remain Mac users through their lives. So Apple, is willing to make lower profits in the Edu. market, hoping kids will later buy higher price macs for the home.
I have two Replays (the black one, a generation older than the 4000.)
Replays do let you do manual recordings, like an advanced VCR, so that you don't have to download the program guide from the Replay mothership. Unfortunately, you can't title the recording, so every recording shows up as "Manual Recording" in your programing guide. I think I record about 35 different shows on my 60 hour Replay box. It would definitely be a nightmare if they were all called "Manual Recording".
Maybe they fixed this in the 4000, but I know for sure it does do manual recordings.
Yup, My friend did just that.

I hate to borrow a catchphrase from the gun nuts, but.....
I have ripped over 2000 songs to use with my iPod. I own the CDs for every last one of those songs. the iPod has DEFINITELY caused me to buy a lot more CDs than I otherwise would have bought.
