From my perspective (and some things I have read), I think Microsoft's problem is that they went from an engineering company that catered to software developers (great tools that made it easy to make software on Windows) to a marketing driven company that caters to CTO's (lots of flash and dog and pony show material). You cannot be successful without have a working product no matter how many big wigs you wow. Making it easy for people outside the company to write software for a OS is like getting developers for free (like Linux is doing now).

When there are ice storms in South Texas (a very rare event), me and a couple of buddies like to get some lawn chairs and a cooler and go sit at the end of an off-ramp of a freeway and watch people freakout while going >5mph and skidding uncontrollably. Everyone knows they are not suppose to be out, but there they are wrecking their cars anyway. To bad there is nothing like that for the SCO board room.

I really believe this has very little to do with fee's and DRM and everything to do with control. The music companies see that internet radio is killing off there payola cash cow FM and people are buying indie music or whatever. I see this as a stalling tactic till they can figure out how to make it work in the payola scheme or kill it all together to force people back to crappy FM and one hit wonders.
