I enjoyed the game, but I do not think I would buy any of their software again. Steam was constantly updating stuff, downloading things I did not want, popping up messages on all this activity. They should have made it opt in for all of that and not hog so many resources. I unloaded it and still wonder if it hosed something up enough I need to re-install.

  6. Computer use should be minimized on Students Do Better Without Computers · · Score: 2, Interesting

I love computers, went back to school to get a Masters of Software Engineering, program computers for a living, program them in my spare time for my hobbies. However, in this case they are not a useful tool.

My Mom is a 2nd Grade Teacher and regardless of what is suppose to be happening, this is what is actually happening. The State is spending large amounts of money on these crap software programs (and I am not sure stellar programs would be better) and more or less, they are being used to baby sit the kids.

No wonder scores would be lower where there is heavy computer usage. I have severe learning disabilities and I would not have done well at all without the one on one interaction with high quality Teachers and Tutors.

In my opinion, all the money that is spent on these software packages and books should be paid to get the best Teachers and not the education book corps.

I finished my taxes already and acutally have already recieved my refund, but for those just getting into it now, beware.

This year TurboTax requires that you buy the premier version if you have anything like options of employee stock purchase plans. Last year, I had basic and I was covered. This is a difference of approx $40. (and they let give you a space to enter the amount you paid for tax prep software, but it did not change my refund amount any) Also make sure you save your reciept if you are going to do e-filing and would like to have any hope of the rebate they offer.

I hope competent alternatives are highlighed here, I would switch in an instance.

  11. Re:bottom line TCO on TiVo vs Microsoft vs HDTV Cable · · Score: 1

You need to add in what you are getting with each.

It is not really $500 with MythTV if you just want standard tv. You can use a 500MHz machine and a single tuner for a one time cost of a couple of hundred dollars. If you get into HDTV then you will need the bigger box so more cost. If you want to record more than one show at a time then you will need more tuners, something most other solutions do not even have.

So the guy with three tivos has less features / capabilities than the guy with one MythTV Server with three diskless frontends. (and the Myth Guy can record multiple shows simultaneously and watch them all on every frontend) But the two solutions approach the same price.

I have severe dyslexia and completely agree with the parent poster

I would add that it is very important to have someone who can diagnose and understands the learning problem(s). My Mom even became a school teacher because dyslexia runs in the family. I had all kinds of problems because I have dyslexia, but have always been able to figure things out. I started reading when I was three and one of the most traumatic times of my childhood was being accused of cheating repeatedly in the 4th grade because I could finish my reading assignments so quickly (and went through all of them to the highest reading level), but could not read out loud to save my life.

Besides my Mom of course, the single biggest help of all the programs, books, gizmos, and crap that the school system tried were two Tutors (one inside and one outside the school system). The one outside the school system actually understood dyslexia and within weeks I understood better how I learned, made better grades, and felt like less of a mutant. It was still hard work though, so no silver bullet.

And for anyone out there, take it with a grain of salt if they label you dyslexic. At the time I was growing up, they used to label everyone dyslexic from hyper kids to social misfits because it was a popular learning disability. Keep in mind that Einstein was dyslexic.

I went through all of the gimmicks and will vouch that a knowledgeable Tutor was the single greatest help. Look for them, they are well worth the effort.
