I realize that alot of Programmers like Java because it has alot of features, but as a user, I have yet to come across a Java website I did not hate. The minute it starts trying to force a loading of a runtime environment or jar files and screws up the back button or other standard controls I want to leave.
Not trying to hate on Java, but please give an example of a Java coded website that has a pleasant user experience or list the object oriented web programming languague you really intended.
The biggest thing I think there is to learn here is that if the group that is working on something is extremely passionate about their cause then it does not matter how much money a competing group throws at the same solution. A while back I saw some show on PBS about when Microsoft was building Windows. At that time had a group of very motivated Engineers building Windows all hyped up on free soda. They did well. Now there is Linux, same deal. So now when I am trying to decide which software package or solution to choose I always look for the zealots. Alot of Open Source Projects definitely has the edge on this.
I think this is really the way to go. One of the stations that I listened to has a morning show that constantly complained about people writing in about stuff they would say or do. I began to wonder why they spent so much time making a big deal about it and intentionally did things to piss people off. Well, they want people to complain, because these folks would rather listen than go somewhere else.
podcasting is great, because you can just turn these idiots off and listen to what you want. Any method like this would promote a change. Don't like it, don't complain they want that, just go somewhere else.
I never signed up for the DO NOT CALL list because I thought it would be a political football and I could not be certain of the out come. (like if they change the law and now all these telemarketing firms would then use the DO NOT CALL list) To that end, I set up an asterisk box.
And if there is no caller id, straight to voicemail without ever ringing the phone. Call me with some telemarketing BS with a caller id (or any other BS for that matter), well then you get the blacklist and it plays an obnoxious recording with no person having to answer the phone or listen to a telemarketing voicemail. Pretty sweet.
Funny how that works for politics as well (separation of church and state) The less direct intervention by the Government for either broadband service or religioun the better.
I remember an article about advertising and this one line stuck with me about how they feel about people. Mind you a high up Advertising Exec said this:
"Advertising is like spraying roaches. The more you spray them the tougher it is to affect them."
I think you missed the point. Google has structured a corp culture that funds the Engineers and has a passionate advocate (the Engineer) for the idea they developed. If it becomes big enough, then I assume the Managers step in. IMHO, I would prefer this.
I would much prefer a personal project system to what I have now. At my present employer, Managers troll Engineers for ideas and then make a power point for the higher ups on the great innovation they have developed. The Yahoo "idea factory" smells of that, where the Managers pick and choose what they want. The problem with that is that the Manager usually does not understand the idea well and the guy who invented it, for a lack of a better expression, is "left out". The brilliance of the Google method is you get a passionate Employee working on a new idea.
The contract I signed lets my employer own my ideas for a year or two anyways after I leave so I would prefer to work some place I like and passionately manage my own innovation.
Dude, you don't even need the Indian guy. You can set up an Asterisk Box (or hire me to) and buy a VOIP with the Indian phone number. You could even buy multiple numbers in different regions like one in Bangalore, one in Delhi, etc. Beauty of this is it cost you almost nothing, requires noone over seas, and it appears that you are a local Indian Business.
Don't know about other folks, but I dislike console gaming because of the gamepad. It is awkward and lacks the power of a keyboard and mouse for the games I like to play including FPS.
Other problems as well like vendor lock in, but that is my biggest gripe.
If you are going after him, I hope you include DeLay and Perry too for their various corp transgressions. I could careless if they are Republican or Democrats, if they behave like this they need to go. They are suppose to hold themselves to a higher standard.
I completely agree. Blockbuster screwed me out of $20 for "them" loosing the movie I put in the return box about 5 years ago. Now if they had not been down right rude when I went to clear it up, I might have let that and the huge late fee costs slide. But paying for service and being treated like crap was enough for me to never go back (for me when I pay for high priced service it means you are never wrong, within reason, even when you are). If they were the only movie store in town and you could not get a movie any other way I would book trips to china. I feel that strongly.
Netflix on the other hand has "always" been on the mark. Love their service and it makes a trip to the mail box a bit better than an hand full of bills and junk mail.
Don't know if he figured that into his analysis and the fact that people talk and the internet is pervasive.

Let the Gentoo vs. everything else flamewar begin!
Just what I was going to say. May not yet be a Pivotal, but won't be long.

Well, at a minimium naming your pen name after a keyboard is dumb.

It would have been even better if they titled the story "Dupe 2".
Sweet, I am getting a new TV from the Gov then. For my $50 I would like a 50 inch LCD with HDTV. Let me know where to pick up.

Was wondering if anyone else was thinking about the USSR comparison. I would total agree that things are headed that way.
Companies should exist for the people. When people exist for companies (the state) then you have the USSR.

Now just practice your bad English.

Completely agree, the lawyers should recieve a reasonable compensation. Wish I had mod points.

subordinate to the interior designers.
That would entail the nerds actually talking to a girl. Sheeze, you are new around here arn't you.
You and your "terrorists" are obviously in the U.S. So the answer is no. Please report to the Dept. of Homeland Security for re-education.

News flash, Motorola only has a handful of factories LEFT in the USA, they are all closing, and are investing heavily in China.

Hope Netflix is around for a long time to come.
Looks like the new longhorn theme is to build a glass house. Guess they intend a "do no evil" policy for the future.
