I used to configure truecrypt to unmount partitions when I put on the screensaver (or the "lock computer" feature) before suspending the laptop. More often than not, it just suspended the applications. Upon resume I remounted the disks and the applications resumed smoothly.
Seconded. Doing MySQL/PHP websites is indeed easy, but doing them secure is where the real challenge is. Without any knowledge of common flaws, your current architecture is probably already unpatchable and would require a rewrite to secure. I may be overly pessimistic but there are so many ways to botch it when you don't know much that it would a miracle that you don't rely on a flawed feature.
Well to each his choice. I am not that of an escapist either, but I can understand the choise : if it looks easier to improve one's virtual condition instead of one's real condition and if it brings the same amount of retribution, why is that an invalid choice ?
Sure, you are still a pawn during 8 hours a day at your day work. You are a king during 8 hours of free time plus weekend. You have real people (other players) who respect you and your skills. What is to criticize in that lifestyle ? The denial ? The denial of what, exactly ?
Living for a game is not dumber than living for any given hobby or sport. Ultimately it all boils down about your expectations in life.
Personally IRL is still my prefered MMORPG, but that is because I'm a graphics freak. I don't see what really makes real life obviously preferrable to a virtual world once your basic survival is guaranteed.
To explain what it means... Cyno fields are special (and expensive) devices that create a wormhole in any place of the EVE universe. This is usually used to allow an attack force to bypass a heavily guarded point. If you want to create a decently secure place, you have to buy cyno-jammers in order to prevent this sapper work to be possible. BoB claimed a large part of territory and had several cyno-jammers in their presumably strategical positions. Cyno jammers offline means that a single ship avoiding detection could possibly open an access to an arbitrary large army anywhere inside their territory.
It might sound stupid to say that about a video game, but really, it is about choosing one's meaning of life. I know some immigrants here who work in shitty job but who will enjoy their retirement in their home village as wealthy people. Apocalypse Now was about a man who chose to become a god among primitives instead of a soldier among soldiers. Some people prefer to be mercenary bosses, pirates kings or wide corporations CEO in a virtual world instead of a pawn in real life. I can't really blame them.
Should everyone have this opportunity ? Hell yes ! But there is no blame to put on people who have a high lifestyle. They can feel guilty if they wish, they can help if they wish, but they set a goal. Having a goal is a good way to start making progress.
For instance, MonoDevelop is nowhere near Visual Studio.Net
I think most of the added value comes from Microsoft's IDE. The promises to do the same under linux are simply not true. The amount of portage already made is impressive but nowhere near 100%
Martian robots are just PR stunts. The real exploration is made by spectrometers and complex experiences from orbiters. What ? the rover has seen some water ? Woohoo ! The orbiter has a map of the ice-water layer and an estimation of its quantity. Call me obtuse, but what is the scientific interest in having a mountain-climbing robot apart from the funky pictures that NASA will flood the net with ? Personally I would be more interested in a tunnel-digging robot (the start for the future colony !) but well... I wonder if the NASA Mars program is still scientific or just entertainment.
I don't think "Don't get so uppity" makes sense - if other countries have it worse, that's just even more depressing, and also adds to fears of where a slippery slope could lead to.
I agree, I should stop supposing that everyone here has a sense of humour.
He founded Microsoft, he gave it its impulse and its direction. He introduced chaos in the IT world, I think that he cost us about 20 years of progress. People here like IT. They despise this man.
On the other hand, I would have a hard time figuring a better way to spend his money than what he currently does.
I also completely agree that he used flaws in the system that should not have existed at first. But tell me, when a hacker uses a flaw in your windows XP system, do you sue Microsoft or the hacker ?
It is not a matter of blind faith about science and technology, it is a rational question : "What changes would bring real AI to our world ?". If you think a bit about it, it is very hard to imagine a world where a lot of change would not have happened. Nothing beats hard work ? True, but with an AI, this hard work can be made automatically without human intervention. And that, it solves a lot of problems.
Politicians should start reading science fiction. It is a very serious concern for the society as a whole that SF is considered an inferior sort of literature. When politicians will start getting interested in the concerns that can arise from future science, they will start making laws *before* actual problems arise.
The Holy Roman Empire is sometimes also called the Holy Germanic Roman Empire. A Germanic cultural and national identity existed long before Germany itself.
Religion-wise, Christians and Muslims share the same Judaic roots. If a different origin is a good reason to never reconcile, I cannot understand how we can be at peace with, say, Japan. More often than not, warring factions are from the same origin. It is not the culture that causes conflicts, it is the common border they have.

And they work all night around. A blame I hold against most mass transit systems.
This is slashdotted, maybe we could have the link in google maps directly ?

Some people would like not to pay the windows tax.
Because there are other white hat units. Having a unit made in order to carry out black hat operations is News For Nerds, Stuff That Matters.
Just start another war. You'll see how easily $800 billions can be spent...

Don't get so uppity, in France the proposal included to take DNA samples even of all witnesses involved in a case.
I think the good question is : what kind of contact, relation and common interest do they still have with their former clients ?
If Steve Jobs dies from malaria, we may indeed have a case.

It's a robbery. Crime. I am not entertained.
This is my exact reaction in front of every publicity stunt.
Windows 7 Premium : Come to the future of multi-tasking OSes !

Plus, Kurzweil is a crackpot. Not a researcher. And yes, I am a singularist. He is as embarrassing as Michael Moore is for a democrat.
Plus you may have ethical beliefs that if one is not ready to pay for software, one should use OSS solutions instead of illegal ones.
